There was something in Benny. I saw him stand over his buddy, keeping him breathing, talking so gently. I thought that was the core of him, and the rest was fear, just like me. I thought if I gave him a chance...

Benny talking gently, trying to keep this man alive? I think the man who died in Benny's arms on the night of Benny's Embrace could've been Benny's lover.

We know very little about what happened that night. Max just mentions that Benny's "buddy" was injured and that Benny spoke gently to him as he died; Max doesn't say anything about who or what injured him or even why Max was there in the first place.

Max, did you... did you kill Benny's boyfriend? I could see Max accidentally injuring him during a Frenzy.

Also, there's something about the word buddy here. Not friend, not partner, just... buddy. It kind of feels like Max is downplaying this man's importance in Benny's life, which would be delightfully fucked up if he was indeed Benny's lover.

I did wonder if the person Max saw could have been Bennys lover, I didn’t consider that Max could have accidentally been the reason he died in the first place, that is JUICY. TBH Max downplays the whole embrace and because he meant well fundamentally misunderstands it from Bennys perspective

Its probably one of the worst night of his life already, someone he cares about dies in his arms; then he gets murdered and turned into a monster – and the person that killed him thinks he was HELPING?! Tells him to be better, preaches at him about self control, when he’s directly responsible for making him this thing even less well equipped to restrain his worst impluses. As far as Bennys concerned any vestigial hope of being a better person died on that pavement.

Not to absolve Benny of any of his violent reactionary assholery, and im sure he was a piece of work as a human. But im not surprised Max was never able to get through to him either.
