I once read* that awe is usually triggered by entities whose magnitude is hard to be perceived at once by our cognitive systems, like the vastness of Grand Canyon, the abyssal depths of the ocean, or endless icy lands of the Poles. (below image)
Here is presented an audial recording which hints the vastness of space. I think what affects us is not the (almost-)incomprehensibility of the entity. I think the issue is that we, as a self-conscious individuals, are so used to focus on the surroundings of ourselves that our spatial apprehension shrieks to a micro-universe, self as the center. However, those guys help us to expand our dimensional perception, albeit momentarily, to the degree that we are not used to.
