If You Fall in a Forest...You'll Find Ritual in Rave
Recently, I've found myself analysing the true importance of editing. It's no new revelation to state that post-production is highly important to a video however, now I see this stage as one of the most personal.
The project If You Fall in A Forest...You'll Find Ritual in Rave that I undertook with fellow artist Eve Walker-Rawson saw us both editing the same footage (that we directed together) separately. Unaware of the other person's interpretation, we projected the pieces alongside each other in a video installation.
Despite having the same foundation, our respective films were conflicting in both visuals and emotional implication. Our videos were like identical twins dawning appearances in a bid to be distinct. To cling onto individuality. A small part of me questions if this was the result of a subconscious knowing that there was a video of the same contents being made alongside our own.
Regardless, this diptych stands as a demonstration of my editing style brewed from both my personality and preferences and boiled by my desire to find a sense of uniqueness. Editing has become thirteen year-old me's leather jackets and knee ripped jeans to me. One day I hope to grow into a process that truly feels like me, rather than what I think it should be.
