here we go!
Jieun sighed as she sat cross-legged on her couch, looking at the rain as it pattered the windows just a few steps away. Checking her phone, she sighed again at the sight of only a notification from Instagram.
@.borabora_sugar sent you a post by menstruallydisturbedtampon.
"I need to stop sighing so much," she told herself, curling up into a little ball of Jieun. All she wanted was a simple text, a minute long call, anything from you. She decided she'd done enough moping around and got up to make herself some tea, jumping a little when she heard the kettle screaming.
She poured the water into a cup after adding a couple slices of fresh ginger and let the tea steep for awhile, eating the rest of the ginger sitting on the counter, restlessly looking from her phone to the tea and her phone again. Â
After about ten minutes of sitting in the kitchen drinking her tea, Jieun went upstairs, her short hair tickling her neck.
She searched your closet for a sweater to wear, something soft and large and warm, just to have a piece of you with her. She found one, a maroon crew neck with sleeves that ran past her fingertips. She put it on and went back downstairs, but not before taking a look at the bed in the center of the room, empty.
She sat as she did earlier, cross-legged on the couch and restarting the cycle with a sigh. Oh how the rain got her down. She looked at her phone again, looking through old pictures of you both. She smiled when she came across a certain photo.
She'd snapped a quick picture of you sleeping. It was stupid, she thought, to reminisce on something so simple, but she missed you.
Jieun shot up when she heard keys jingling outside the door, knowing it was you, and she ran to answer it. She opened the door to your smiling face, but she didn't smile back.
"Where the hell were you? I was worried sick!" You walked past her, at least managing to get your jacket off and onto a nearby chair without her yelling again, but you weren't that lucky.
"Where were you, Y/N? I was so worried about you! You didn't answer my calls, you didn't read my texts, you-"
Cutting Jieun off while she ranted was never a good idea, but you did anyway. "I visited my mom today." Your voice was thick with something Jieun couldn't place. Was it anger or something else?
"Y/N, you could've told me you were going down to see her. I would've driven you." Jieun's voice was settling, not quite there yet, but it was settling. "I haven't seen her in a while anyway. How's she doing?"
You shifted a little, leading her to the living room to sit down. You told her to be natural when she sat criss-crossed. You hated when she did that; "It'll make your legs stiff!"
"She not doing well, Eunnie." The nickname made Jieun smile a little, despite the morose mood lingering over the both of you. "She's just not." You teared up, remember how your mother slurred her words so hard and looked so out of it when you tried to take her grocery shopping.
*
"Mom, please. You haven't been out of this house in months. When did you last shop for groceries?" You tugged at her wrist, trying to get her off the couch. "Uh, like three weeks or something." You rolled your eyes and picked up your keys from the cloudy dish on the coffee table. "I'll be back in an hour. Clean yourself up."
You hastily searched the store aisles for vitamins, water bottles and something to cook for her other than instant ramen. You finally found what you needed, checked out and drove back to your mom's flat.
"Mom! I'm back!" You dropped your keys into the same cloudy dish on the coffee table and put away the groceries. You caught your mom stumbling out of her room, half-empty bottle of soju in hand. "Put it down, mother." She dropped the glass bottle on the floor, watching it shatter near her feet.
"You know what? I'm done. I'm done trying to help you through this bullshit that you're not even trying to improve on your own! Â You tell me you're going to AA and you're not. You tell me you're sober and you're obviously not. You're not alcoholic, you know. You just couldn't stay sober long enough to support your own fucking daughter. You didn't even show up to my wedding! How sick are you?"
You left, grabbing your keys and driving that long five-hour drive back to you and Jieun's shared apartment.
*
Jieun held you as you cried, her own face streaked with tears. "Baby, it's okay. She didn't accept your offer to help her, so it's her fault. Let it go, sweetheart."
You looked up at her with red eyes. "Ji, I can't let it go. She was supposed to be my mom! But now she's not even thinking of me." You pitifully wrapped your arms around Jieun's waist, burying your face into her side.
"You're wearing my sweater," you mumbled. Jieun just nodded, holding you a little tighter.
