Warren pauses, as if in thought, internally debating letting her go by. He closes his book, but keeps a thumb tucked between the pages to act as a bookmark. He’s almost certain there’s a charm that will do it for him, but, there’s no harm in doing it the old fashioned way. After a second to assess the newcomer, he decides she’s clearly no threat, and she is, in fact, a Hufflepuff. Is house loyalty even a thing when your entire house is loyalty? … And finding things, but, whatever.
“Hm.” He first looks down the hall - nobody’s there - then down the staircase - also nobody - and shrugs.
“Sure, I guess.” He pulls his legs in to make space for her, but stops halfway through. There’s something about her that’s really, really familiar… And he’s pretty sure he remembers why.
“Are you the one who filled the entire common room with flowers, yesterday?”
As he talks, she notices something - wow, he has a really deep voice for a teenager. She’s seen him around before, sure, but she doesn’t believe she has ever heard him speak. If she did, it was too crowded for her to pay attention. But here, in the emptiness of the staircase, his voice booms off the walls. Odd thing to notice. She knows. His question makes her grin sheepishly - she can linger there a minute, can’t she? She finds herself leaning against the windowsill behind her - the window in the staircase gives a narrow view of the sky outside, but Layla’s attention is on the other student. She nods.
“Yep. That’s me. Our common room is nice, don’t get me wrong, but nobody takes care of the plants properly, so -- it’s... Warren. Right?” She’s aware of the lack of transition, but it’s distracting to talk to someone without knowing their name. She thinks she knows his - because she’s heard that name before, in more or less pleasant discussions, but it’s always better to be polite.
roastyoualive:
Warren Peace, the unexpected Hufflepuff, was having trouble believing Hogwarts was an actual school. You would think, that if it were, there would be more places to study. He’d tried the common rooms, but those were too noisy; He didn’t have a private dorm, so he couldn’t read in bed; The libraries had been overrun with Ravenclaws; Most halls were filled with moving stairs and talkative portraits; and Merlin only knew what the Gryffindors were up to in the courtyard. He had thought, briefly, about going to the dungeons, where almost nobody went, but that’s where the Slytherins were. Warren wasn’t afraid of them, but he wasn’t stupid enough to go looking for fights, either.
For the past five minutes, the tower he’d stumbled upon had seemed perfect. Then, he found himself being almost stepped on. He slowly peels his gaze off of History Of The Great Wizarding War, By Gabriel Grouse, and looks up at the offender.
“I could. Depends who’s asking, though.”
As soon as the obstacle looks up, Layla's expression shifts in recognition - oh yes, she knows him. That’s a face that’s hard to forget. His expression leads her to believe he doesn’t know who she is, though. Her eyes drop as she automatically tries to catch a glimpse of what he’s reading - natural curiosity, can’t be helped - before she tugs at her tie to adjust it.
“Layla. Layla Williams”, she answers. “We’re in the same house, actually.” She lifts up her yellow and black tie: it matches his. “Does that grant me safe passage on the stairs ?”

Rohini closed the mirror and looked to her right. “Naw, sugar, you’re all right. Both of my friends ain’t in today, it seems. And my other friends are all in the Hero classes so there’s that.” A pause. “I’m Rohini. You’re…you’re Layla, right?”
Truth be told, Layla’s friends were kinda intimidating. (Okay, so maybe it only applied to Magenta. Whatever.) And Rohini would rather stick with her own group. Besides, what if Warren Peace had a bad day and decided to burn her to a crisp or something?
“D’you know where Mr. Boy is? It’s quite unlike him to be late, isn’t it?”
She would’ve plopped in some earbuds and listened to Birdy until Mr. Boy came in but she forgot her iPod back home. Only when they were halfway across did she figure out that something was missing.
“I like your earrings - they look pretty cute,” She added. “Where’d you get ‘em?”
Layla nodded cheerfully, grinning at her new neighbor. She liked talking to new people, although she preferred the company of her friends. But sometimes, it was fun to expand your horizons (and besides, if Will could make new friends, she could too.)
"Yep. And wow, Rohini’s a really pretty name!”
At Rohini’s question, Layla glanced towards the front of the class, noticing the continued absence of the teacher. She wrinkled her nose, shrugging: “Yeah. I hope he’s okay. He’s usually the first in class, right ? And oh...”
Layla’s hand immediately went to her ear at Rohini’s compliment -she beamed, her smile growing. That girl was really nice ! “Thanks ! And mmm, let me think... some artisanal shop, I think? I can’t exactly remember...” Layla propped her chin on her hands, leaning her elbows on the table: “I was certain I was going to be late. I ran all the way across campus for nothing, apparently...”

roastyoualive Up, up the stairs Layla Williams goes. A striped, yellow and black tie sways, loose around her neck as she takes the stairs two at a time, her pigtails swinging behind her as she goes. She’s going up to the astronomy tower - yes, it’s almost curfew, hence the running, but she’s pretty sure that’s where she left one of her books, and now that it’s not in her backpack, she really misses it. What’s a girl to do without her copy of Goshawk's Guide to Herbology ?
She’s in such a hurry that she almost trips over something - someone? Layla steps back, blinking, noticing the student sitting on the stairs, blocking her way towards her destination - and she’s almost there, too. She clears her throat at the unmoving form, and says: “Um. Hi. Could you... move?”

“Now, come on. Give us a smile. S M I L E. It’s good for the face muscles…”She’s making things up - she thinks - but Warren is being expectionnally grumpy. She’s used to that, of course, but it’s a beautiful day! Sun is shining, birds are chirping, she passed all of her classes, summer is almost here…And yet, Mr. Warren Peace refuses to skip around and open his arms wide to the gloriousness of life. Well, this isn’t going to fly. “Come on!” she insists, linking her arm with his, ignoring the little dimissive grunts he gives. He doesn’t mean it, she knows that. “Do I have to pinch your cheeks?”
He glares. Oh, if looks could kill.
Then, after a long, overly dramatic sigh, he gives her the fakest, most sarcastic grin ever. “Happy?” he snaps, returning to his earlier glare in seconds. “… Y e p.”Letting go of his arm, she spontaneously plants a big kiss on his cheek, already anticipating his look of disgust, before she declares:“… It’s a beautiful day.”

"Oh..." Eyes widen slightly as the redhead bites her lip, an apologetic expression on her face. “I don’t...” Wow. She desperately wishes sign language was among her set of skills, but it’s not, so she has to resort to confusion and apologies.
“I’m really sorry”, she says. “I don’t - oh, I must have a pen somewhere - maybe you could write?” She fumbles with her messenger bag, but it’s kind of a mess in there.

i agree 100%
Layla could be a Gryff or a Huff, def. I also see a bit of Ravenclaw in her, too, tbh. … But the whole ‘let’s use Warren to make Will jealous’ is distinctly snake
Maybe Huff because she refused to leave her friends to join the hero track even though she easily could have?))
yeah, Huff is my best guess. And yeah, her ploy was a bit Slytherin but omg, it was such a poorly conceived plan and she totally made that stuff up on the spot so yeah, hum. P. sure Slytherin is out. (although she does look good in green...)
