@micah-faolan
Oh, yeah,
Yes you were. So how was your holiday? I feel like it’s been forever since I last saw you. I think it was just before Christmas.
It was great. I've been having a great time.
How were your holidays?
Oh, yeah,
I watched the New York special with my dad. I don’t know what it’s called. He said a man named Dick Clark used to do it.
We also drank sparkling apple cider.
That sounds great!
I was in the park, watching the fireworks over the lake.
Oh, yeah,
Happy New Year, Micah!
What did you do to celebrate?
Oh, yeah,
You know you’re a day late right?
I was close.
Oh, yeah,
Happy New Year.
Dear Friends ~ Aiden, Micah & Nina
Aiden had spent the entire summer redecorating his room. It was never an overnight change. He had to get rid of everything that had to do with his old design and then put effort into bringing his new idea to life. Sometimes he got bored with the way his room looked but most of the time he just couldn’t shake the images that came to him and he had to share them. April had been rather surprised to see her son lugging a can of black paint to his room but she didn’t question it much, there never seemed to be a reason for her to worry about Aiden, he was happy. He painted over the underwater world he had created, replacing it with darkness, and added glow and dark stars everywhere. Saturn, Venus and Earth were painted across his wall but the rest of the planets were hanging on his ceiling, Mercury was placed above his bed. During the day he kept his curtains open, having painted the sun around the window and at night he pulled the curtain closed because a picture of the moon was embedded into the fabric. Even his bedding, which he made from materials he got when he shopped for yarn with Greta, was made to look like it was part of outer space.
It wasn’t quite night yet but Aiden had his curtain pulled shut because he was hanging out with his best friend, Nina, and their new friend Micah. It was a rarity for Aiden to be quiet but he was a bit mesmerized by his own artwork, particularly the way the stars glowed around the planets. Aiden wasn’t into hard drugs (had never even tried them) but he liked to smoke pot because it made him feel more relaxed. He didn’t have the compulsion to get up and go until he passed out like he did when he was sober. Instead of feeling as though he was missing life, he could just sit there and enjoy a little piece of it. When he was with Nina though, sometimes he smoked more than he normally would have if he was just by himself. Aiden blinked and slowly peeled himself away from the ceiling, with Nina between them, he then looked at his two friends who were lying next to him. “We should go downstairs.” He reminded them, though it took him a little while longer to remember why they needed to get up, “Oh! Because we have to make a cake.” It was going to be Rose’s birthday and Aiden had invited them over to help him make a cake for her. “For your sister’s birthday!”
Micah was comfortable where he was laying. He felt like he was in space, as he stared at the planets around him. Aiden's room was really cool. The fact that he was stoned beyond belief only made it better. A lazy smile danced on his lips as he zoned out. Nina's tiny body was pressed against his, but instead of feeling someone else, he was now just used to having his friend close; like she was a part of him. It wasn't the first time they'd shared a bed. Neither of them knew how long they'd been there and, for being in Aiden's presence, they were all pretty quiet. It was Nina's fault. Being around her two best friends made her more excited about the prospect of everyone being high than she usually was, so she'd rolled two blunts and had them both being passed around at once. Finishing them both had been a difficult feat for the three of them, and the effects of all of the marijuana was now clear.
The small girl felt Aiden shift next to her, so she carried her glossy eyes over to him. When he reminded them that they should go downstairs, Micah nodded, but neither he nor Nina was sure why they had to do so. Thankfully, Aiden was there to keep the two on track, reminding them of Rose's upcoming birthday. Nina's eyes widened as a smile cracked across her face. "We should make her a special cake," she suggested. Her older sister was not as big a smoker as she was, but she couldn't imagine anything better than receiving a huge cake that would get you high. She sat up between the boys that she spent a majority of her time with and looked at both, excited at the idea. "I can make the butter," she said, thinking back to exactly how much bud she had on her at the moment, and then trying to remember the exact process. She was almost positive that she could do it.
Micah sat up, following Nina's lead. He looked from her, over to Aiden. "That would be cool," he agreed. He would eat cake with pot in it. He wasn't exactly motivated to get up and actually make a cake, but since it was for Rose, he could easily make himself.
Happy Birthday, River Phoenix (August 23, 1970 – October 31, 1993)
"River and I would talk about getting old, being in our 50s together, how it’d probably take us that long to get to work together. There was something gorgeous about us being old together. River will be missed — period. I mean now, more than ever I wish I could talk to him." – Joaquin Phoenix
Micah told her that he was fine and while she wanted to believe him she couldn’t help but tilt her head in disbelief. He reassured her again and she looked down. Rose felt guilty for not being there with him.
"Micah, I don’t need you to be sorry." She wasn’t putting his apology down but she didn’t want it. "I just want to make sure you’re safe." Rose blindly grabbed for papers and started to stack them up as she thought about what to say next, "I should have been watching you more carefully. Something was up and I shouldn’t have looked the other way. I should be sorry.”
It made him feel guilty that Rose seemed to take responsibility of his overdose. He knew that it was not out of the ordinary for her, as her worrying about him had been one of the ultimate downfalls of their relationship. He didn't want her to mother him, but he knew it came from a place of caring. "I'm not your responsibility, Rose." No matter how many times he tried to tell her that, though, he knew it wouldn't sink in. He knew that Rose had good intentions; he loved her for them, but he didn't want to be the source of such upset. "You don't need to be sorry at all. I'm okay. Nina was there, she got me to the hospital. I messed up, but I'm okay now."
River Phoenix photographed by Mark Contratto (1991)
Rose returned her friend’s smile before returning her attention to the papers in front of her. She fell silent for awhile, her teeth sank into her bottom lip as she tried to hold her tongue. It wasn’t long before Rose couldn’t let her worry spill out from her mouth. “So, are you okay?" She asked and then placed her hands on the table in front of her, “We don’t have to talk about it." Rose didn’t doubt that Micah already knew what she was talking about, “But I want to make sure that you’re okay. I’m around if you need to talk, you know that right?"
Her concern was apparent on her face. Micah was bummed out that he'd worried Rose so much. He hadn't meant to do that. He should have known, though, how his overdose would affect her. She was no stranger to him. A frown tugged at the corner of his lips. "I'm fine," he tried to tell her, but it wasn't the first time he'd said it, so the words clearly weren't getting far. "Really, Rose, I'm okay." He offered her a weak smile.
"I know, and I appreciate that," he told her honestly. One of the things that had originally attracted him to Rose was how easy it was to talk to her. He hadn't talked to anyone about what he was going through before his overdose. He didn't want her to take it personally. "I'm sorry." The list of what he was sorry about was a long one.
