Lee Faan

Sarinrat Penpatcharapanich is a digital artist from Thailand who specializes in Illustration design and concept art. She received her MFA in Computer Arts with a concentration in Motion Graphics from the School of Visual Arts in New York (2018), and her BFA in Illustration Design from The Parsons School of Design at The New School (2016). While working as a game artist at Arcade Distillery in New York (2016), Sarinrat helped conceptualize characters and environments for numerous games, including Death Tales and Skull Pirates. In 2014, she assisted with the development of game art assets for international gaming projects at Hive Studio in Bangkok. Strongly influenced by the art and culture of her native Thailand, Sarinrat’s creative vision overflows with vibrant colors, whimsical folklore, and Buddhist philosophy within a contemporary digital context. Plai and the Forest (2018) by Sarinrat Penpatcharapanich is a 2.5D animation inspired by the Buddhist folktale The Mustard Seed. A linear narrative, illustrated with realistic details, a touch of abstraction and distinctive textures, the film visually references traditional Thai landscapes, architecture and objects. Through a holistic Eastern approach to death framed within a spiritual metaphor, Plai and the Forest shares a comforting view of life in its final moments. PRESS RELEASE

Thesis Animation  This is a 3-minute 2D animated thesis project entitled Mustard Seed, I will explore teachings on the Buddhist concept of death and its acceptance. The visual elements in the animation will present a child’s perspective by using vibrant colors within an awe-inspiring environment. The backgrounds and foreground elements will be hand painted to give off a fairy-tale feel.
