To lower the risk of heat stroke (and associated illnesses):

Do not leave pets unattended in cars during hot weather. No, opening a window to let air in will not remove the threat of heat stroke.

Ensure that pets have access to cool, fresh water at all times.

Multiple sources of water are ideal, given the risk that one may be knocked over or contaminated.

Add ice cubes to water to ensure long-lasting coolness.

Ensure that your pets have a shaded area to escape to.

If the animal is amiable, soaking with a hose can help lower body temperature.

When exercising your pet, avoid giving them water directly before, during, or after exercise. This is to prevent the risk of gastric torsion.  

Do not over exert your pet during hot weather.

Keep animals inside in air-conditioned areas.

Use a species appropriate sun-block to prevent sun burns.

With smaller animals, put a shade cloth over the cage to lower temperature.
