Sua's Mischaracterisation; How YOUR Misogyny is Visible Through Your Interpretation
Analysing Sua and her behaviour, and comparing it to her fandom interpretation of being "mean"
Sua is repeatedly put in uncomfortable dialogue by the people around her whether they intend to hurt her or otherwise. We have literally never seen her counter this in a mean way with anyone except for Mizi, who she trusts. Her most common response is to placate the other party or escape the situation.
TL1 TL2
Even in the interaction with Mizi where she upsets her, she's remarkably quick to placate her. She doesn't hesitate for a second before saying what she knows to be her lines: "It's fine."
TL3
Now that we've seen that the "mean" interpretation of Sua isn't true, where does it come from?
Tropedia describes the Mean Lesbian as "[a lesbian that] can sometimes have a softer demeanor, usually around a romantic partner. Often, they begin as an antagonist or bully of the protagonist. She is often assumed to hate the men around her, and is very competitive. Her sarcastic remarks can cut deep, but she can treat them like a joke."
I think that the majority of the fanon perception of Sua being mean is informed by this mindset. By virtue of her few interactions with Till where she plays an innocent prank on him, and her few interactions with Ivan in which she shows dislike for him, she is cast as a man-hater in contrast to Mizi who is seen to be friendly with Till and Ivan. Arguably, this mischaracterises Mizi as well, considering her man-hating streak of finding heterosexuality gross in her words (based).
TL4
I will be honest, I don't like this comic. It mischaracterisas Sua in order to prop Ivan up by showing her being "sinister" and then showing Ivan being More sinister, just to make what he's doing look funnier. It also plays into the Mean Lesbian, which is not something we ever see from Sua again. "The Mean Lesbian often has a girlfriend who is [] more upbeat and bubbly [than her] to show the dynamic between them. Her girlfriend may have a larger role than her."
I don't find this to be a terrible error, seeing as this *is* Till's birthday comic. It isn't about her. Errors are frequent in alnst, characters do show inconsistencies from time to time, it's fine. But seeing how the fandom took this comic and ran with it is frustrating!
What's more frustrating is the way people read Sua's interactions with Ivan and somehow come to the conclusion that she is in the wrong for not liking being teased, touched in ways she's clearly uncomfortable with, or told directly to her face that she is selfishly traumatising her lover.
Non-trasnlated1 TL5
I really don't know how people look at these panels and think Sua is mean. Like I can't even see it through their perspective at that point. So I'll just put the comics here, and note down the fact that Ivan himself recognises that he was mean to her for no reason in this interaction.
The visual storytelling around Ivan-Sua is so stark and it's in all of their interactions. He's always portrayed to look down at her, cast shadow over her, manhandle her etc. He intimidates her. There's nothing kind about the way these interactions are framed.
TL2
The common ways with which this mean interpretation of Sua comes up in the fandom is what I call the "homophobic homosexual". She will usually be seen in fanfics expressing being grossed out by Ivan and Till doing anything remotely romantic. A common way this joke is done is having her express these thoughts while holding Mizi in some way to paint her as a hypocrite for criticising homosexuality and PDA whilst doing the same things (or more extreme things) with Mizi. I don't want to list particular examples of fanwork for this, as that's what we call bullying, but I'm sure you've seen examples of it, especially if you read ivantill fics.
zomst has been out for a single set of 24 hours and people are back on their "Sua is mean and hates Ivan & Till" bullshit again
I hate it here I truly do
omgggg fizzy drawing vision after chibis again.... who saw that coming...
Jockemo Ivantill 💖
Thanks @naruysae for helping me with this and doing the rendering cause I suck at this lol
is this my first alnst post on here?
My boy is back with his cute stupid faces 🥹😭
So, I started to write a new Ivantill fic, it's a jockemo + college AU, I posted it yesterday on AO3:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/86184551/chapters/227925571
Rating: T
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Pairing: Ivan/Till
Status: 1/? chapters (ongoing)
Summary:
“You need to help me get over him,” Till shook his head, “erase those feelings, whatever.” Mizi and Sua exchanged a look only they understood —call it the power of love. “I don't think that's what you need, Till,” Sua stated matter-of-factly. “Then what?” “You need to flirt with Ivan, test the waters and see if he feels the same about you!” Mizi clapped as if to emphasize the genius idea she'd just had. “Flirt?” Till choked out. He was already in unknown territory. He’d seen what flirting looked like in rom-coms or whatever, but there was no fucking way it could be applied to real-life practice.
Or: Till catches feelings for Ivan, and Mizi and Sua are on a mission to teach him the art of flirting.
Alien Stage fans will look you dead in the eyes and say "this scene doesn't have sexual assault overtones because SA is wrong, which as we all know, wrong means that it cannot be depicted"
meanwhile the character is sensually posed (not even including that one other frame of Till here) in warm saturated lighting with their clothing askew and eyes lidded and covered in sweat and LOOKING LIKE A STRIPPER WITH MONEY THROWN AT HIM
This reddit post haunts me because I keep comic across it (I look at this art a lot, sue me) and this person sounds like they are... not aware that Ivan is a. drawing. You don't have to draw realistic clothing unless you Want To and are trying to show something. Also why the hell would he be sprawled out over a couch for a random totally kid friendly modeling gig. Why would he then go find Till completely disheveled and not react at all if he didn't know what was going on.
writing 15 pages for my thesis in weeks vs literally writing dozens of pages for my alien stage fics in probably the same amount of time... free me from this life.
one of my many zalnst questions is why the hell do they hate Luka in this universe?
when his happy ass strolled into the film appreciation club room the air went subzero freaking Ivan hit his chips behind him and Hyuna looked pissed the fuck off
girl, there’s no way he killed your brother in this world too. Did He danced too hard or something.
nothing like celebrating pride month with doomed zombies
I wonder why Ivan hid the snacks from Luka as soon as he came in lmao
Also idk if this is just me, but did Sua change seats to avoid sitting close to Luka or am I misreading stuff?
Hmm I also assume Ivan was the one who made Luka come when he initially wasn't supposed to (Ivan thinking "he actually came~" and Hyuna telling Luka "Didn't you say you couldn't come?" right after 😭) hmmm
he doesn't even care it's so funny
on zombie stage (prelim thoughts)
i JUST woke up holy shit. funnily enough right before i became fully conscious i had the thought like, "i feel like i'm going to open twt and see all my moots freaking out" which, CRAZY premonition to have
wait addendum: it's like obvious (?) in hindsight now the amount of foreshadowing there is but like, at the time i don't think ANY of us could have predicted that mizi's sub songs would also be foreshadowing this au. like holy shit there is SO MUCH happening rn and im so!! i'm so excited for more alnst
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH btw i have so much to say about the teaser and the comic but the one thing i cant stop thinking about is that certain people seem to be sweating/overheating(…?) in the comic.
Like in these frames, mizi, till and luka are all sweating…(same as the ones who were alive at the end of alnst??) but for till, it might just be a reaction to Ivan so im not sure
But in these next frames, it’s much more explicit. Mizi and luka have hair sticking to their faces, and mizi outright says “it’s so hot” and this feels subtle but out of place enough where i think it’s intentional
Are they infected with the zombie virus or something??
hes stronger than me I would not be able to focus on a word she's saying. whatever you say beautiful.
I'm sorry I might be a bit stupid but why does Sua lwk look pissed in there when she was blushing seconds ago :') not really sure
