They’ve been living on borrowed time.

Ava has known that since the beginning. Known since the moment she woke up with a Halo thrust into her back. Known since Beatrice arranged for two passports under false identities. Known that every day they wake up is a day closer to being called back.

So of course she’s going to make the most of it.

Beatrice brings her to a small town in the Alps, the kind of place that’s not sought but wandered into. But for all her familiarity with their current environment, Beatrice doesn’t seem too keen on integrating with the locals.

But it’s a small enough town. They have to fit in. It’s one of the many reasons Ava uses to convince Beatrice into letting her get a job. She picks bartending, because the movies always made it look fun—fast hands circling, diving, shoveling ice, pouring drinks. Always in motion. Always creating. Ava can’t resist its vibrance, people always milling around—hunched over a computer, chatting, dancing. Motion. Movement.

And when Beatrice follows, it only makes her happier.
