10 cool rocks you probably didn’t know about
1) lepidolite
lepidolite is a variety of mica and is typically pink or lavender colored. when tumbled it is extremely glittery – pictures don’t do it justice!
2) ulexite
ulexite is also called “tv rock” and has a super unique optical effect – when placed over something it displays that image onto the top of the rock. it’s not merely opaque – the fibers within the mineral literally project an image onto the surface of the stone.
3) pietersite
pietersite has chatoyancy – much like tiger’s eye – that creates movement and shine through the surface of the stone. however, unlike tiger’s eye, pietersite’s chatoyancy is in swirls instead of straight lines. it’s incredible to behold – i recommend looking up pietersite on youtube and checking out videos of it under good lighting.
4) optical calcite/iceland spar
this type of calcite is actually completely clear, but refracts the light going through it in ways that create rainbows and other neat optical effects. isaac newton himself actually studied this rock to help better understand the nature of light itself & the phenomenon of optical illusions.
5) alexandrite
alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl that exhibits a color change! it changes from a greenish hue to a brilliant red depending on the type of light and the source. the color changes in alexandrite are phenomenal and rarely seen in other stones.
6) spectrolite
don’t let the image fool you – this stone is actually pure black. the brilliant colors it exhibits are just a flash (it’s actually called labradorescence, which is what the stone labradorite is named for). spectrolite is an uncommon form of labradorite mined only from finland. some varieties of high quality labradorite from madagascar can show a spectrolite play, but nothing is as dark with as brilliant a flash as spectrolite.
7) specular hematite
specular hematite is a variety of hematite that has a beautiful, glimmering surface especially when polished. much like lepidolite, the shimmer of specular hematite is caused by mica.
8) boulder opal
boulder opal is ironstone with cracks of brilliant natural opal running through it. these formations are entirely natural. opal has the most brilliant and vibrantly colored flash of any other stone.
9) enhydro quartz
enhydro quartz is a variety of quartz that was formed with naturally occuring water & air bubbles within them! in some specimens the water bubbles will actually move underneath the surface of the crystal.
10) fire agate
fire agate is actually a form of chalcedony, and is well known for having a beautiful rainbow effect caused by schiller, rather than flash or labradorescence.
A website for Home buying, like Zillow or Trulia, only with realism. It doesn’t focus on the superb features of a 935 sq ft with 3 bedrooms somehow crammed into it. It doesn’t try to convince you that everybody wants this house that’s been foreclosed on since 1998.
This website offers the usual price point and size and bedrooms for selections to focus on. It also offers “deal-breaker” and “can live with it” options for what you want in a home. All quirks - cool ones and bizarre ones - are included in the listings.
Additional useful features include searching by a map, and searches that exclude terrible locations. It offers you the option to circle the area you want to live in. That same map, you can click things like living next to the highway or remove the option to buy a spire house in the middle of a Tanger Outlet.
Friend Hook Up
In this age of the unsolicited dick pic and the stalker-chick-I-swiped-by-accident, in a time when beautiful people are dating evil trash because they think they can’t do better, in a world where busy people are too busy to meet the folks standing next to them in the elevator, I give you the perfect solution:
Yet another dating site.
This is not the classic where you fill out your character’s entire backstory and throw down 150 bucks to meet your soulmate - or a reasonable facsimile thereof. Nor is it the hit-or-hell left-right ultra modern phone app.
Who knows you best? Not you - you think your nose is too big. You think that shirt looks good on you. Who has the most interest in getting you with the right person? Not you - no one has the heart to ask you to be DD, too, and when you don’t want to adult, you just “volunteer” to “babysit”.
Your friends are the cure for the modern dating app - no one’s gonna send a chick who might be your baby sister a dick pic. They’re the easy fix for the classic - they can answer all those questions HONESTLY, and they don’t want your first born son in exchange... unless he’s neater than theirs, then a trade might be... never mind.
So, here’s what you need to build - a basic dating site with the usual 25-50 questions, only from the friend point of view. Include extra questions for friends that even the person described can’t see the answer to (Does this person eat enough garlic to ward off the entire Twilight fandom? Is she secretly hella gay and won’t admit it so we should “accidentally” pick a bi-girl with a gender-obscure name? Has the “love of his life” friend-zoned him and he’s mildly to extremely dumb-bitter about it?) Also a couple screening questions to make sure the friends aren’t lunatics (Are you trying to set your brother-in-law up so your sister can catch him cheating? Does hot=gay?)
Your friends will meet THEIR friends for coffee. They talk. IF they both decide you two might work and there’s no red flags, they set you up.
This would be an ad-based service. However, I’d suggest an option to arrange meet-cutes for a fee if it’s that sort of thing.
First Post
So, I have ideas, all day, every day. Some are terrible ideas, some are funny ideas. Some are plot bunnies... okay, a grim awful lot of them are plot bunnies.
Then there’s this. I’m a genius. It’s not special, it’s not some amazing gift or a valuable talent; at this point, I mostly find it frustrating. Because anything that annoys me, anything that inconveniences me, anything that I notice bothering someone else, is liable to take up space in my head wandering around until my brain comes to a conclusion... or more to the point, a solution.
They’re all marketable ideas. Some will require patents, some research, some just the right fascinated R&D department. Some will require measurements, construction, programming. Some of them are even readily produced, a thing you can put together in your spare time if you have any, which I don’t.
So, here’s the deal. I can’t horde these things and I sure as crap can’t sell them, since they’re just thoughts. So, I’m just going to set them free. That’s this blog, that’s what it’s for. A place to put all of my random ideas and inventions.
Help yourself to them. If you use an idea and your company goes for it, let me know where I can buy one coz I need it: that’s why I had the idea in the first place. If - and only if - you’d like to contribute to my nieces and nephew’s college fund, hit me up and I’ll send you a Pay Pal link. If you don’t, take it in good faith - it’s all karmic, so I’m not bothered. I’ll make the world a little better with your help.
And if you’re someone who is frustrated with something, and you know there’s gotta be a solution to the frustration somewhere, unless it’s the US Federal Government, send me an Ask and I’ll see what I can do.
(I actually have a solution to the government, too, but if Thomas Edison taught me anything, it’s that the Government doesn’t LIKE solutions.)
I’ll try to post something every couple days, and may reblog old stuff if I come up with new angles - or if it just annoys me again tomorrow.
