Unexpectedly, Akkey still makes me cry just like 4 years ago
A Concerto Day 2 (Nijifes 2026) retrospective
This might just focus more on Akkey (Saegusa Akina) troughout Concerto Day 2 so don't expect a fair review of Concerto Day 2 but more of a retrospective of me as a doushi (Akina fan) since 2021 who is thrusted upon Concerto Day 2 lol
Happy reading!
Where do I even start?
Maybe let's start from me suddenly getting back into vtubers right after watching 3SKM's 3D live last November. Truly that's another can of worms to elaborate but all you need to know it sparked my love for vtubers once again.
Then Nijifes 2026 concert lineup was announced last November
And there you have it, Akkey in the sea of newbies lol. It gave me a chuckle because this old ass 2019 debut guy is gonna sing with what? His juniors from 2022-2024?
The announcement didn't really meant anything to me to be honest because:
Hes done this before back in Fantasia 2023
Hes a guy who managed to sold out a stadium back in 2024 for his solo concert
Of course he sticks out like a sore thumb in the lineup but it wasnt anything big nor new when it came to his achievements. So in the end I'm just neutral about it.
Fast forward to May 2026, unfortunately the Nijifes 2026 hype got to me and since I have an IRL friend whos a huge yaminion and shes willing to do a Concerto day 2 watchalong.
There are other factors aside Akkey that pushed me wanting to watch Concerto Day 2:
I am a voltaskm oshi so ofc I would want to watch Serao, Kanato and Kitamin perform
Well. Unfortunately. I've been liking Tetsu as of late and. Yeah. Well I dont need to explain much (sweats)
So that means 5/8 of them are my oshi technichally...
The day has dawned for me to watch it, comically we watched the concert in our sculpting studio/ atelier (For context I go to art school) since the yaminion friend of mine wanted to work on her sculpture while rewatching the concert.
Im pretty okay troughout the 1st half of the setlist. There are some Akkey centric notes I took:
Akkey singing in English for ANTI-HERO was crazy that was unexpected at all i was GAGGED
AISCREAM SAIKOOO WWWW 北見くん天才じゃんww tysm Kitamin ur so goated I now can witness Akkey performing aiscream tskr
I think I blacked out in NEW ERA I don't remember much I think I need to rewatch it
Non akkey note: I cried during Alban's Fire Flower goddammittt you got me Alban. This song is so nostalgic to me so it really adds to my feeling when he sang this
If you noticed (if you actually watch the concert) they had not sang a single ballad song in the setlist. Hm strange, I thought. And all the while if you're a doushi, you would know Akkey specializes in ballads and relatively slow/ emotional songs.
And then... Niji (Takahashi Yu) happened
And it came like a waterfall
Truly I didn't expect much from this concert, I genuinenly just wanted to have a good time watching it. But man. Man.
It doesent help the fact that this song is about reaching out for your dreams and how difficult the dream may be you will prevail and make it come true yourself... All the while using rainbow (niji) allegory... GAH..
Im so full of emotions just thinking back to this performance. The moment it got to
その手をかざせば, 夢に届きそうだ
(if you raise your hand, it seems you can reach your dream)
I just started crying full on tears it did NOT stop. Suddenly my memories of watching Akkey back in 2021 flooded my vision, hell the last time I saw him perform was back in FuwaGusa 3D Live 2021. He truly grown so much and I could not contain myself. I kept spouting "sialan (damn you) Saegusa Akina" in between my tears, I am truly truly truly damned from the start the fact that I am a doushi.
He holds his mic vertically upside-down and I felt it so well, you know hes putting his heart on his sleeve and pouring all of his feelings in his singing. When he does this it's over, theres no going back, he's gonna give his all.
When he sang
7色に変えていく
(change into 7 colors)
I felt my cheeks getting hotter and truly the 7 colored rainbow behind him doesent help at all lol. If I was sobbing before, this part got me more emotional.
I keep forgetting which part was it, but the camera would switch into his pov to the audience and to see him surrounded by those red penlights, yeah truly
奇跡を待ちはしないよ,
それを起こしに行くんだろう
(you won't wait for a miracle,
you'll go and make it happen)
this song is made for him.
He ended the song with a bow and a rainbow colored lights behind him and red penlights in front of him, then he wiped his sweat. Its truly a performance you got to see with your own eyes and ears. I have never felt this shaken over a vtuber performance before.
Its been four solid years mind you. If you want to know how untapped I am in these four years when it comes to vtubers: I didnt even watch Unity (his solo concert) back in 2024 nor did I care enough to stream his mini album UniVerse.
Four years of not even giving a damn to vtubers and yet here I am. The fresh feeling of supporting my first ever Nijisanji JP kamioshi is still there and I'm glad I'm here to witness Concerto Day 2.
I realized how empty my blog is and somehow rn im having a writer moment so yeah I really wanna go back to tumblr to write and utilize its blog-type post. So expect a blog post once or twice a month on anything relating to whatever im into at the moment.
(also other reason being im bored writing research papers i think i need leisure writing too)
Hi Jez!! First of all, I would like to say that I LOVE your art so much! I've been following you since the days you were obsessed with AkiHam and made me buy P3P just to play with her, hehehe~ Your art is so inspirational!! Could you explain a little bit more about the underpainting process on digital, please? Do you lower the opacity on the flat colors and after that you merge it so it gets a bit of the underpainting color? Or is it another way to do it? I get the idea on traditional painting but I can't get it right on digital for some reason T___T
hi! thank you for the kind words and continuous support!! 😭
to achieve the best results with underpaintings, i would suggest a semi-transparent brush and slowly build up color from there! like so:
before anything else, when painting digitally, it's good to remember this: pigments mix naturally in almost all traditional mediums! but this doesn't happen as nicely on digital because instead of pigments mixing, the colors simply overlap one another. this is one of the reasons why it's easy for digital paintings to lose vibrancy and look muddy.
so you will have to manually pick colors to retain its vibrancy while you build up your colors while rendering. a quick way to alleviate this is to eyedrop the middle point of the two colors and ramp up the saturation and hue
but this also has its own fallbacks as you might lose color value (also important to make your paintings retain vibrancy) if you're not careful! doing it this way is frequently inaccurate as well, so use sparingly! i encourage you to try and manually pick the in-between color instead as it also helps you practice your color intuition.
i'm telling you this because you will most likely run into this problem of your colors gradually looking blander as you keep layering your colors over the other if you don't adjust them as you go.
as for my process itself, what i tend to do is lay down my local colors in the bare minimum, just so i get a general sense of what they are in my paintings. this way the underpainting still seeps through more naturally. look at this, this is pretty much the "flat color" i laid down
after this i lay down a rough sense of the shadows i want, merge it into a new layer and start rendering from there. i personally try not to overrender it because like i said earlier, the more i layer the colors the muddier it gets and i don't want to cover up the range of colors i've made by eyedropping.
A couple of years ago, I came across a compilation of interviews, including some that shared some very interesting info about Aigis' role in the game and the reasons why she didn't have a S-Link in the original Persona 3. I didn't trust my Japanese enough to capture all the nuance though, so the screenshots have been sitting in my folders collecting dust.
Well, no more! We now luckily have a professional Japanese translator in the Aikoto Server, and she has kindly gone ahead and translated the interviews in question. Thank you so much, kitaroai!
Interviews below the cut!
Dengeki PlayStation September 8, 2006 issue Vol.364 "Persona 3" Development Staff Interview
Dengeki PlayStation: I got the impression that Aigis was the main heroine of this work. What made you decide on having a robot girl as the game’s main heroine?
Tanaka (Writer): While I didn’t particularly set out to write her as one would a “main heroine”, we felt that a character who is unaffected by death was essential to a story with “Death” as its theme. In order to explore that theme, it was crucial to depict the process of an existence that starts-off not understanding the meaning of “death”, only to eventually come to face it and acknowledge it.
Soejima (Character Designer): When it comes “heroines”, the game has a system that allows you to date various girls… But personally, I feel that Yukari is a girl that is nearby, while Aigis is the heroine of the main story, or to be more exact, a character that is at the very core of it.
Dengeki PlayStation: So rather than a “heroine”, she could be considered another protagonist?
Hashino (Director): Yes… Aigis is special. She was necessary to depict the story we wanted to tell.
Dengeki PlayStation: I imagine that she is the only female character without a Social Link precisely because she is the one at the heart of the story.
Tanaka: Indeed. It wouldn’t be realistic to say that you can experience love with a robot partner in the exact same way you would with a human, but above all, we feared that giving her a Social Link would make her special role in the story seem less important.
Hashino: She was going to have a Social Link at first and we prepared the scenario for it, but we ultimately decided not to include it.
Dengeki PlayStation: And what about an ending that's influenced by the relationships built in the Social Links? For example, did you ever consider having character-exclusive endings?
Hashino: The staff discussed having character-exclusive endings depending on which Social Links the player did. However, we ultimately decided not to do so because it would take us away from the main story and from what we truly wanted to depict. The relationships with the girls reach their own conclusions in the daily school life section, which is separate from the main story.

Material/Dengeki PlayStation July 28, 2006 issue Vol.359 "Persona 3" Interview with Katsura Hashino and Shigenori Soejima
Hashino: Aigis, on the other hand, is a character we added from the very beginning. Since she is a robot, she lacks “feelings”, so we wanted to contrast that with the Protagonist’s emotional side. She was also an indispensable character because she has no fear of “Death”, the main theme of this work.
Soejima: The setting of the story came before the concept, I believe. I remember I started drawing without knowing the story nor its stakes, which was a struggle.
Hashino: […] At first, Soejima seemed to be against the idea of a robot girl, but after convincing him that it was necessary precisely because Aigis is the heroine, it somehow worked out. Was that why you designed her with her machinery exposed?
Soejima: No, it’s not as if I drew her like that as a form of revenge (laughs). I just wanted her design to have more of a nostalgic vibe rather than a high-tech one. My tastes also played a part in it, though (laughs).
Soejima (Character Designer): By the way, when it comes to Persona 3, I only worked directly on the one scene where we see Aigis for the first time during the trip to Yakushima.
Dengeki Maou: Do you mean that was the scene you were most particular about?
Soejima: Since that is the scene where we see Aigis for the first time, the Director, Hashino, asked me to make it as cute as possible (Laughs).
I don’t think I ever truly knew what it was like to have a blorbo until Frieren. I’m what, 3 days in to watching Sousou no Frieren, and I am absolutely in love with this skrunkly immortal failgirl girlboss. I love how goofy she is about her special interest and how badass she can be, and how she spends 90% of her time finding silly little spells that change the colour of apples and make hot tea. I love how she learns what it’s like to lose and regret and grow and change in such a short amount of time (for her) and how she wants to develop stronger, deeper connections while also being so autistic. She’s so effortlessly cool and also incapable of getting up before noon. She sleeps like a tornado and has to wear 17 layers when there’s the slightest chill in the air. She is such a Character™ and I love her
