A small smile made its way onto her lips at his comment. Of course, no one had realised that she was pregnant, other than her parents whom she had told as soon as she realised that she was safe, that they were safe. Her hand made its way back to settling on the tiny bump of her stomach. Even the thought of losing them made her feel sick. No, she would have to push those types of thoughts away. “Early March sometimes, the date really means nothing as when do babies ever arrive on the day you are told?” She said, unable to stop herself from laughing. She had joined a group for expectant mothers the other day and there were many women there that already had kids, and they had said not to pay attention to it. She had decided to take their word for it as they were the experienced ones.
Noticing that he made an attempt to keep himself out of her way she waved her spare hand in the air, as if telling him not to worry about it. Of course, it made no sense but she was too preoccupied with trying to think of things to say to take notice of this. ”Don’t worry, I will be fine. Just me being unprofessional over here.” She brushed off what he said, while it was sweet of him she did not feel like she needed special treatment. Moving her left hand away from her stomach feeling self conscious she leaned back in the chair and listened to what he had to say. Brian, that name suited him. “Law degree? That sounds like a handful, but you seem nice enough so I don’t see why not we cannot give you a two week trial.” Waiting for him to finish talking she replied back to him. She was disappointed that he was not available for full time, but she was not surprised as he seemed like he would have his life in order. “You will get paid of course.” She added, not wanting to think he would get nothing from it. Not like me, here I am working in the family coffee shop. Inwardly groaning at that thought a pained expression crossed her face, only to be quickly replaced by a friendly smile. “When would you like to start, and if you could inform me of your schedule so I do not ask you to work when you have classes or studies that would be great.” Seeing someone walk towards the counter in the corner of her eye she began to get up from the chair, relieved to see that it was her mother. Phew, she could relax more now. “If you want we could arrange a few days of training instead of the trial?” She asked, her attention going back to Brian. She knew she should not be as indecisive as this in front of him as she was the manager, but she preferred to give them options before everything started to get organized.
She had the most beautiful smile he had ever seen. There have been many girls that he admired - both near and far - and yet she was the one that made him realize that there was pure beauty in the world. In a way, she reminded him of his mother, how hard she worked, how even though she was pregnant and had bouts of sickness every once in a while, it didn't stop her from doing what she needed to do. He admired that about her, along with how loving her smile was when it came to her unborn children. He had noticed that she used the plural form of the word, and had a feeling that she was going to give birth to twins. What a special opportunity, one that while not as rare as other sets of children was still a blessing in itself. He smiled at her, shaking his head in agreement. "You're right. I heard I was supposed to be born sometime in August and ended up being born a week or two early. Luckily I was still healthy when it happened. Well, congratulations and I'm sure you're extremely excited."
He knew it had nothing to do with being unprofessional, and there would be no way that she should get penalized for it. He just nodded and agreed with her, not wanting to upset her when he was still trying to get a job. Even if he didn't end up working here, he wouldn't mind coming by whenever he could, checking to see how she is doing and seeing if she needed anything. After all, it was the least he could do now that he knew her situation. As long as he didn't offend her in any way, he hoped that he would be able to be a part of her life, either professionally or amicably.
He knew that working on getting his law degree could possibly put some people off about hiring him, but it was better that he told them from the get go rather than hiding it later on and risk getting fired. When she said it sounds like a handful, he tensed, waiting to hear that his schedule wouldn't fit what they needed. Instead she offered him a two-week trial period, something that he wasn't expecting and gave a small sigh of relief. "That would be great. Getting paid or not, I would still be okay with a two-week trial. That way I can learn the ropes and see if I will be able to handle it." Honestly, he would have felt better if he wasn't being paid during his trial, especially since he had no idea how to do the job yet. It would be like an internship, where he would learn how to do what he needed to do before he asked to be paid. But she offered, and he wondered if it would be rude of him to decline a paycheck.
His eyes turned towards the counter as well, wondering if it was another customer or someone she might have known. Judging from her relaxed expression, it must have been someone she recognized, as she didn't get up quickly to reach the counter. He turned back to face her. "I can print out a schedule of my classes tomorrow and bring it in to you. I don't have one on hand at the moment. I can start as early as tomorrow evening. The training and the trial can commence at the same time if that's easier with you. Or the training can come first and then the trial. I'm flexible in doing this however you feel more comfortable handling it."

I feel like so many times, as a woman especially, it´s always like you have to play the good girl or the bad girl and I like the fact that Eve is neither those things. I think that is what really attracted me.

Seeing his concern for her welfare she couldn’t help, but feel surprised. Granted, men usually did but it was never at work. It was usually when she was out and about and they wanted something. Men always wanted something, didn’t they? Grumbling this to herself in her mind Maisie Looked over at him, forcing a weak smile onto her face. “Oh, yeah I am fine just one of the perks of being pregnant.” She replied, patting her belly absentmindedly. Before she had wondered why pregnant women did this, finding it odd, but now she thought it was sweet. It made her feel closer to her baby. The most important person in the world to her and she had not even met them yet.
Maisie was finishing making the drink when she heard him speak about being interested about the job. A look of relief flashed over her face, turning around she placed the glass cup on a tray before selecting things to go with the drink, such as a straw and a few cookies. “Well in that case, I will come sit with you. Adding her cup of iced tea to the tray she picked it up, guiding him to a table that was on the opposite side of where the students were, but also in the sight of the counter and the door. She was the only one in the store after all that was working, so she had to make sure she was keeping an eye on things. Setting the tray of drinks down on the table she took the drinks off the tray so they were placed in front of them both. “Well that is a relief,” Maisie eyed him, taking a few minutes to gather her thoughts. “There are still positions available, both full time and part time.” Taking a sip of her drink through a straw she stared over at him, not wanting to seem desperate for staff she said no more despite the fact that she could have easily rambled on about how short staffed they were. Truthfully it may have been that she had not talked to anyone properly in at least three days, and talking to customers that ordered things was not the same. “Thanks for caring earlier, that was nice of you.” She managed to speak between drinking the iced tea. ”It isn’t the best paying job but I promise you that you will be treated as one of the family.” She stated, pushing away the now empty cup to the side. “I’m Maisie by the way, my parents own this place. Care to tell me a bit about yourself?” She introduced herself to him, not bothering to hold out her hand as it would have been awkward considering they were both sitting down.
He didn't get a good look at her body, but he wouldn't have guessed she was pregnant. It would certainly explain the sudden sick feeling that came over her just earlier, now that he thought about it. "Congratulations. Do you know when you're due?" It seemed like he was being completely nosy but he was really just glad to hear it. A woman being pregnant with a baby and being happy about it was always something nice to see. There were too many soon to be mothers that hated being pregnant, and some even went to the point of wanting to get rid of their baby as soon as they were born. Thank goodness his mother did nothing of the sort, but he was still friends with those in that very situation and it made him feel sorry for them. He didn't pity them and believe that they couldn't amount to anything, but he wished that they had a mother's love the way that he did. He wouldn't be where he was without his mother, and he would always remember everything she did for him to the end of this days.
So maybe she had some good news for him, especially since she said she would sit with him as he drank his tea. He hoped for the best, and wondered if this was going to be a preliminary interview for before he actually applied. He followed her to an empty table, one he realized gave her a view of the counter and the door. It was a smart move since she was the only one working this shift, and he made sure that he wasn't obstructing her view in any way. If something happened, he would make sure that he either let her handle her business or help in any way that he could. He didn't even know her name and already he was feeling protective over her. It was probably due to the fact that she was protecting an innocent unborn baby inside her, but even if she wasn't, she seemed friendly enough that he wouldn't wish any ill will on her.
He sat down after she had finished setting the drinks on the table, making sure that he was paying attention to her and being ready in case she had to run to the restroom. He didn't know if her bouts of nausea were random or came at certain intervals, so he prepared for it nonetheless. "It was nothing. I just wouldn't want you to feel horrible and you're the only one watching the shop. I hope it subsided though, but if not, just let me know and I'll let you take care of yourself." He hoped that he wasn't coming off as a jerk, or as a flirt, but kept quiet after his last bit and stayed silent as she spoke about the position.
"Hi Maisie. I'm Brian. Well, as much as I don't like that question, I'll try my best. I'm in my freshman year of law school, hoping to get my degree in three or four years, however long it takes me at the university. I do have a lot of homework and studying to do for law school, I won't lie about that, but I think that taking up a part-time job will help me support myself while I'm here. We aren't allowed to take any full-time positions in our first year since it will be very intense, but I'm pretty sure I could handle a part-time position. I've never worked at a coffee shop before, but I'm willing to learn whatever it takes to make sure that I do my job effectively and the best that I can. Aside from my class schedule, I am pretty much flexible to work, especially at nights if you need a reprieve or someone to cover your shift."
He stopped, hoping that his answer would suffice. It was really hard for him to talk about himself without feeling like he was boring people. There wasn't much to him that he thought would be extremely desirable for the job, but hopefully his brief description of himself would do him justice.

Looking up from the book she was reading at the counter, Maisie heard the bell that signalled that someone had opened the door. Looking up she saw a handsome guy walk in. Smiling back she closed her book, making sure to mark the page that she was reading. Folding the corner of the page had always been one of her bad habits, and despite the fact that her parents would try to stop it the habit had not left her.
Today was a rather quiet day, not that she minded. They were short staffed so today she had most of the shift to herself. “Sure thing,” Maisie responded, pressing the button to inform the machine of what the customer wanted. “That will be five dollars, will you be having it here or take away?” Glancing back up at him she asked him this as she stared at his face. Her day had not been that well, with morning sickness starting to rear its ugly head. The smile was strained now as she felt bile rise up her throat. “Sorry, give me a minute.” She managed to say, before taking a large gulp from the glass of iced tea she had set to the side for herself. ”Anything else you want?” She asked him as she moved over to take the dirty cup that that another customer set on the counter, thanking them before putting it in the sink behind her. Turning to face him she smiled apologetically. “Short of staff, sorry for the delay.” She said this, before beginning to make his drink.
She was beautiful in a natural way, something that he wasn't used to seeing around here in the city. There were so many girls that seemed to put a lot into their appearance, obsessing over the latest make up and and newest clothes. With the girl in front of her, she just seemed to be herself, and she seemed to be comfortable in her own skin. Of course, he could be completely wrong and maybe she was wearing make up but he couldn't help but admire her beauty.
He took out his wallet from his back pocket, checking to see how much cash he had on hand as he debated her question. He wouldn't mind working here, getting to know this girl better and being in a place where the ambiance was calm and soothing. Maybe working here would be the perfect balance of studying a stressful subject. "I'll have it here, thank you." He took out a five dollar bill and held it towards her when he noticed her turning pale quickly. She looked like she was going to be sick, and when she excused herself, he got concerned.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, forgetting that she had asked him a question first. He didn't know anything about her, but he knew that it must have been rough working while being sick. He shook his head, knowing full well that being short staffed wasn't something she could control. "Don't worry about it. That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about."
"I saw your help wanted sign on the window, and I was wondering if you still had any open positions."

Technically, he wasn't supposed to be working during his first year in law school, but Brian had no other choice. He needed a way to not only pay for tuition and books, but even a place to stay and some food to eat. It was going to be hard, and he knew law school was no joke, but he was determined to finish with his degree and eventually work for one of the best law firms in the city. It was his goal, and he would do anything and everything he could to see it happen. So even though he knew that working while studying through his first year would be borderline mental, he began his long and stressful journey of finding a job.
He spent a couple of hours going through the newspaper's classified ads, debating on whether or not he would be able to handle the stress of studying with the work load that each job would entail. After the words on the pages seemed to blend together, he felt sick, and knew that he had done enough job searching for the night. He sighed, leaning back on his chair and taking a drink of water. Who knew that looking for a job would be this stressful? He stifled a yawn, looking at his watch and realizing that he still needed to read a few chapters of his textbooks before next week.
Time for some caffeine.
He left the library for the night, dropping off his things at the dorm he was staying at for the time being. Instead of making his own with the new coffee pot, he opted to take a walk and stretch his legs. His mind was scattered, thinking about a million things that he had to do. So much reading, so much studying, so many things to pay for that he didn't want to think about. His feet moved automatically, not even paying attention to where he was going. It wasn't until something made him turn towards his reflection that he saw a sign, the kind of sign that he had been looking for all night.
Help Wanted.
And it was at a coffee shop, of all places. He stood out there for a few moments, thinking about whether he should go in or not. There was no way that he could make enough money working at a coffee shop, but it was something that he could handle, maybe even the kind of job that would allow him to do some studying when business was slow. His curiosity got the best of him, and he eventually walked in, ready to put his fate and his life in the hands of the girl behind the counter.
He gave her a small smile as he made his way to the counter, the place practically empty save for another student sitting at one of the tables with his laptop and a bunch of books surrounding him. Instead of immediately asking about the open position, he ordered his drink, thinking that some small talk would make it easier for him to decide if this was where he wanted to work during his law school career or not. Only time would be able to tell.
"Can I order a Chai Iced Tea please?"
