Project 2: Final thoughts

Here is what my final zine looks like and the final photos that are on it. The zine is supposed to be read from the bottom up. The story follows the two sitting in a room together, thinking of their insecurities and sharing them with each other to be more united. It was so much fun to make this, and i love how my zine turned out.

I combined the two top images into the bottom images and changed the colours a bit. I did this to transition from the first models insecurities to the second models insecurities. there is also the implication that the second model stare is always on the first models mind, and the fear of having her thoughts being watched.

Here are the 24 total images unedited that i will use in some way or another on my Zine. I would post them all at a time on tumblr, but that is way to many images at once for tumblr to handle so i’ll send them a little at a time. All the unedited photos are under the “Project 2: Zine 2″ post.

I have found what I am looking for! I love the idea of my zine looking like a film reel. I found this tutorial when googling ‘behind the scenes’ as what i wanted my photos to focus on. My idea is that you only find out the insecurities of other people behind the scenes, in private with people you trust to share them with. This tutorial is roughly what my final zine will look like.

Project 2: Experiment 8

I tried out the idea of a book for my zine this time, after the last was too complicated. The idea for this one is a photo of my two models holding their hands out on the cover, with a smaller photo of them back to back connecting the two pages. on the back of the book, there is to be a photo of the two models blended together to show unity. the inside of the book is to have a lot of secret pockets that you can open and look at the photos. I’m not too keen on this idea, due to it being too boring and not as aesthetically pleasing as i would like the zine itself to be.

100 more photos to go through. These were interesting to shoot, due to the uncomfortable angles, and lighting difficulties. in these shots, it was more personalised to the characters insecurities. i had taken photos of back acne, stretch marks, exposed ribs, and glasses. this was difficult to shoot because of the uncomfortableness of exposing peoples insecurities to the camera. Because of this, some of the photos taken were of myself, and some of my physical insecurities.

I tried to experiment with the shape of the zine more. I made a fortune teller, intending to have more images focused on how our insecurities change overtime. i decided against this style due to the fortune teller being too fragile to withstand people folding it and tearing at the bottom.

121 more photos towards my project. I’m getting a more clearer head on what photos i want to present in my zine. I had a lot of fun taking these, but found it difficult to picture where they would go in my zine due to having found out what style of zine i want to create.

so, i made a mistake. I have been trying to merge two photos together and its just not working out, but i put so much effort into it i want to keep it. Ultimately, i know its a bad idea to put it on my zine. In swaying that, im going to put it into my zine because i actually love the photo so much. I love the idea of merging bodies, as in sharing their insecurities and accepting them as their own.

I’ve taken 128 photo’s in the first batch of photos, experimenting and trying out different poses. I experimented with a few of the photos, trying different ways to convey my meanings behind the images. This is an example of what i’ve been working on:

Project 2: Experiment 2

This is the next model of zine i have tried. This is an origami flower, playing with the idea that flowers are beautiful even when they are open. The images on the outside of the flower are cute photos of my two models, showing how happy they are. When you open the flower, the images on the insides are all their insecurities, and things they are uncomfortable with. The reason why i decided against this zine is because it was too simple, and didn't involve the reader as much as i would like them to.

I experimented with the idea of my zine being an explosion box. i sketched out the ideas for my photographs, drawing wholesome photos on the outside, and the characters insecurities on the inside. After testing this, i decided against this model. Apart from the over complication of the design, it was distracting from the subtext of the photos. i didn't want to distract from the theme of my images.

this is hard to type about, because there is too much to put under this research idea. Underneath are a lot of links to origami ideas by people on the internet. there is a total of 30 different origami ideas for my zine.

Project 2: Research 3

i experimented with the colours against my models skin, and her lipstick. Here are four of my favourite colour matches. the first match is gold light with green smaller lights. the second image is blue light with magenta smaller lights. the third is teal light with green smaller lights. the final image image is magenta with blue smaller lights. all the images have an even smaller orange light next to her, but you can only see the light in a few images. ultimately, i decided that i loved the last images coloured lights, as it brings out the colour of the salt lamp more with beautiful rimmed lighting.

I really like this photographer. She has a lot really beautiful photos, with a lot of deeper context written under her instagram posts. Here are some of my favourites of hers. The first image is really nice, combining two photos overtop of each other. the second image is tranquil and serine. the position of the model against the water, and the colour grading is really nice, creating food for thought. i love the blur of the third photo. this creates such a good narrative, and invites people to think more deeply about this image, letting them apply it to their own lives and create their own meaning to this image. the fourth image speaks so deeply to me. this image is about body positivity and eating disorders. the photo was taken in 2017 and posted this year, as the photographer had finally gotten over her eating disorder. this photo was showing her weakest to the camera, but also shows her growth to where she is now.

I quite like this music video, and have taken inspiration from the vibe of it. Even though it’s a music video and not a set of images, the shots for the film are very pretty, and work well on their own without the context of the video. There are a lot of bright colours, and intimate scenes, which work well with my theme. In the first image, I like the style of laying a photo down over another photo. i love the glitter tears for the second image, and intend to do something similar in my imagery. i like the intimacy shared in the other few. photos, and the bright colours in each shot.
