As much as he wanted to counter, she made a good point about his mother. He loved the woman dearly, but god she could be a fucking nightmare. As she walked past him, he finally replied. “That’s not what I said, is it? I’m just… There’s more reason if you’re yelling at me where they can take pictures with the fucking smartphones they can barely use.” He took a heavy breath, shutting the door behind them as he threw his keys into the bowl on the table. His voice was low, not argumentative, just tired and pissed off. The worst part was, Dom had really brought this on himself. Not mentioning to Diana anything about his ex-wife catching up with him was a mistake. the encounter had only reminded him why they had never worked. To his girlfriend, that probably didn’t play out the same way. Sighing, he winced as she spoke and then narrowed his eyes. “What? Are you fucking serious, Di? You think one catch up with my ex is enough to convince me this isn’t worth all the constant shit? You really think that?” He moved closer to her, holding his hands up. “Because I sure as hell don’t. She’d the goddamn mother of my kid, if we don’t get along, it creates problems… Mostly for me.” He explained, rubbing the back of his neck as he lowered his voice. “I wasn’t going to keep it from you. It just didn’t come up.” Talking himself into a corner as per usual. “Plus I assumed you’d blow it the hell out of proportion, like you are right now.” Taking another hesitant few steps closer to her. His expression was hardly gentle and sweet, but he was trying to appeal to the side of her that didn’t want to slap him. “What do you want me to do, tell you every time I see her?”
Diana had long stopped listening to reason. Instead his words only dug at her skin, the feel of needles prickling at her stomach just from the thought of Dom and his ex wife together once again. It made her sick, unable to see reason no matter his words. This wasn’t helping the situation between them. That much was clear. Outside forces were constantly tugging them in different directions and suddenly it felt like she was pushing from the inside out with no ability to stop herself. “It just didn’t come up? That’s rich,” she mocked. Diana turned her back to him, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she struggled to control the shaking of her fingertips. “That’s bullshit and you know it. If that were me─what if I used that excuse next time I ran into one of my ex boyfriends?” Roles reverse, would it be him storming away from her? “I’m sorry, Dominic, I spent some time with my ex but I never felt the need to bring it up because you never asked me if I had spoken to them lately. Me bringing it up to you first would be unnatural.” Was she now being childish? Did it matter? No, she was hurt, she was angry, she was afraid. Love is a hell of a drug, digging at you until there’s nothing left but the worst parts of you. “Is it wrong of me to say yes? Am I out of line for wanting to know every time you speak to her? Please tell me I’m being unreasonable because I’d really love to know.”
