attention people who use runes (esp. the elder fuþark):
if you work with or have done research on the Elder Fuþark runes, you may have noticed that there are lots of variations on the names. & i mean LOTS, e.g.:
there are a couple of reasons for this:
HOWEVER, most actual runic inscriptions in the Elder Fuþark are actually in Proto-Norse, the intermediate stage between Proto-Indo-European and Old Norse. A lot of the discrepancies between the attested names & their names in other Germanic languages (i.e. Gothic and Old English) is due to this fact (Orðstírr has a good intro to Proto-Norse sounds especially re: runes)
modern English is missing many of the sounds and letters that existed in early Germanic languages, so variant spellings are different ways of rendering them in our limited 26-letter alphabet
many sources on runes come from magickal writings from many decades ago, and because language science is constantly evolving, so has our reconstruction of Proto-Germanic. thus, many of the names are based on outdated reconstructions.
most magickal writings on runes are not written by historical linguists who study ancient Germanic languages
luckily i regularly study & use Proto-Germanic, & based on our most recent & accurate reconstructions, the names for the Elder Fuþark would have probably taken the following forms (text in /slashes/ is IPA phonemic transcription; where names are different, this is due to differring names in the different attested langauges, or variation within Proto-Germanic dialects):
ᚠ *fehu /ɸexu/ “wealth, cattle”
ᚢ *ūruz /uːruz/ “aurochs”
ᚦ *þurisaz /θurisɑz/ “giant, monster” OR *þurnuz /θurnuz/ “thorn”
ᚨ *ansuz /ɑnsuz/ “deity, mouth”
ᚱ *raidō /rɑi̯ðɔː/ “journey”
ᚲ *kēnaz /keːnɑz/ “torch” OR *kauną /kɑu̯nɑ̃/ “ulcer”
ᚷ *gebō /ɣeβɔː/ “gift”
ᚹ *wunjō /wunjɔː/ “joy”
ᚺ *haglaz /xɑɣlɑz/ “hail(storm)”
ᚾ *naudiz /nɑu̯ðiz/ “need, distress, force”
ᛁ *īsaz /iːsɑz/ “ice”
ᛃ *jērą /jɛːrɑ̃/ “year”
ᛇ *ēhaz /eːxɑz/ < *īhwaz /iːxʷɑz/ OR *īwaz /iːwɑz/ “yew”
ᛈ *perþō /perθɔː/ “?pear-tree, ??game-box (uncertain)”
ᛉ *elhaz /elxɑz/ OR *algiz /ɑlɣiz/ “elk”
ᛊ *sōwulą /sɔːwulɑ̃/ OR *sōwilą /sɔːwilɑ̃/ “sun”
ᛏ *tīwaz /tiːwɑz/ “the god *Tīwaz (Norse Týr, Anglo-Saxon Tíw > Tue[sday])”
ᛒ *berkaną /berkɑnɑ̃/ “birch”
ᛖ *ehwaz /exʷɑz/ “horse”
ᛗ *mannaz /mɑnnɑz/ “human, person”
ᛚ *laguz /lɑɣuz/ “water, sea, ocean”
ᛜ *ingwaz /iŋʷgʷɑz/ “the god *Frawjaz (Norse Freyr, Anglo-Saxon Fréa)”
ᛞ *dagaz /dɑɣɑz/ “day”
ᛟ *ōþalą /ɔːθɑlɑ̃/ OR *ōþilą /ɔːθilɑ̃/ “ancestral home”
if you would like more in-depth explanations for each of these, HERE is a good source (where we differ, i’d note that this source leans heavily on the Norse variants because our oldest attested uses come from Proto-Norse)
The Elements and their correspondences
E A R T H
Earth represents strength, grounding, prosperity, the material, wealth, success, foundations, death and rebirth. Focus on this element if the goal of your spell is about fertility, prosperity, business or stability. Earth spells may take longer to work, but they’re also more firm and are good if you’re looking for long-term solutions.
GENDER: Feminine SEASON: Winter DIRECTION: North HOUR: Night

A I R
Air represents intellect and the mind, wisdom, knowledge; logic as well as abstract thought, intuition and higher consciousness. If you’re seeking freedom, travels, or to enhance your memory and focus - focus on Air spells! Air is whimsical and amiable, personally I haven’t found it useful for more serious spells, but it does wonders for my studies.
GENDER: Masculine SEASON: Spring DIRECTION: East HOUR: Dawn
COLOURS: Yellow, White, Sky Blue, Pastels ANIMALS: Birds, Spiders, Butterflies HERBS/PLANTS: Lavender, Birch, Vervain, Dill, Aspen INSTRUMENTS: Flute (Wind instruments)
STAR SIGNS: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius STONES/GEMS: Amethyst, Opal, Alexandrite, Beryl RITUAL TOOLS: Incense, Wand RITUAL FORMS: Fanning, Tossing into air, Suspending in a high place TAROT SUIT: Swords
F I R E
Fire represents energy, passion, purification, love, inspiration, desire, will, courage, power, leadership, sexuality. In spellcraft, focusing on Fire is good for purification, healing and love spells; it’s the best element for quick, strong spells. Although, Fire is fierce in essence, and Fire spells are susceptible - they should be well thought out.
GENDER: Masculine SEASON: Summer DIRECTION: South HOUR: Noon
COLOURS: Red, Orange, Gold ANIMALS: Snakes, Lions, Horses HERBS/PLANTS: Cacti, Cinnamon, Pepper, Basil INSTRUMENTS: Guitar (Stringed instruments)
STAR SIGNS: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius STONES/GEMS: Amber, Citrine, Ruby, Tiger’s Eye RITUAL TOOLS: Athame, Candles RITUAL FORMS: Burning, Smouldering, Heating TAROT SUIT: Wands
W A T E R
Water represents purification as well; though it’s focused more on the soul and the subconscious rather than the physical, material world. Water stands for emotion, intuition, wisdom, eternal movement, reflection, lunar energy. Focusing on the Water element is good for psychic abilities, getting in tune with your inner self, mysteries, friendships, love, dreams and sleep.
GENDER: Feminine SEASON: Autumn DIRECTION: West HOUR: Dusk
COLOURS: Blue, Indigo, Silver ANIMALS: Otters, Fish, Sea Mammals, Frogs HERBS/PLANTS: Lotus, Water Lilies, Aloe, Gardenia INSTRUMENTS: Cymbal, Bell (Resonant instruments)

Feeling ‘crafty today!
I came home sick today (for the second time in two weeks, which sucks) so to make myself feel better I wanted to make something.

Shiroinightmare’s Writer/Artist Spell Bottle
Hey everyone, so I’ve been having a bit of trouble starting a new book for the last month or so after finishing writing my third novel. I decided to compile a spell bottle/jar to bring energy, motivation, passion, creativity, and all that.
Here’s what I have in it as well as the correspondences, from the bottom up.
coffee - energy
sage - passion, prosperity
cinnamon - energy, success, love
sugar - sweetness
salt - protection
citrine - creativity, optimism, positivity, happiness, success
amethyst - creativity, peace
rose quartz - love, energy
Then I tied it with a red ribbon and added a citrine. Hope this helps!
Tarot Tips
🃏 Find The Empress in your deck. The card behind her will reveal what you need to do to nurture and care for yourself.
🃏 When in conflict or competition with someone, look for 5 of Wands. The card behind it will reveal the solution to the problem.
🃏 If you see the same card over and over again in readings, it is a sign and you must pay attention to its message for you.
🃏 For a better understanding of each card, observe it closely and form your own interpretation that follows its themes. It will help you interpret readings better.
🃏 To find out what is making you feel stuck or delayed, look to The Hanged Man. The card underneath him will show what is holding you back. The card in front of him will show you how to overcome it.
🃏 When shuffling your cards, if any card drops out of your grasp, take it as a sign and read the card.
🃏 You do not need crystals with you to do proper readings, but a good way to cleanse your deck is to place a clear quartz on the top of your deck before each reading. Keep in mind; there’s a variety of ways you can cleanse your deck.
🃏 Often when The High Priestess appears in a reading, she is trying to tell you that you know the answers and that you should listen to your inner voice.
🃏 There is no wrong way to shuffle or cleanse your deck. Do what feels right for you!

stick a pencil behind your ear — pencils are usually made of cedar wood (juniperus virginiana) which is said to carry spiritual and visionary energies, but can also help with self-mastery; pencil can be enchanted!
moon phases + zodiac signs — use new moon water for starting new painting projects and full moon water for finishing them; use the zodiac of the current moon for your creativity (fire sign: creative and passionate energy; water sign: emotional expression; air sign: planning and mental work; earth sign: hand-made material items like arts and crafts);
planetary rulers of creative days — monday is ruled by the moon (emotions, inspiration); wednesday is ruled by mercury (expression, communication); friday is ruled by venus (love, beauty, art) sunday is ruled by the sun (personality, creativity, expression of self);
surround yourself with crystals — yellow fluorite, carnelian, chrysoberyl, citrine, orange calcite, tangerine quartz, mookaite jasper, fire agate, tiger’s eye, garnet, bloodstone, rhodochrosite, moonstone, pink kunzite, amethyst, ametrine, (herkimer) diamonds, chrysoprase, blue apatite, blue chalcedony, blue fluorite, blue kyanite, lapis lazuli, celestite, blue lace agate, larimar, azurite, opal; …
create your own color meanings — there are traditional and common meanings for colors but it also really helps to think about the colors and feel into the colors yourself. what do you associate with each color and what do different color combinations make you feel? then pin down which color makes you creative and surround yourself with it;
ask the Archangels for help — Archangel Gabriel can help with creativity and dissolving fear; Archangel Jophiel can help with wisdom and communication; Archangel Raphael helps with intuition and creative visualization, also brings healing and harmony; Archangel Haniel can help with expression of self and soul, also helps us to expand our spiritual horizon and therefore our art;
use essential oils while working — tangerine for joy and creativity; lavender for relaxation; clary sage for clarity and vision; jasmine for optimism and confidence; frankincense to calm; rosemary for mental clarity; eucalyptus for enthusiasm and creativity; peppermint for concentration; …

Shopping: some days = oh!! that’s witchy! and that’s witchy! buy all the witchy things! most days = I like bright colors!! That looks a little too goth… that would make my look like a street walker…or a witch… wait I am a witch. Do I have to DRESS like a witch? hmmm No.
At home: Watching netflix… hmm it smells a little weird in here… *grabs sage* Maybe I should cleanse the energy while I’m at it… “Negative ENERGY FUCK OFF!” Witchcraft.

How to Conduct a Spell
The Advance Work
- Decide on your spell. If you’re writing your own, do it well before the day of execution in case you decide to change it after thinking about it for a day or two.
- Check to make sure you have all the tools or enhancements available. You do not want to run to a store an hour before you conduct a ritual. You should be as relaxed as possible the day of your ceremony.
- Locate the area in which you will be casting your formation (magic circle) in advance.
- Choose your clothing and make sure it is clean and ready to wear.
- Clear your schedule so you are not rushed.
- If your spell is to be conducted at home, clean it so you wont be nervous or concerned about chores later.
Spell Day: The Basic Order
1. Shut off all telephones and anything that will distract you.
2. Put pets that will disrupt you in another room.
3. Take children to the babysitters if you have made that previous arraignment, or ask household members not to disturb you for the amount of time you think it will take. Allow a minimum of a half an hour.
4. Take a shower or bath.
5. Take your tools and enhancements and go to your spell area. Make sure you have your spell.
6. If you’re using music, you may want to start playing it while you are getting things together.
7. Move furniture around to give yourself the space you require.
8. Place all your tools within the space you will be using.
9. Cast your circle and place your candles and gems in your space.
10. Relax and visualize your body being protected by a bright white light. See it flowing from your toes up to the top of your head. Not only does the circle protect you, but the white light is also a shield of additional protection from negative influences.
11. Sit, and when you feel it appropriate, recite your spell. You may want to listen to the music for a while before actually reciting the spell, or you may want to sit in silence to prepare.
12. Once you have completed your spell, sit for as long as you feel is comfortable. Extinguish all candles and open up your circle, release it, and leave immediately.
13. Remove all enhancements and put things back in order.
