Dogwoods and Willow Trees
My father’s favorite tree is a dogwood tree, so is mine. Mine used to be a willow tree, like the one on my farm. We sit on a bench at our favorite park, eating ice cream from the truck he’d never let me go to before. The white petals dancing around us and filling my hair. I feel like a princess as the smell of spring fills my lungs. The memory of him yelling at my mother and his late from home far away in my mind. It is his weekend and he stresses I will soon meet his new friend; from his mouth she seems kind.
At home, during the week, my mother loses her mind quietly. She struggles to work as much as she can and balance motherhood. My father claims this is her fault, she does not speak his name. I tell her about his new friend and she asks me to go to my room and silently goes to hers. I overhear my grandmother say his friend is not new.
My father picks me up and we go to the park. His friend meets us there; she gives me snacks and takes photos of us. I overhear talk of purchasing a house, I am only six but I enjoy my dad’s apartment. At their wedding I pass out from the heat, my grandmother says it is an omen. I don’t know what that means.
I am 12 now, my mother sleeps most days. She fights for her sanity but still tries to make sure me and my brother are taken care of. My father’s home feels like hell itself as we pull up to his suburb, and my mother tells me she’s sorry. I can change it when I’m 14 with the judge. I no longer scream and cry as I exit the car. No one must pull me out with force, but it feels painful to trudge to the front door. The dogwood’s petals float all around and land in my hair, making me angry.
My siblings run to me, all more my children than siblings as I babysit them most weekends so my father and stepmother can have time together. I only have two right now but by next year there will be three. My stepmother locks up the snacks, she says they are for my siblings and that I eat too much. At dinner, because I did not eat my meal, she locks me in my room. I tried but I threw up. It was spaghetti with mushrooms, the doctors say it is because of my mind. She says it is privilege.
My stepmom takes my phone at night and when I’m in trouble and before bed. My mom gives me an extra phone to hide from my dad. I text my mother while crying, wanting to hurt myself again. Thirty minutes later she is in the drive with police cars. There is fighting, but the door unlocks and I am taken out by cops. My mom reports everything my stepmom has done from cutting my hair to my ears to keeping me in my room when she didn’t need me.
I haven’t seen my father’s family for a year. He calls me and tells me he is going to war in Iraq. I go to see him off, my siblings smile and jump in excitement after not seeing me. I tell them I love them and go home to my mother and younger brother. A year later at 15 I get a call from my dad asking me to go see my siblings. My mom is scared to take me but she says she will wait outside. As I climb the stairs to the front door, the smell of dogwoods turns my stomach, it fills my senses and haunts my memory.
I knock and my youngest brother answers, my sister cries, my other brother clings to my leg. We talk, they show me the new additions to their rooms even though my mom begged me to stay near the door. My stepmother grabs my shoulder, “You can’t just show up here for 15 minutes. Your sibling’s father might die at war, and you are just making things harder.” She spits through her teeth to a 15-year-old. I can’t handle it any longer, I turn and scream in her face that, “He is my father to.” These are the last words I say in front of my siblings, and she intended it that way.
My father calls angry because I have upset her. Years later, as an adult, I learn from my siblings she always told them I wasn’t their sister. They never listened. Dogwoods are my father’s favorite tree. Weeping willows are mine.
5 Haunted Places in Tennessee
1.) Wheatland Plantation- sevierville T.N.
Wheatland plantation in sevierville Tennessee is actually not the first home built on the land. The original home on the property actually burned to the ground claiming three young lives which were the original owner’s three grand daughters. It is said there is a child like presence in the basement. As well as some paranormal investigators catching some chanting and singing on recording equipment. Which may be explained by a mass grave located closely behind the residence consisting of 28 Cherokee Indians, 68 African slaves, and 2 revolutionary war soldiers. There have also been over 70 reported murders on the property and even blood stains lining the walls. So it seems as though it is definitely a paranormal hot spot.
2.) Hales Bar Marinia and Grill - Guild T.N.
At Hales Bar Marina and Grill on Nickajack Lake In Tennessee It isn't rare to hear Native American war crys, chanting, and to see ominous black figures. The dam was built in 1905 in an attempt to tame the whirled pool on the Tennessee river. However The Native Americans near the dam hated and even claimed to curse it. Local folklore claims if you get to close you may inevitably fall into the water and drown. If you're interested and daring they do offer tours of the haunted location. But you should keep in mind people have reported Native american figures circling the waters and a girl in a pink dress wandering the property. Legend claims the young girl got to close to the water, drown, and her body still lies deep beneath the lake.
3.) Bell Witch Cave - Adams Tennessee
If you haven't heard of the bell witch cave you may be living under a rock. With movies and pop culture even referencing to the legend it wouldn't be crazy to claim it may be one of the most notorious haunted places in Tennessee. The legend is based on a feud between two families. John Bell living next to Kate Batts. Kate believed that she had been wronged and cheated in a land deal with the Bell family. As a result of this Kate would go on to torture John’s daughter, Betsey, for the majority of her childhood. Because the family feud was so strong Batts claimed on her death bed that she would haunt the Bell family for the rest of eternity. The haunting gained a lot of its popularity when future president, currently general, Andrew Jackson, stayed on the property with his men for a night. He was quoted after saying “ I had rather take on the entire British army than spend another night with the bell witch.” The home itself had gotten so popular it was torn down for safety reasons. However you can still visit the cave today where you may experience strange looking animals, chain rattling, and strange constant knocking.
4.) Rotherwood Mansion - Kingsport T.N.
Built in 1818 by a very wealthy Rev. Fredrick Ross and intended to be a haven for the family Rotherwood Mansion in Kingsport Tennessee ended up being a prison of the hopes of one woman. Ross’ daughter, Rowena, watched her fiance drown in a nearby river on the day of their wedding. She then went into a depression and lived in solitude for many years. When she did finally find another love she was heart broken again when he was taken from her by yellow fever only a year into their marriage. Rowena tried one more hand at happiness when she married her third love and even bared a baby girl by him. But he passed away soon after as well. sending her spiraling and she drown herself in the same river her first love had died in. Now it is said that you can see Rowena wandering the property in a white dress searching for her first love. Later the land fell into the hands of a slave owner and reports of a black dog wandering the land, howls late at night, disembodied laughter in the dark, and ghostly eyes looking through the windows had been made.
5.) Sensabaugh Tunnel - Kingsport T.N.
Sensabaugh Tunnel can also Be found in Kingsport Tennessee. Built in the 1920′s and named after the lands owner, Edward Sensabaugh. It is, in fact, one of the most well known local legends. There are three versions of this legend. The first version of the legend is that Edward let a homeless man in his him as a charitable act. It is said that this man tried to steal jewelry from Sensabaugh and Edward held him at gun point. The man used Edwards baby daughter as a shield to get away and drown the baby in the tunnel. The second version of this legend is that Edward simply wnet insane and killed the family placing thier bodys in the tunnel. And the third and most believed theory is that Edward actually lived to an old age not dying until the 1950′s and all of his children survived. But as he got older vandals and teens would use the tunnel for fun and graffiti. So Sensabaugh would sneak down to the other end of the tunnel letting a sharp shriek. The tunnel is covered in graffiti and a small stream runs through from the creek. Legend says that if you park your car in the middle of the tunnel and turn the engine off it wont start back for several minutes. As someone who has personally done this i can confirm its happened to me, be it a fluke or not. Reports have also been made of baby crys, Edward himself walking through the tunnel, and a woman appearing in back seats. Personally me and friends have experienced thrown rocks, car and radio malfunctions, whispers, and even being pushed. So go experience this intense haunting if you dare.
