Concept Statement
Is Sexual Desire a product of our biological need or rather our sensual, lustful wanting? It is an intrinsic of human nature to both need and want in order to survive, however which is the productive force that results in desire? Is need the recognition of lack and thus the creation of Desire. Is want the catalyst for Desire as a form of motivation? In the poem ‘Desire’ the poet speaks of Desire as “… a craving for something sweet/ a want/ a need” (CrossofIron). This led me to experimenting with the juxtaposed ideas of want and need through ‘something sweet’ a strawberry.
The realization of lack can cause obsession and thus create a need within a person to fulfill their sexual Desire. Need is created out of dissatisfaction and in turn perpetuates dissatisfaction. Need encourages unquenchable greed. Lana Del Rey expresses these notions in her song ‘Burning Desire’ where she attempts to express her desperate need for ‘baby’. She sings of her burning desire as a result of her lack and therefor need. You come to understand the frantic craving she feels through her tone of voice and heavy breathing towards the end of the song. I furthered this idea by experimenting with the notion of the strawberry and how as human’s we have an inevitable biological need to consume a strawberry. I researched the nutritional benefits of the strawberry and created my own nutritional facts table which attempted to highlight the reasoning behind the biological need for the strawberry which ultimately results in a Desire for the strawberry. I experimented with the strawberry itself by photographing it in ways that demonstrated the natural nutritious strawberry. I then went on to edit the photos and made them black and white, this was to expresses the facts behind the nutritional value of the strawberry and how it could relate to the need aspect of desire. For my final work I collaged repetitions of the nutritional facts table I created with the black and white photographs of the strawberries. I experimented with collage and repetition because I wanted to explore the recognition of lack as a catalyst for the domino effect of never ending sexual desire.
In contrast want can be a catalyst for Desire. Although Desire can be a result of lack formed from need, Gilez Deleuze “conceives desire as a constructive force.” This notion ties in closely with the idea that want can cause motivation, which evokes drive and passion within people. I became to further understand these ideas through the research of the Lindt Lindor Truffles Television commercial ‘Do you Dream in Chocolate?’ This commercial creates a motivation within people to go out and buy the chocolate through accessing their want and Desire. The artwork that I found on Tumblr by Sandman furthered my understanding of the want aspect of desire and its never ending nature. The tag used to find the artwork on Tumblr was #neverending which explains the continuous motivational aspect of sexual Desire. I attempted to further understand this idea through once again experimenting with the strawberry and how as human’s we have a lustful want for the delicious taste of the strawberry. I experimented through photography of the strawberry where I attempted to capture the sensual devour inducing nature of the strawberry itself and what makes us want the strawberry so badly. I also experimented with creating a strawberry representation of the female vagina to tie in to the sexual desire aspect of my project. I later collaged repetitions of two of the pictures I found most successful at portraying the deliciousness of the strawberry. The reason behind the repetition was to further exemplify the constructive force of want causing desire and the never ending spiral effect of unsatisfied sexual desire.
Ultimately, through my research and experimentation with the strawberry I have come to understand the two contrasting catalysts of sexual desire; Need and Want.

Iteration 2: Want as a Catalyst of Desire
For this iteration I was experimenting with the strawberry and how as human’s we have a lustful want for the delicious taste of the strawberry.
Iteration 1: Need as a Catalyst of Desire
For this iteration I was experimenting with the notion of the strawberry and how as human’s we have an inevitable biological need to consume a strawberry. I researched the nutritional benefits of the strawberry and created my own nutritional facts table which attempted to highlight the reasoning behind the biological need for the strawberry which ultimately results in a Desire for the strawberry. This is the nutritional values table I created from the information I received from the internet on the nutritional benefits of strawberries. It explores the biological need angel of desire.

Lana Del Rey - Burning Desire
This work is a song made by Lana Del Rey a poet and singer/song writer which explores romantic and sexual desire a woman can have for a man. the work is presented through a song medium which I find is very effective considering the multiple elements involved for example poetic lyrics, symbolic music video, tone and sound. This work is related to my idea for my COFA body of work because I'm aiming to focus of sexual and romantic desire as represented by fruit.
Week 5: desire
A few things to think about regarding your posters:
* You don’t need to answer the question with your poster, or show all of your research and ideas.
* This is a first creative step. A chance to reiterate the question in your own terms. A first creative visualisation of what you find interesting...

Desire
Its always there, in the back of my mind. Not like anyone cares Not like I care much for it either But its always there A desire, like a craving for something sweet A want A need It pulls me in sometimes It wont leave until its satisfied It never is I wont allow it It makes me think It keeps me sane and aware It breaks me down and eats me inside Id be confined I would be left in isolation, away from those who believe in the illusion of safety I wouldn't stop at just one I couldn't have a limit once I begin Why stop when I have already started?

Iron, Cross of. Desire. 2014. <http://hellopoetry.com/CrossofIron/>.
This poem explores the essence of desire and talks of how it is present in the back of the mind. The kind of desire the poet is describing is not clarified however the poem still describes the snowballing effect that all types of desires can have; Once you give in to desire it is hard to resist in the future "I wouldn't stop at just one". I found this poem inspiring for my poster because it helped me to further understand the true nature of desire.

I chose this Lindt Lindor truffles add because it interested me how it managed to so effortlessly evoke desire within its viewers and in turn cause them to go out and buy their product. Advertising is a catalyst for desire and adds like these demonstrate how active and productive desire can be; how desire can cause us to stop what we are doing jump of the lounge and run to the shops to buy Lindt Lindor Truffles all because we crave to subdue our feelings of desire.
