i checked the manga and Near doesn't picture Mello basically at all in his thoughts? (generally, he doesn't seem to do that with anyone tbh) the first time he does is when he asked Soichiro if the person talking was eating something.

when Mello visits the base, Near can't see his face at all from this angle, while he can see Lidner's. sort of.

so he technically never sees his scar ?

the first time Mello fingerpuppet appears is in chapter 94 when Near talks to Aizawa (unless i missed it before)

and what was always interesting to me is that that's not a burn scar. he doesn't have to be accurate with it, but this is just another type. it looks like those you get from sharp objects. he could've drawn a brownish red mark or something. besides, its position is not even accurate, because Mello's scar goes past his eye / down to his nose

but since he has never seen his face, it makes sense he wouldn't know how it looks like and it's going off... imagination?

in the warehouse, again. Near doesn't picture him at all, let alone in this new state. and in the c-Kira one shot, he talks about the speech L gave to the Wammy's kids, so he sees that Mello.

i don't know what this means. if it's something sentimental, a protective measure (? is this an actual possible concern?) or maybe Near having some sort of face blindness, which could explain his need for fingerpuppets, since they appear just before he has to meet up with these people, but it was fun to look into it!
