Plying hand-spun hand-dyed yarn on my drop spindle.
what is the true height of a mountain? does it shift? perpetual age or growth? is there a rising and a falling? a giant wave of stone, moving in increments too small for us, in our quick time, (the time of seconds, not eons) to measure? i remember going to the doctor as a child, a nurse placing the right angles of her thumb and index finger around the corners of my chin, pulling up. she told me that the force of gravity pushes on the body; we are at our tallest in the morning and the weight of the day makes us lose ourselves, our height, to time. does a mountain lose itself to time too?
Domestic Color
I've been dyeing fabric and yarn with natural dye & common kitchen dyestuffs for three days and am already completely hooked. The colors are like nothing I've ever experienced before. I've used only two vegetables that are grown in abundance in New England summers and have gotten shades of peach, russet, ochre, citron, violet, lavender, and grey- with very simple additives like vinegar and pickling salt. While I've been waiting for stuff to come out of the dye-pot, I've also been reading about the history of hot acid & aniline dyes, and how the culture of dyeing, particularly wool, with locally sourced non toxic(ish) dyestuffs basically disappeared overnight, with the accidental invention of artificial purple. Literally thousands of years of knowledge, community, and culture via color almost totally lost to industrialization. I don't know why- maybe because I'm stressed between moving to our new studio and filling out 8 zillion job applications every day- but this hit me harder than usual tonight. While I don't think that it is useful to say that industrialization is some monolithic monster that we have to defeat with pitchforks, unpasteurized milk, and chicken poop, I do think that it is important to recognize this thing that I have been feeling for a long time. Somewhere along the way I think that maybe we took a wrong turn. tl;dr capitalism ruins everything.

Dream Record 12/10
I had a dream that my partner and I were living in a small cabin. It was winter with several feet of snow. At one end of the cabin, we had a large sliding glass door. I was in the kitchen at dusk and I heard a knock on the glass. A small boy, probably around 5, was standing outside of the door, in the snow, not dressed at all for the weather. I let him in and he asked me to take him back to his family. For some reason I decided that it would be best if he stayed the night and in the morning we would look for his family. Morning came and he explained that he wasn't a human. He was a wolverine, and if I took him near a stream where there were still tall reeds and squeezed one of his teeth that he would turn back into a wolverine and his family would come back. I took him to the spot that he requested near a partially frozen stream, where there were still some cattails and tall grasses poking out above the snow. I cleared a little place for him to lie down in the grass and snow. He showed me which tooth to squeeze. He undressed and laid down on the snow. He said, "okay" and opened his mouth. I squeezed his tooth. He immediately lost consciousness. I waited. I realized that he wasn't breathing and became worried. I started to cry, thinking that he was dead. I didn't know what to do, other than wrap his body in a long scarf that I was wearing. I held him like a baby and cried. Underneath the wrapping, I started to feel movement. Then he started to growl. I dropped him and out from the folds of the scarf, a wolverine bounded across the partially frozen stream to another wolverine waiting on the other side.
