Bailed || Dexter & Rose
Dexter drove down the street, heading back towards the home he had once shared with his sisters before moving in with Lydia. Though he enjoyed living with his girlfriend, he did at times miss the eccentricity of his old place, Nina’s room smelling of weed and posters scattered about the place, female products everywhere. Sometimes it still felt strange to Dex that he no longer lived with his family, but was out on his own doing things. Sometimes he missed that old part of his life. He wondered what his parents would think of him now, seeing him with a job and a place of his own. He was sure that they didn’t expect him to be the first to move out on their own and frankly neither had he.
He turned the radio on and let the music play softly under their voices as they continued to speak. As Rose asked him about work, Dexter gave a small shrug, glancing over at his sister before returning his gaze to the road ahead. “A bit of both. I mean, mostly working the store but I’ve been trying to get more gigs in.” He said, though now with the extra hours he was pulling in he found that he had to reserve his time to comedy solely on the weekends. Not that that was much of a deal though since most open mics tended to run on the weekends, but still it meant he had less time to practice. Though of course that never stopped him from getting a joke or two in at work to a customer or coworker. “I have been sort of writing new material though… not a lot but some.” He added with another shrug.
As Rose began to speak, mentioning climbing the fence to get her car, Dexter was ready to playfully call her out on her words but then she herself was saying how she’d likely get stuck and Dexter couldn’t help but let out an amused chuckle. “Yeah, you’d end up like me that one time I tried to sneak out of the house and got my foot stuck in the fence and woke mom and dad up.” He said with another chuckle. He thought back on that particularity embarrassing moment in his life, grinning to himself and wondering if there was a good joke to be found in that. He was pulled back from his thoughts as Rose agreed to getting food, mentioning that she could go for a salad. Dexter glanced over at her, giving her a look as she nudged him before smiling. “I said food not plants.” He teased. “And hey! For your information, I do love talking to you. You’re my big sis! You know I have nothing but love for you.” He said, playfully nudging her back, his gaze shifting between her and the road as he grinned.
Rose placed her elbow against the car door and leaned her head against the palm of her hand. She was staring distantly out the window as her brother spoke. "Oh, okay." He must have been working hard at the music store and it made her feel more guilty about having him bail her out. Rose didn't say anything about it though, she didn't want to interrupt him to apologize. She would bring it up later, when the time felt right. "New stuff, huh?" Her brow rose as she took her eyes off the road and faced Dexter, "Well now I have to go to one of your shows." It had been too long since she showed her support for her little brother and she didn't want him to think she was neglecting him.
Her face broke into a smile as she thought about Dexter waking up their parents. It hadn't crossed her mind in awhile but it always brought amusement. Rose laughed and grabbed her face, "I almost forgot about that!" She never thought her siblings were bad seeds or anything but they had their moments. Rose had been a bit late to the start, though, and had only been showing signs of trouble once she graduated college. It wasn't on purpose, she had the best intentions, but it was much easier to be thrown in jail now that she was an adult than it had been when she was only a teenager. Rose pushed aside thoughts of herself and kept smiling, "I think you woke up the whole neighborhood."
"Hey!" She rolled her eyes at Dexter's comment. Rose was used to hearing him poke fun of her diet. He was reluctant to become a vegan, or even a vegetarian, and it was a battle she was had nearly given up on. At least she could feed him good food when he came to visit. Rose could argue with Dexter until she was blue in the face but she wasn't going to sway him. Although she liked making him try new things. "We can get some tofu instead." Rose wouldn't have minded but she mostly made the suggestion to make her brother squirm. Rose looked up at her younger brother, "I know. And I love you too. But sometimes..." The words trailed off with a grin, "You're kind of a bonehead."
