Kirishima’s pretty bad at dates. In fact, with his whole history of knowing you, he has never had the pleasure of taking you out on a date. All of his friends are surprised that you’ve tolerated this, continuing to date him (“Are you sure about him?” Kaminari had asked you once. “If he’s skimping out on the dates, just call us and we’ll beat him up for you”).
The truth is, the two of you have never had much time for going on dates with your busy lives as Pro Heroes. Halfway through your Netflix movie binges, one of you get a call from your agency, telling you that there’s another villain out there, and you’re honestly not too fond of those calls interrupting your movie sessions, which is why you two have a silent agreement to avoid dates.
This time around, you’re happy that you two have gotten a vacation from your agency. It’s a whole entire week — not much to some — but to you, it means that you can spend time in peace with him, focusing all your attention on each other. Of course, you enjoy being a Pro Hero, but you also do want your time with your boyfriend.
When you look over at Kirishima on your very first date together at the beach, you notice that he’s palming through his khaki shorts awkwardly, sand sifting into his Crocs. You give him a look, the kind of look that says, for fuck’s sake, what the hell are you doing? because people are starting to turn their attention toward the young man who looks like he’s doing some kind of weird TikTok dance.
“This can’t be happening,” Kirishima mutters under his breath, his eyes creased with worry.
“You good?” you ask him in concern, raising your eyebrows. “We can always go back to the hotel if you don’t feel well.”
“I’m good,” he says absentmindedly, trying to pry your attention away from him. “I’m just —”
He cuts himself off, and you’re left confused as you gaze at him, your steps deliberately slower as you try to gauge him. Suddenly, your bare feet land onto something hard. You lower yourself to the sandy banks of the beach, letting your fingers hook onto a ring. It’s gold in color, a little dusty from the sand piled upon it. Eyes widening with understanding, you understand your boyfriend’s panic. You pocket the ring quickly, allowing a smirk to play upon your lips.
“Kirishima,” you sing, drawing his name out in a coy lilt.
“Yes, honey?” he mumbles, his words coming out in a worried slur.
“Will you marry me?” you ask him, letting the ring hang off your index finger.
He stares at it, his pupils dilating. “Oh, fuck.”
“Unless… you don’t want to?” you consider playfully, watching him shake his head frantically in dismay.
“No, I want to,” he declares, clutching your face in his hands.
His lips taste so salty with his tears and seawater, but somehow, you like kissing him that way.
(“It was supposed to be a surprise,” he later bemoans to you, but you smile, only continuing to tease him.
“It’s only you who would ever lose a ring during our first date,” you hum, poking his cheek as he slides down the bedroom wall in shame.)
