HP AU - Hogwarts’ Most Majestic Pets - Mads & Bert

Herbert was a lawful student when concerning himself, well, mostly he was. It could have partially been Armaud’ unknowing influence, or just his general harmless curiosity, but he would from time to time find himself, most often in the early morning, sneaking into the restricted section of the library to freshen up on some lesser known spells or potions. Over the years, he found many interesting things in these so called forbidden books that has nothing particularly out of bounds about them. Sure, he understood that some of these knowledge, when fallen into the wrong hands could lead to catastrophic mischief, but part of him also had to point out the hypocrisy of it. In this magic world they live in, people are bound to find a way to gain the knowledge they desire. To him, it would prove to be much more pragmatic to just properly teach people to be more virtuous in their conducts, and allow them the freedom of exploration while holding honest and upright intentions in their heart.
He was reasonably familiar with the closed off section of the library by now, and dressed in his normal sweater, without anything to directly identify him, he cast a spell to make him appear blonde, put on a round pair of fake glasses and confidently slipped his way into the restricted section of the library. He doesn’t usually come here at this time of the day, but as he was just about to finish up his reading and research on The Book of Spells, he just simply couldn’t have it on hold any longer.
“Heh, I could think of a several uses for this one…” he mumbled quietly to himself, raising a brow delightedly as he read the passage about a replicating spell and discreetly repeating the incantation, not noticing at all when a small creature came leaping out from the gaps on the shelf, staring down at him intently.
“Haaahh!” A repressed yelp came hissing out of his mouth when the small creature suddenly came leaping down at him onto the book he was reading, and directly into his face. He fell back a few steps, though thankfully not collapsing onto anything. In panic, he clawed at the sudden toad and pulled it off his face, along with his fake glasses and looked around frantically to make sure no one saw him.
“Oh Merlin’s Beard…” he whimpered when he caught a glimpse of a person seemingly avoiding him from the end of the aisle, he only hoped that they didn’t recognize him, or that they were a like minded individual where he could explain his situation to.
At first glance Mads didn’t recognize the person who stood, open book in hand, half way down the aisle of books she’d just turned into, but that was hardly her initial concern as she ducked away in a last ditch attempt to avoid being seen. Both those concerns went out the window entirely when a small fast moving object seemed to throw itself at the open book, immediately ricocheting off into the surprised restricted section goer’s face.
His yelp ended all possibility of Mads restraining her initial surprised laugh, but she bit down hard on her bottom lip to hold back the rest of the resulting laughter bubbling in her chest. Laughing too loudly might draw attention, which was the last thing you wanted when sneaking around a place that had the word restricted in it’s name. Biting her lip, Mads stepped fully into the aisle, clutching the shelf closest to her as if the force of her repressed laughter might send her toppling at any minute.
His whimper drew her attention again, and Mads attempted to school her expression into something resembling idle curiosity as opposed to poorly restrained amusement. With a closer look, Mads blinked over at the person who seemed to be an inexplicably blonde Herbert Dubois, before waving off his concern with a vague gesture of her free hand. “A dangerous place, the restricted section,” she managed to quell her urge to laugh, but her grin revealed the extent of her amusement just as clearly, “never know what’s going to happen.”
