“No but wouldn’t it be sad if they did? Who would want to stay in a place where they were tortured and used for some sick entertainment… Perhaps her being here makes sense, her own purgatory of sorts but even then - there would be better places for all the spirits who’ve passed through here.” Admitting with a shrug, Melanie would get one of the ghosts to come out. It was just a matter of time. They couldn’t hide from a witch on a mission to speak to the dead. Maybe she wasn’t coming during the right time, she had a pair of keys - maybe come through at night would make more sense. “We live in America, everywhere - where we walk has been tainted by blood, war and violence. There isn’t a place on Earth that has is pure in the ways we want. No amount of cleansing or prayer or wishes can fear souls from the wrongs.”

“I don’t know that the dead who might linger here would get a choice. Or that it would be a blessing or a curse. I think some of them get trapped because something inside of them can’t process it. What happened to them, that they’re dead. They cling onto life. Especially if they died before their time.” Briefly the halfling turned her attention back to the painting of the woman who had brought so much misery onto that land. It was said that when the house burned, once everything that had happened inside had been discovered? People had tried to avoid the house, had crossed the street to avoid walking in front of it. That they people of New Orleans believed the evil that was perpetrated there lingered on infecting the very air around the property. And while the city itself could be superstitious in many ways? Laurel couldn’t actually say she didn’t understand that theory. “It would make sense. Could be why so many people who claim to encounter spirits encounter ones who seem angry. Wouldn’t you be if your life was cut short?”

The silence was awkward to say the least, usually it was just a statement she makes that people shut up and stare. However the question didn’t seem that odd, perhaps none of the previous guides offered to sit with her. It’s really not like she had anything better to do, yes during the day if tour guides are really bored they are told they can clean but really who cleans a giant place like this for fun when no one else is around. “Yes , they only need one person on at a time right now so typically if there’s another tour guide we just see each other in passing. And guests come for a tour and leave they usually only take an hour or hour and a half. Quite boring at times. There’s a few groups that’ll say they saw a ghost or got touched.” Shrugging lightly like the topic was nothing but filler.

“Would it really be so surprising if the dead lingered here?” Laurel asked, both of her dark eyebrows raised in question. Perhaps it would be a strange thing to ask were she speaking to a human. Humans were extremely divided on whether or not the dead could remain beyond death. They were also divided on whether the supernatural existed at all and whether or not they could be trusted. The unknown, understandably, seemed to scare them. And yet Laurel had always felt more comfortable with them than she had with the supernatural. Perhaps because until she was eighteen she might as well have simply been human, but the truth was that the supernatural knew that the dead sometimes lingered on. Sometimes it was just to get a glimpse of the living; sometimes it was to cause problems.Luckily for the rest of the world the dead didn’t have as much power as they liked to think. “Some say grounds marked by dark deeds like this one?Definitely would be a gathering spot for the spirits of the victims.”

“Oh gods no- could you imagine if someone thought it was a good story.” Her laugh was brief but it filled the space. It was a story to tell and should be heard, the people who were hurt during that time deserved to stay alive with the words. That their lives weren’t simply taken and meant for nothing. Glancing finally from the picture to the girl she eyed the bag. “Amazing, the Sam is going to be so happy it’s in.” Sighing she took the item from her, realizing that her afternoon was free as of the moment. The house really only did tours if people came in it was a rarity to have an ‘appointment’ for a tour. “Do you wanna stay for it? The house gets pretty freaky when it’s quiet too long.”

The halfing hesitated, if for no other reason than her own social awkwardness. She had no real reason to feel uncomfortable around the witch standing before her- dark witch, light witch, it was truly all the same to her- and yet her own anxiety gave her pause. More times than she could count Laurel had been in a social situation and completely froze up despite the person she was with offering her no reason to do so. She supposed she could just chalk it up to years of experience in being teased for what she was. And yet as a result that didn’t seem like a very valid reason even though to her it still felt like one. “Are you alone here a lot?” She supposed that would make sense outside of tourist season. Many businesses thrived on the people that came in and out of the city. As for the locals? Well, many of them stayed away from places like that. Especially the supernatural kind.

“Just one moment!” She heard someone walking around the front hall of the Lalaurie House, the footsteps echoing in the silence. Most would be uncomfortable, the vibes of a haunting now footsteps cutting through the peace. Instead the girl dug for the introduction card she had for whom ever was waiting. Popping up from behind the table – if she wanted to feel important, or do something more with her life she wouldn’t be working there – but there was a sense of calm with being the only on in such a beautiful home despite the horrors that happened once on the grounds. “I have your introduction card.” She stated breathlessly finally entering the ‘waiting’ room noticing them eyeing the large picture of the Marie Delphine LaLaurie. “She was very beautiful for her time.”

Laurel didn't socialize much. It was definitely a shortcoming of hers. She knew that it was something she should improve upon and yet it wasn't something she had ever been able to do much about. On the best of days she was socially awkward- on the worst she was downright silent. People have never been the kindest to her being a halfling and yet she knew she shouldn't necessarily isolate herself so much.But knowing it and doing what she should were two entirely different things. It was so much easier to stick to the status quo, to only speak to the people that came into her job. They were there for a reason; she was there to provide a service. It worked out well for both of them and she never had to worry about what they may think or say. It was simple; it was clean; it was the easiest way to live. But it was isolating and sometimes even sad to think about. Still,work was what had lead her to the LaLaurie Mansion that day, delivering tea for the main lobby. It had been thought that providing tea and coffee to people while they wait would be a good idea- lots of luck given how old some of the stuff there was and how people had a habit of not listening when told not to take their drinks elsewhere. The painting caught her gaze momentarily but almost as soon as she heard a voice behind her Laurel turned to see the source."Beautiful, yes, but not the best story, is it?" Offering a polite smile the halfling held out the bag in her hand. "Delivering the order for tea for the lobby."

The light chatter around the cafe was rather soothing. It wasn’t so busy that it sounded like buzzing so it was an atmosphere that Marcus could comfortably relax into. He was lounging in an armchair by the window, his long legs stretched out as he read his book. The pot of tea on his table was fresh, a gift from the barista after the poor young man had gotten caught in Marcus’ allure and he’d had to talk him down from trying to invite the Incubus into the store room. It was something Marcus had gotten use to. Some people were more susceptible to the natural hormones he gave off. Some only really felt the influence when he was trying.

Being use people approaching him he didn’t look up originally when he heard someone stop in front of his table. He assumed it might have been the barista again or the woman who had stroked her hand up his thigh when she had been sat next to him. Glancing up once he finished the page he was reading he blinked realising it was neither of those people. “Oh. I’m sorry. I was caught up in my book. I didn’t mean to ignore you.” @nola-starters

“No need to apologize,” the Halfling assured him, waving a hand slightly to wave off the very idea. In truth Laurel often tried to ignore people as much as she could. Socializing had never been her strong point and so she usually only spoke to them as much as she had to at work to do her job. But she also understood getting wrapped up in things, especially if it was something you happened to enjoy. Too often she had found herself doing the same thing at work, blocking out most of the world and focusing on whatever it was she was doing. It made the day go faster.

Moving over to the seat table next to him and taking a seat both of her eyebrows raised slightly as she nodded towards the book in question. “I was asking what you were reading. You seem very invested in it.” Most of the time when she saw people reading at the various shops and cafes in town it didn’t seem to be for pleasure. For work, perhaps. Or for school. Sometimes it seemed that reading for pleasure was a thing of the past. So when she saw people reading because they seemed to want to? Well, it peaked her interest.
