going absolutely bonkers over how much this reddit thread is making me rethink lore
there are a LOT of things that make a LOT more sense when you separate "life force" into a third thing besides soul and memory. i still need time to process all of them. and i have questions about individual scenes/events still, like i want a list of times 生命力 was used in JP but life force wasn't in EN. but holy shit.
I think (and hope) this reddit thread might make things clearer for some people! But I do want to reiterate that all of this is still laid out in the EN... just perhaps not as clearly. A lot of this relies on people understanding the core tenants of aether lore.
As described in the thread, aether in JP is divided into three categories: 魂 (tamashii), the soul; 記憶 (kioku), memories; and 生命力 (seimei-ryoku), life force. Likewise in EN, this concept is first explained that there are two main types of aether: incorporeal, that of the soul and memories both, and corporeal, that of the body/flesh/blood.
So in EN most people should recognize those terms. What is less clear is that "life force" has also been used synonymously with what we understand as corporeal aether since ARR. It's a frequently used term in the lore, and has been explained to be synonymous with corporeal aether. The issue is it's just not always consistently called life force. The EN localization uses many different colloquial terms for aether depending on who we talk to and when we are in the story, and that definitely can cause confusion. The most notable example of this misunderstanding is Y'shtola's/Matoya's conversation about using her "life force" to see in HW. She's using corporeal aether, like any spellcaster would, to be able to see.
Fortunately this term has seen much more use in the 6.x patches and DT especially since it's relevant to the story (about 10 uses between 6.1 through base 7.0). But if you're curious about some (by no means is it an exhaustive list) other places we've seen life force used before, I definitely recommend searching for the term in the aetherology compilation.

Let's just pretend the glow changes based on the colour of the soul he has dragged back from the Star. Chained forever in partial service to the weapon that aided their return.
