Lau had a reputation on the streets of London. By day, he was branch manager of a trading company. By night and in shadow, he was known for a completely different and more sinister line of work that involved smoke-filled chambers, hazy minds, and pretty girls to assist clients.

Even with all his shady dealings, by some miracle, he was able to have his heart captured. His heart was hers from that first moment alone with the maid. With her, he didn’t have to be ruthless, cold, oblivious.

Happiness had clouded his judgment. He proposed an outing with Mei-Rin one afternoon. He was to take her to one of his more reputable teahouses and then take a carriage ride to a theater show, one that she had always expressed an interest in.

His underworld dealings were foolishly put at the back of his mind when he was with her.

Cold eyes followed him silently. People wanted him dead. A plan was to be put in motion to take down the drug lord, the branch manager.

Lau had just settled them both into his carriage after they had enjoyed the teahouse. Dusk was falling rapidly as they rode across town to the theater. As they passed a darkened residential street, the carriage came to a sudden stop. He put an arm protectively across Mei-Rin to keep her from falling off the seat.

Sounds of men yelling outside. The carriage driver’s screams of terror. The carriage door wrenched open, a man with a gun aimed at them.

He drew out his sword. The man fired and Lau deflected bullets with his blade before taking a great slice of the man’s throat. He cautiously looked outside to see a deserted street except for the dead driver and the man he had just killed.

“Dear, are you alrigh--” He froze.She lay motionless on the bench, a pool of red soaking her hair, eyes unseeing. A stray bullet had taken her just like that. Lau fell to his knees in front of her, heart ripping apart.

“No. No. NO! NO! Mei-Rin!” Sobs wracked his body as he held her one last time, limp in his arms, already growing cold in the chilly night air. He bowed his head over hers, tears mingling with the red fluid. He never noticed the second gunman.

The reaper that found their bodies that night noted the joy that they shared together in their cinematic records.

Lau heard the clank of the alley entrance door as it was opened and the heavy thud as it shut soon after. He exhaled a puff of smoke and lifted his eyelids to peer towards the entrance, but the haze of smoke that filled the room prevented him from seeing the newcomer. His eyes swept around the room at the outlines of clients reclining on sofas. His hand reached out to his side to touch Ran-Mao and alert her of a new visitor, but found her absent. His brow furrowed for a moment before he remembered that she was off to ‘collect’ payment that was long overdue. His eyes slid shut once more and he stretched languidly as the sound of footsteps became more prominent. They stopped in front of the throne-like sofa that he was sitting on. He put an unassuming smile on his face for his visitor, though his eyes remained closed.

“Welcome. Is there something that you wish to find here?”
