some of my final images
For my personal project I had originally planned to do a studio based project and create those shots into a pop art style.
However due to the corona virus I am unable to access the studio during this tough time. I am however able to adapt my idea to one that will still be successful and stay within government guidelines.
I would like to document my family life in this pandemic but in my own pop art style. I have began to write out plans how I plan to exacute these shoots. As we know the pandemic has forced us all to have to stay home I order to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe so this includes working from home. My family life has gotten pretty hectic now that four of us and a dog is all in the house at one time together!
I would like to document how each of my family members have adapted to having to work from home or even just doing things to keep themselves busy.
These below are some examples of plans that I plan to guide me through and help me through my shooting process.
Reciprocity law/ law failure
As there is less light, the silver halide grains will be struck by photons less evenly, causing the a dramatic drop in density after a few seconds of the correct exposure. This severely decreases the response to low light levels aka the films reciprocity failure. Not all film is the same- some will respond better than others.
B&W
Exposure in excess of 1-2 secs can result in reduced depth, resulting in very weak, if not non existant shadows
Colour neg
Exposures in excess of 20 secs, will result in shifting of colour, as the films dye layers can absorb light unevenly during prolonged exposure
Slide film
Exposures in excess of 5 seconds have similar colour shifts to colour negative film. This colour shift is extreme in high saturation film such as Fuji Velvia.
Digital Noise Removal
Blending Images Together
One type of noise removal after taking a photo is taking many images of one scene then using photoshops blending tool and joining the pictures together. This means that you’re taking shorter exposures to reduce the digital noise in the photo.
How to do it
Step 1 - Open the images you want to blend in one photoshop document.
Step 2 - Create a layer mask on the top layer.
Step 3 - Use the brush tool to blend in the lit parts into the photo, you can use the opacity of the brush to change how bright you can the area to be. White adds back the top layer whilst the black deletes the layer and makes brings in the lit parts.
Dark Frames - reducing digital noise
Dark frame - This is a technique used for reducing digital noise. with shooting at long exposures means that you will be creating more digital noise. This involves using multiple images with the same camera settings the lens cap on. With the lens cap on your camera, you will be capturing noise without any signal. This allows you to shoot a signal to noise ratio which will produce a better image quality.
Step By Step Guide:
Shooting
1- turn off long exposure noise reduction
2- shoot long exposure On RAW file
3- shoot similar image with the lens cap on (same settings etc)
optimisation
1- Open files into photoshop, including lens cap image
2- layers- place lens image above normal image
3- blending mode - lens cap mage to subtract - 100% zoom
final for illusion
optimisation and final image for recycle
Digital noise in photography
what is digital noise?
Digital noise is random pixels in a photograph that obscures detail and makes the picture have a lower quality standard. Photos can end up so noisy that they are unable to be used. When taking pictures with a digital camera an electronic sensor built from tiny pixels is used to measure the light for each of the pixel and the result becomes your photograph in the end.
what causes noise in photography?
You'll always have some amount of noise in your photograph as its not something you can prevent but it is something that you can control the intensity of it. Digital noise is a randomness caused by your camera sensor and internal electronics. By having a much higher ISO can cause a lot more noise especially when shooting in low light and its necessary to have a higher ISO.
A long exposure time can also be the cause of more digital noise. The longer the exposer the more light is being let into the lens therefore causing more noise to appear into your photograph.
Sensitivity and shutter speed is your main challenges when it comes to digital noise. Having a slow shutter speed causes the shutter to stay open for longer and the longer it is open the more noise will be introduced to the photograph.

This is our brief for our project. I have researched photos some photos that i would like to try and capture the techniques of them and what i what equipenmt i would need to photograph these photos.
Andy Buchanan
Andy buchanan came in to speak to us about our task that we have been given and advised us how to approach this brief and shooting your different subjects. His talk was really helpful and definatly helped in terms of what to take with we to make my shoot successful and create amazing shots.
when he explained how he's not a wiz at sports photography either it made me feel that little more relaxed about this brief.
He explained how capturing the action is very important of course but capturing the reaction is just as important. This can tell a story, if its a story of victory or defeat it helps to convey the emotions of the events that are taking place.
Composition
He explained to us how composition is important when it comes to photographing sports. Vary your shots is what he explained to us the more variation you have of different shots the better. This helps to create context. Always look for different perspectives when it comes to shooting sports, shot from a lower angle, go higher the person you're shooting doesn't always have to fill up the frame, you could even shoot them using rule of thirds. Basically keep experimenting the more shots you have the more you have to work with.
Extra research
one fact I learned when researching this brief is that you should always know your sport. As simple as it sounds make sure you research your sport before you go to shoot it, this will help you learn the rules, you don't have to play the sport but by doing the research of the sport it will help you to consider what is an excellent performance and when is the best times to capture the best moments.
capturing the best players. Don't worry about the shots that you've missed and just continue to focus on the shots you could capture at that moment in time. Location and timing is a crutical aspect in sports photography. Being in the right place and the right time requires a lot of planning as sometimes you can be restricted to where you are able to shoot from depending on the event you attend.
fast shutter speed
I want to be able capture the moment by freezing the action. By doing this I have to have a fast shutter speed.
panning
having a fast shutter speed can be helpful when it comes to freezing the action however by researching I have learned it can also be rather difficult at the same time and a better option might be panning.
what is panning?
panning is a technique that is used in photography to accurate the movements. In order to have this technique work you
illusion research
for my illusion project I want to go with a purge theme as that is what I am inspired by.
these are some of the images I have taken some inspiration from.
seeing the light finals/evaluation
seeing the light was a fun brief it was quite challenging at times as when you would go to shoot on a nice day the sun would always start to disappear!, Scottish weather is not the kindest at times. I would have to make sure i have everything planned and able to shoot quickly and still making sure i get quality shots.
my strongest image
i feel like this is my strongest image as the catch lights in her eyes are so prominent and really give them life to them. I also love the cropping of this image as the way i have framed it is just from the neck up so you are only focused on the face and this helps to really draw your attention to her eyes.
weakest image
i feel like this is my weakest image out of the four as i feel like i could have had a stronger catch light in the ages as they arent really that noticable and you would have to get a closer look to see them.
Overall thoughts
I enjoyed this brief as it was a chance to get to focus on daylight portraits and it was quite an interesting challenge getting to play around with the reflector. If i could do the brief again i would experiment even more as i feel like i was too afraid to push myself a bit more during this brief and i should've been less afraid of it and just pushed myself to do it.
