What I Did Not Know:

It seems that the English word "orange" first was used in the 13th Century to refer to the fruit. It wasn't until the 16th century that we see the word being used for the color.

What I Did Not Know: According to allaboutwildlife.com the most endagered animal is the Ivory Billed Woodpecker. I have also read that unfortunately it may actually be extinct now.

What I Did Not Know: This one kind of wierds me out - The Church of Euthanasia is a very strange suposed not for profit org. whose foundation is voluntary human population reduction. They focus on a "Dont Procreate" montra, but while browsing their website I see where they dont discourage suicide or canibalism. Although they do stipulate if you partake in canibalism, the victim must already be deceased. Deffinitely not one of the happiest things I have run accross.

What I Did Not Know: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died only hours apart on the same day - July 4th 1826, the 50th annivarsary of US Independance. James Monroe also died on July 4th.

What I Did Not Know: Madoc was a Welsh prince who in 1170 A.D. according to some landed in present day Alabama using only a canoe style boat.

What I Did Not Know: The Dvorak Keyboard was developed in the 30s to compete with the qwerty keyboard. The QWERTY was made to make typing slower to reduce jamming in old manual mechanical typwriters.

What I Did Not Know: The device used to determine foot size at shoe stores is called a Brannock Device. It was developed in 1927.

What I Did Not Know: Bo-Taoshi is a Japanese version of capture the flag. One team holds a post verticle while team 2 tries to lower the post to 30 degrees.

What I Did Not Know: Pica is a disorder where a person is compelled to eat non food items such as nails, dirt, paper, batteries, etc.

What I Did Not Know: The Hand Pan is a pretty sweet instrument. Dante Bucci plays it in this linked video for a good example of its sound.

What I Did Not Know: Royal St. George's has hosted 13 British Open's. It hosted the first Open outside of Scottland.

What I Did Not Know: Aerogel is an interesting material that was originally created in the 1930s. It starts as a gel. The liquid is removed from the gel and replaced with a gas. It was entered in the guiness book of world records as the lightest solid.

What I Did Not Know: Snap N' Pops contain sand and a small amount of silver Fulminate a high explosive. The sand acts as a buffer to reduce the mini explosion to primarly an audible crack.

What I Did Not Know: The largest cattle Ranch in the U.S. is in Florida. Even more intresting, The Deseret Cattle Ranch in FL which is home to 44K head of cattle is owened by the LDS church (Mormons). It is around 300,000acres.

What I Did Not Know: Elephant's Toothpaste is a science experiment style reaction between Hydrogen Peroxide, soap, and a catalyst. In our case today at the Omaha Children's Museum they used activated yeast, but there are a number of catalysts that can be used. The reaction creates a foamy mess that if done in a soda bottle, it looks like toothpaste. Search youtube.com for some cool video of this reaction.

What I Did Not Know: Harney Peak in #SouthDakota is the #highest point between the Rockies and the Pyranese Mountains in Europe. This according to the plaque on the overlook stone structure at the summit of the peak. My wife and I hiked up the 7000+ ft peak this morning with both kids in backpacks.

What I Did Not Know: Rapid City SD has a brewery that has taken up shop inside one of the original (now retired) RCFD fire stations.
