the air is tepid and still from the steam of the warm bath; kankuro might drown if he breathes in too deep. but he's ok with it, even more ok with kiba's solid weight settled in front of him as they both soak off a long week mission in the comfort of their bathtub. such an odd thing, baths; so much water, wasted. odd, but soothing. he can see the appeal. his nose buries in wet brown hair, and he feels the urge to say something he's never said before; "--i love you, kiba."

maybe bathtub wasn’t the right word for what they had.

honestly, two other fully grown adults could’ve joined them in the large tub and been fairly comfortable. the expansion of space had everything to do with the fact that akamaru was the size of a bear and nothing to do with they liked to share baths every now and then. this just came as an added bonus for them.

he had one foot balanced on kankuro’s raised knee, languidly scrubbing a wash cloth over it as he relayed some clan news he’d been mulling over. he wasn’t necessarily concentrated on the topic, but speaking gave him something to do. the silence that would ensue otherwise wasn’t something he feared; oftentimes it was the things that were left unsaid that were heard the most between them.

oftentimes, but not always.

kiba’s ramblings had quieted just a bit to stare particularly at a toenail in desperate need of a trim when some sort of calming scent slipped beneath his nose. he could not place a name for it, but he recognized what was associated with it; aligned chakras, togetherness.

                    i love you, kiba.

the washcloth plops into the water, followed by a loud crashing of a wild heart against ribs. the inuzuka remembers to gather his nerves enough to cover his mouth to hide the close-lipped smile that stretches from ear to ear, but not enough to stop the shell of his ears from burning red.
