December 31st, 2018: Mars enters Aries.
The threshold of 2019 is quickly verging upon us. It’ll be here sooner than you’d think. For some people in the world, it’s just another year that’s passing by. Nothing more than a calendar change, a reason to get drunk, and a day to make promises that you don’t intend on keeping. No biggie. But I’m betting that for most of you reading this post, New Years will be a huge deal! Especially this particular one. Because I’m sure I’m not the only witch that’s eager to yeet 2018 with all of it’s astrological b.s. retrogrades, break ups, and “remember whens?” straight into the past where the past belongs. Behind us. The sooner, the better!
We don’t have time to linger on what’s lost in our lives anymore. We don’t have time to putter around on what could’ve been or should’ve been but was never destined to be. There is a bright future ahead of us, just beyond the New Year’s horizon, screaming at us to take it by the horns! And that future is being made right now. In the present. So fill up your spiritual tank with some magic power and rev up those engines, Tumblr friends, and wandering spirits. It’s time for what’s exciting! It’s time for what’s new! It’s time for what’s fresh!
It’s time for some freakin’ action as Mars enters Aries on New Years Eve and starts 2019 off with a bang!
This transit has the distinct impressions of a child taking their first, bold steps into a brand new world. Aries is the initiatory sign of the zodiac and represents the dawning awareness of individuality that every newborn comes to when they separate “me” from the rest of the world. Mars is the planet of war, passion, and fire-branded action. It gives us the drive to do. So December 31st will definitely be experienced on full throttle with very little patience as baby New Years (us) is gonna wanna go, go, go! And not stop for much of anything or anyone else unless it ignites our interests.
Who can blame us though? After a whole year stuck analyzing our pasts in a retrograde wind tunnel, we need a little forward momentum to help us kick the dust off our lives! We might get all fired up about actually doing that thing we’ve been hesitating on for the longest time. Or we might completely veer off, rather impulsively, into new and uncharted territory…without much thought towards where we’re going or what the end result might be. We’re dancing to the tune of our own muse here, people! So step out of the way if you aren’t dancing too, right? But with a cocktail of asteroid Chiron (the wounded healer) and the North Node of destiny in the mix, that’s okay! Breaking away from tradition, from what we’ve known, or have been doing this whole time might be the very tonic we need to refresh ourselves spiritually in the beginning of 2019! New ideas pop up rapidly, decisions are made quick, and things happen lightning fast when Mars enters it’s native placement of Aries. Just watch yourself though. Try not to get TOO carried away! Uranus is squaring the guiding North Node. It has the tendency to be iconoclastic for the sake of it. So unless your situation calls for a drastic change of pace, try not to burn it all down for the sake of your independence alone. There are other ways to pursue your destiny with your authenticity intact.
What’s motivating us to take such sweeping actions? What’s finally got our blood all inflamed and boiling over? Why are we saying to ourselves in resolved proclamations that it’s ‘now or never, do or die’?
Let me ask you this, since we’re talking about baby’s first steps and the like: What’s the first expectation we have as newborn infants? And more often than not in this world, the first expectation we have that’s crushed?
That our parents will love us for who we are and what we uniquely represent.
Let me break the impetus down for you here. The waning moon is in Scorpio with Neptune. This aspect brings up a deep emotional and psychological desire to be what we imagine others expect us to be in order to gain admiration or devotion… coupled with a secret undercurrent of angry resentfulness that comes with being inauthentic to ourselves and our inner truth for too long. The moon isn’t too happy or comfortable in the sign of Scorpio and it’s especially not pleased by Neptune’s glamour guise as it tries to fake what it is not in order to gain the Sun’s and Saturn’s approval. Scorpio has never been the sign of fake pleasantries the way Neptune in Pisces is.
Hanging out in the authoritarian sign of Capricorn, the planet Saturn, and our dearly beloved Sun is calling us to remember our obligations to family. This pair is all about loyalty to tradition, honoring your ancestral roots, and carrying out your duties and commitments without question. And they just so happen to be teaming up with the moon in a neat little sextile that adds some rather hot fuel to this New Years fire.
A quote by Alexandra Adornetto, author, and definite spirit guide for this Alizar Astro AAAA coins what New Year’s Eve is trying to convey very poignantly to us…
“That was one of the saddest things about people—their most important thoughts and feelings often went unspoken and barely understood.”
December 31st’s planetary formation is the plight of the young kid forced to go to football camp after telling their parents that they don’t want to be an athlete but attempting to be a quarterback anyways to appease their parent’s authority and pushing aside their own dreams of being a video game designer. Until suddenly they’ve become a bitter adult and all they’ve done is what their parents have laid out for them in an attempt to please.
This is the young teen coming out to their parents for the first time and explaining that they’re gay, interested in witchcraft, aromantic, or into some sort of social taboo that immediately gets shut down and pushed away in the hopes that “the phase” is starved out. Now the teen is hiding things and possibly endangering themselves.
This is the astrological aspects of the young adult telling their mom that they’re going to chase their dream to be a musician and their mom telling them not to quit their day job sarcastically. Said young adult listens to the negativity, doing the exact same thing to their kid, and continuing the cycle of abuse when they show any troublesome signs of ambition.
This is anyone who’s ever given up and given in while quietly seething inside because their family or society beat the dream out of them. And for New Years Eve, we will be urged to be officially DONE with that way of living!
There is a saving grace, though. A path that’s unconsidered here. One that perhaps has gone mostly overlooked as we try so hard to pander and do what is expected of us. Or what we think is expected of us. And that is simply this: by pursuing our ambitions, our passions, and our truest dreams or ideals…we are upholding our obligations, commitments, and duties to our ancestral roots. We are becoming, with duty to what’s real, that which we were born on this Earth to be. And by doing that, we are honoring, and upholding the traditions of the biggest family we belong to; that of the Earth and humanity as a whole.
It’s only when we choose to pursue that which is genuine to our spirits that we’ll receive the genuine love and appreciation we crave from others. Anything else than that only merits fake appreciation and fake love for upholding a set of standards we aren’t even about. Isn’t that more stress than it’s worth? Isn’t that more time than it’s worth? Deep down inside, I think we all wanna be loved for who we really are, and do what we really believe in.
Humanity is honored every time we dare to use the small amount of time we have to live in chasing our true purpose. Like the movie Moana where the main heroine saves her tribe in the end by rejecting her family’s rules and stigmas to follow the call of the horizon inside her heart. We are being called to do great things with our lives. Real things. True things that are close to our hearts. Even if that calling starts off as a whisper, as a single spark, as not knowing where to even begin and stumbling haplessly around. Look at how babies start off. I bet they don’t originally know that their legs are meant for walking at first. And then suddenly, one foot gets put in front of the other, and suddenly they’re running! Trust in following your biggest passions to lead you to where you need to go…just like babies do. December 31st, 2018 is our opportunity to take 2019 by storm in making our initial steps. And before we know it, before no time at all, we’ll be learning how to run in stride!
I’ve drawn a Tarot card to help guide us when December 31st hits us, that New Years ball drops, and 2019 begins. The card I drew was the Eight of Staves (reversed). This card speaks of waiting too long on communications that aren’t coming and that NOW is the time to act. Remember, like I said earlier, the only time we really have to use is the present. The past is gone. The future, while speculated on endlessly, is a mystery. And we create that future in every breath we take.
Well? What are you waiting around for reading this post?! Put the phone away and do something fucking awesome in the world! Your destiny is now!

*Below are some extra details about the astrological weather on December 31st, 2018 and an included visual chart for learning purposes!
Heightened intuition and insight: The moon in Scorpio is infamous for it’s sharp eye and keen awareness into what makes our psychology tick. New Years Eve will bring about an increased awareness of not only our own inner mechanics, but that of others around us. Pay attention! If you ever wanted the truth about someone’s true intentions, now is the perfect time for a truth spell. You might just learn a thing or two about what drives and motivates another’s actions. Especially if they’re trying to keep those motivations hidden.
Primal instincts: Mars in Aries has a tendency to put our fight and flight mode into overdrive. We might feel like we have to act rashly or jump at the first perceived signs of something going afoul. If you feel extra on edge like there’s a gun at your back, take a deep breath, and try to rationalize the reasons why before you take that leap of faith. On the other hand, because our instincts are super piqued on December 31st, it might be the perfect time to actually listen to what our gut has to say! Our gut might be smarter than our brains in this case. Those of you Otherkin, lycanthropes, and magicians who rely on primal magic will get an extra boost of power on this day.
Rose-colored glasses and self-medication: Jupiter square Neptune in Pisces is the culprit here. Along with this fiery energy of “go grab your destiny” follows delusion in it’s wake. Jupiter square Neptune is challenging. When it shows up in any astrological chart, it indicates a test of your faith from the Universe. Are you really going to chase your dreams and make them true? Even after the first signs of disappointment? Don’t get frustrated. Things won’t come together overnight but using December 31st as your first burst of energy forward will prove beneficial if you make that movement intentional rather than thoughtless. This is also an aspect that can bring up escapism in love, drug use, alcohol, or any sort of vice that has us ignoring reality and the pursuit of our purpose in lieu of pursuing an idealized dream world.
Be a friend to others: Despite the austerity usually associated with the Sun in Capricorn, one of the good things about it is what a solid friend it is to others. Particularly during times of great duress and tears. Sun in Capricorn gives grounded advice, comfort in the form of food, and shelter. And can be a shoulder to cry on. December 31st, with Chiron influencing Mars, can bring out a lot of frustration and hurt feelings from others. Specifically involving our childhood traumas and moving beyond them. If a friend comes to you for help or a listening ear that day, offer them your couch, or your guest bed for the night. It is New Years Eve after all…so keep your friends from driving home drunk and emotional. Give them the couch. It could just save a life.
Transformational devotion and synchronicity: Uranus square the North Node, while super iconoclastic and disruptive, can also be a benefit to us. This aspect has the Universe throwing down all sorts of serendipitous synchronicity at us in order to breadcrumb the path of where we need to direct ourselves. Keep your eyes open for any kind of sign or omen that seems to leap out at you. Venus sextile Pluto are teaming up to help Mars in acting on your deeper purpose. There’s nothing superficial about Venus and Pluto when they’re holding hands. You’ll be more driven towards living a life that really fulfills you. Not one where you’re barely scraping by emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually.
Secrets and Scandals: Venus sextile Pluto has a tendency to keep and maintain secrets, the Moon in Scorpio has the ability to see the truth at the roots of any given matter, and Chiron conjunct with Mars is bringing up childhood/identity trauma and fears in order to be resolved. We might be on the receiving end of some rather interesting drunk confessions this New Years Eve.
