THE PEOPLE’S PRINCESS.
TIMING : 1989 PAIRING : BLACK!OC X BADERA!MICHAEL
ACT VII.
“Where are you now?” Michael’s pleasant voice in her ear, a smile grows on Kaliyah’s lips. Her hands pushing open the doors of the record shop, the soft fabric of her skirt brushes pass her legs as she skates through the aisles. The white tips of her nails scratch on top of the records, a blocky Motorola phone pressed to the side of her face. A couple security personnel spreading around the store. Kaliyah was known, definitely, but it wasn’t everyday she was recognized when not with her husband. Her look differentiated from day to day and that was on purpose.
Additionally, Michael preferred she’d go to places early or late at night when fewer people were awake. She loved to enjoy the little moments before being noticed, they brought her small senses of comfort.
“The record store, I asked if they could hold a record for me. Picking it up right now but, I’m thinking of getting a few more while I’m here. You want anything?” Her eyes straying to the pieces of music tucked tightly together in black bins, her fingers skimming through them meticulously. The stale smell of the plastic whiffs past her nose, she furrows her eyebrows going to look closer at a record peeking out the back.
“I want you to be safe, and I want you here with me.” Kaliyah lifting it up, she holds it to her chest. Her legs moving over into the next walkway and security watching her actions every once in a while.
“Michael, I’ll be over there soon. Plus, you know—
“I know.” It was a brief amount of silence, her hand clenching the record in her hand. She knew he was frustrated about the whole ordeal, in fact, it angered him to his core. The soft music around the store diving into her thoughts, interrupting her words for a second.
“I talked with them earlier about it, they said to just give it a week.” They’ve been separated for some days, her ex hurling threats Kaliyah’s way caused them and their team to be on high-alert. The actions being sent via mail, they left their home and transitioned to another in a distant and less crowded area. On their request, the police searching for him to deliver the restraining order that Kaliyah gladly signed off on. Their team thought it be better if they went different ways for just a week…or two. Feeling if he saw them together the situation would get dire, and that’s the last thing they want. Michael exiting the recording studio he was in, he shuts the door behind him and exhales sharply.
Kaliyah arching her eyebrow, her side leaning onto two bins full of discounted vinyls. “I need you, so bad, baby.” A confession, Michael held back for weeks and was aware she’s doing it herself. Holding back, like him, two mirrors bouncing their reflection betwixt one another. She swallows a lump of spit in her throat, his tone deepened, the intensity swirling through the receiver and activating a commotion in her lower stomach. “Angel, you know I do.” He tugs at his collar, his fingers unhooking the two buttons squeezing at his neck.
Her eyes shutting and fingers grasping the device, “please, don’t talk like that. Oh my goodness.” A little snicker going into her ear, he hugs the phone closer to his mouth. “Seriously, Michael, you’re getting me worked up.”
“I miss you that’s all…we’ve been keeping our distance before this because of what we did.” She felt her cheeks tighten, her face becoming balmy. The room stuffy, a dizzy spell felt like it washed over her. They hadn’t discussed what happened and him bringing it up awakened the memory in the best way. Thinking maybe he forgot, but how could he? The way she felt, the way they needed each other, her vulnerability, legs around his body. Kaliyah was engraved in his memory. “And now we really have to keep our distance, it’s annoying knowing how much time I took for granted. I should’ve been making love to you.”
“Michael.”
“This is what he wants and I’m not gonna let him keep you from me.” With beating hearts, the both of them feeling a force on their chests, they began to think about that alluring night in the west-wing bathroom. Kaliyah glancing at the security, some pretending to look at magazines and others planted by the entrance. The store completely empty, her body sticking to the table that held the various containers.
“It’s just, just a few more days,” Kaliyah trying to convince herself that she could hold on for that long, “besides, he’s been quiet since the paps haven’t seen us together.”
“Liyah, I don’t think we should wait a few more days.”
“Mr. Jackson, you really sound frustrated.”
“That’s because I am, don’t be mean, baby.” She felt his smile through the phone, her tongue sliding across the caps in her closed mouth. She twiddled with the gold around her neck, a dainty ‘m’ resting on her cleavage. He had the same, a ‘k’ dangling by his heart at all times, they didn’t go a day without them. Their love never eroding like the necklaces, it was a lifetime warranty, forever.
“Thank you for the letter earlier, it was so beautiful.” Kaliyah treading down the aisle once more, her hand sliding on the records and the vinyl still held to her side. Her mind going back to the words he wrote, so sweet honey poured from the sentences.
“I had to give my love to you in some way, it couldn’t have been enough to satisfy the distance.”
“It wasn’t but, I made it useful this morning.” Her actions were implied, she heard him clear his throat, snorts of laughter coming out of her mouth. “Oh, don’t be embarrassed now you’ve been teasing me on this call for the last five minutes,”
“i know, I know. And I believe I have a resolution for that. I can send a car for you right now if you’d like. They didn’t say we couldn’t meet up, just that we couldn’t be seen in the public eye.” His hand going to the back of his neck, he walks back into the home studio throwing a nod to the few men who sit at the console. Kaliyah’s ring twinkling under the ceiling lights as she picks out another record, they hadn’t seen each other in two days. Staying with Kamara, where she felt the second most safest, her sister having moved from their hometown to California to continue her fashion dreams. Kaliyah being the other reason, they had one other to run to if anything were to happened.
“You’re a bad influence…send the car.”
“Stay put.”
“Of course I will.” Kaliyah tilting her head down to the side, she makes her way to the counter with her finds secured in her hand. “Stay on the phone with me till I get there?” She sits the device down already knowing his answer, easing the records in front of the clerk. “Alex, you can open the store back up in thirty minutes. I really appreciate you doing this for me again.” The older woman punching numbers into the register, a piece of gum being chewed gradually in her mouth.
“And here I was enjoying my break, of course Liyah. I don’t mind. Let me get your song from the back.” Kaliyah nodding, a small grin on her lips as she picks the phone back up only to hear Michael speaking to another person. Her ride being confirmed in a few words and Alex coming Kaliyah’s way to place the records in a tote bag, a complimentary, the store provides. “How have you two been? You okay? I know that troublesome ex of yours is being a douche.”
“Tell me about it.” Michael chiming in from behind the speaker, a soft laugh comes from his wife’s lips.
“We’re doing well, he’s been making sure I’ve been safe. They’ve been on top of it, I promise.”
“Good, we don’t need anything to happen to our princess.” Kaliyah blushing, she hadn’t been referred to as a person of royalty before. Alex giggling at her embarrassed state, she pulls three records from under the counter. Placing them in the bag quick and Kaliyah protesting immediately. “They’re for you, my treat. Teena Marie, Al Green, and Sade.”
“Come on, you don’t have to.” She whines, sliding the tote back then going to dig into her purse.
“Yes I do, because we love you both and we thank you for your continued support. Now, I’m gonna turn my back and put these magazines away.” Alex pushing the sack forward, Kaliyah takes it, her guard grabbing ahold of the strap for her and the clerk turning on her heels. She digs the money out her purse anyways, sitting several large bills on the newspapers scattered across the counter. Walking to the exit, they came outside, the warm air mixed with gentle currents of cool wind. Her coils wavering mildly, she draws out a blunt from her white tank and places it between her lips. Her hands searching her body frantically, cussing underneath her breath.
“Smoking again?”
“Darling, you know it calms my nerves.”
“I know, princess.” One of her security holding out matches, she thanks him quietly and makes movements to take the box. Her fingers striking a match against the strip, a flame engulfing the red tip in seconds. Her hand covering the flame from a distance, she shakes out the fire and inhales. Exhaling, a cloud of smoke dispersing into the air. The man taking the box and used match from her hand, giving him gratitude once again before sinking into her session. “I love you.”
“I love you.” Ten minutes later, the car coming up and Kaliyah putting the flame out on a nearby garbage can. She places the blunt in a small pocket on the side of her purse then allows the security to open the door for her. Ducking into the backseat of the Cadillac with the ends of her midi skirt in her hand, she relaxes her head onto the back of the cushion. Closing her eyes and feeling woozy, the high overtaking her brain already. Michael still on the other end, continuing their conversation. They could talk for hours, and they could be silent together even longer. It brought him comfort, he didn’t mind sometimes while he was working.
“I’m almost there.” Kaliyah sings over the speaker, the sun setting in the horizon. She lets the window down, her head resting on the door and her eyes scanning the city as they drove on the street. This was all different to her, a culture shock almost. Her being from the deep south then transitioning to a city setting, it was like Dorothy being swept away to Oz. A group of women pointing at her as they pull to a stop light, shrieks following as Kaliyah waves with an elated smile on her lips. The grills on her select teeth glistening brightly at the supporters.
“Tell them I said hey and I love them.”
“Michael says he loves you and hey!” She screams the last part as they drive off, half her body hanging out and her hand swinging side to side as she bids them a goodbye. The women jumping up and down excitedly, voices blaring down the street and reaching Michael. “You should’ve seen them, they were so happy.” Kaliyah chuckling, she places her hand over her heart while resting back onto the seat again. Her chauffeur driving past the gates of their home and her eyes going to the line of palm trees leading to their house. Having long hung up, Kaliyah waves at the driver as she hikes up the driveway. Gesturing back, he makes sure she gets in the house first before leaving.
Her body entering the home and the heels on her feet being thrown off in a matter of seconds. The corridor in front of her lit with a row of dim chandeliers and the space carrying a smell of vanilla and bergamot. Temple inclining on the door and a deep breath exiting her lungs, her head goes back to stare up at the high ceiling. Kaliyah hadn’t been here in days, she wasn’t able to enjoy the new house because of the threats striking in unexpectedly. “Where did he…?” Her eyes scanning the area for the record player, the tote over her shoulder gliding down after spotting it near the hallway. She drops it on the couch then races over to the instrument, her fingers holding onto the edge of the record as she sits it on the platform.
Delicately placing the needle down and being sure the volume was up all the way. The violins punch in alongside a piano, “remember that night? You remember?” She stands upright, the song echoing through the hallway and her hips rocking to the groovy rhythm. Singing the lyrics, she makes her way to the sofa to pick up her tote bag. “I ain’t gonna let you go that easy.”
“Hey.” Michael’s voice drowning out the music, Kaliyah turning to him with the strap in her hands. She shifts back and forth on her feet as their eyes remained on each other. “Can I—can I tell you something?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Those two days drove me crazy.”
“I know right, I don’t think we should do that again.”
“Agreed…you’re staying, the night? The next week, the next month, and the month after that—
“Oh my goodness, yes. Forget them.” He stuffs his hands in his pants pockets, a shy smile on his face as he makes a beeline to her. The fireplace going, usually tended by the maids when the two weren’t there. The flames reflecting on their faces as they come together, the light cackling of the fire popping.
“What did she give you?” Kaliyah chuckles then goes into her tote to pull out several random records. Smiling, he nods his head, his hand taking ahold of his own. “She has good taste.” She didn’t realize he pulled out her guilty pleasure, Lady in My Life, he hid it to his side as quick as possible.
“I know right, every time.”
“Do you mind if we put this one on?” The pads of her fingers graze his chest, he leans toward her, a magnetic aura pulling him in.
“Be my guest.” He did just that, going over to the record player and switching out the music for a few moments. Michael turning back to her, ambling to Kaliyah before stopping in front of her. The fireplace illuminated behind them and the energy building like a volcano about to erupt. The song seeping in, and Kaliyah’s face going blank. His body moving closer to her, eyes taking in every ounce of her presence. She could barely take it, the tension pulsating above them.
“About that letter.” Her cheeks flushing, making movements to pull the side of her skirt out. Her fingers reaching in by her hip to grab the folded piece of paper tucked behind the waistband of her panties.
“This one?” Kaliyah holds it between her fingers, dangling it in front of him, a closed smile coming on her mouth. The action setting him off, his arms tugging her in, they couldn’t fight back anymore. The paper flicked out her hand and onto the floor. The way they held each other becoming familiar to them, eyes on his, she gasps feeling his hands hoist her up effortlessly. Kaliyah’s legs encircling his hips and her arms holding onto his neck. He walks her to the couch, plopping down and her body jerking forward from the impact. They laugh gently, lips brushing one another as she clings to him.
She whimpers, Michael lifting up to kiss her softly but with crave lingering behind the action. His hands squeezing her bottom and the both of them moaning with contentment, his teeth sink into his bottom lip. “Touch me, baby, please.”
He pushes up her skirt, eyes on Kaliyah as she forces her shirt over her head. Before she could fully get it off, his mouth settling on her hard nipple. Sucking on her skin gently, then looking up for reassurance. Is this okay? He thought, and maybe it was context clues or a woman’s intuition but she nodded with low eyes. Michael’s head diving back into her cleavage, leaving charged kisses on her breast with trails of saliva to follow. “Oh, fuck.” Kaliyah’s voice breaking, her hands searching for his face and her hips swaying against him.
His tongue swirling, the sensitivity causing her to grab his wrist. It didn’t stop him from placing his hand between her thighs, the pads of his fingers slipping down her labia then stroking around her clit repeatedly. Saturated, they move at a slow pace, each motion making her breath hitch.
Kaliyah knew he was going to, and she wished he didn’t because she completely fell apart on top of him. Her voice calling his name as his lips moved to the other side of her chest, grazing her nipple with his teeth. Michael’s other arm anchoring her close to him, “baby, you’re so…you’re wet.” He mutters into her skin, beyond turned on, his member pressing onto his pants. She moves to unbutton them, he joins her and their movements became frantic. Kaliyah locking lips once more, her hands going to his jawline. “I just wanna make you feel good, Liyah.” He begs, speaking through their makeout, he wanted to give her his all.
She takes her time easing down on him, the both of them taken aback by the blissful feeling. Shivers shoot up her spine, causing her to involuntarily move forward. His moan breaching the kiss, he leans up to grasp her hips. Tongue sliding inside her mouth she sighs, grasping his shoulders as Michael’s hands guide her up and down his length unhurriedly.
Kaliyah could tell he was hesitant to go harder, she applies more pressure with each time her bottom slaps on his thighs. Her moans stumbling out the kiss and her back arching. Michael’s eyebrows crease, dipping down to run his lips across her neck. Stopping at one spot in particular, coasting his tongue over her skin then biting gently. It sent more goosebumps over her being, fingers skimming down his shoulders not knowing where to hold on to. He quickens her pace, a soft line of curses underneath her breath, eyes fluttering and her hand gripping onto his wrist. His length coated with Kaliyah and Michael’s eyes fixing on her, entranced.
Her head drops back and he draws her in tighter, “I missed you so much.” His hands controlling her hips, bringing her down on him as cries trickle from her lips.
Kaliyah becoming undone, moans turned to begging and hands scratching at his shoulders as he strokes the spot that’s been aching for weeks. “Look what you do to me, baby.” His hips beginning to move up and down, matching her pace and her chords releasing a string of high-pitched soughs. She couldn’t get her words out, her hand falling onto the neckline of his shirt. Their lips meeting desperately and her hips quivering, the feeling washing over her whole body. His name comes from her mouth, pure euphoria, again and again. Lips sweeping over his and Michael’s arms secured around her waist as he strokes smoothly inside her.
“Shit, Liyah.” Noticing her clenching around him, their moans sync, overshadowing his song competing with them.
“Let’s make this a night we won’t forget, girl, I need your sweet caress.”
He felt amazing and she didn’t want him to stop, they were connected, chills overtaking them as his motions became messy. “Oh, baby.” He groans, “you’re so beautiful.” She flows, her pot finally falling over, her honey leaking down his length and her shaky breathing going into his ear. Kaliyah’s hips rolling and lips parted, he pulls out of her and she gasps. His release spilling over his member she catches his lips in a kiss, his head rests back, fingers going loosely around her neck. Michael was speechless, his words getting coiled in his throat.
“Stay with me, I want you to stay with me.”
“I want it…all night long.” He felt his body igniting at the sultriness in her voice, his heart racing and their minds jumbled. Lying her on the couch, tugging her legs close to him, a smile sneaks onto Kaliyah’s face and her finger hooks around the waistband of his pants.
