winter stared down at the ultrasound photo in her hands, tears slipping quietly onto the glossy paper before she could stop them. she’d held herself together through the appointment, smiled politely at the nurse, and walked all the way outside before the sight of another couple celebrating in the parking lot finally broke whatever resolve she had left. beside her, summer’s voice was gentle.

it was a nice change of pace being with a man who can express what he wants, what he feels ⸺ even though once upon a time that man was not nathan scott. perhaps, there was truth in the saying that people can change.

summer had seen the worse of nathan. they'd been through so many highs and lows together . . . and apart. yet, somehow it ultimately ended with him in her bed again after so long. at the same time, it felt like no time had past at all. they fell right back into beat, still knowing every sensitive spot, every button to push . . . that spark ⸺ that magic is still very much alive.

the blonde plops up to her elbows, fingers holding over her chest the silky fabric that's threatening to expose her. pearly whites on full display as he speaks, the words resonating with summer. this feeling is unique and shared between the two. she hadn't felt so comforted and satisfied in a long time. now that she has ⸺ summer's not sure she can return to not feeling it. “ okay? ” she echoes with drawl. “ did i not do my job right last night? you should be feeling a lot more than okay. ” a playful grin, hands inkling to touch him . . . but she's not sure what this is . . . so they go nowhere. “ there's a lot more good to you than there ever was bad, nate. ”

a laugh escaped nathan before he could stop it. low and genuine, the kind that only seemed to exist around her. he rubbed a hand over the back of his neck, shaking his head as he glanced in her direction. “ you know that’s not what I meant. ” there was warmth in his voice, something easy that had been missing for longer than he cared to admit. “ trust me, i’m feeling a whole lot more than okay. ”

his eyes lingered on her for a moment before dropping to the floor, the smile softening into something quieter. a step back from his typical cockiness. she’d always had a way of making him feel seen, even back when he’d spent most of his life trying to be someone else. “ I think that’s the weird part, ” he confessed. “ I got so used to waiting for everything to fall apart that waking up and … not wanting to run feels almost foreign. ”

summer’s last words settled over him in a way he wasn’t prepared for. there was a time he would’ve brushed them off with a joke or argued until she gave up trying to convince him. instead, he reached over and bumped her shoulder gently with his own. “ you’ve always believed in me more than I deserved, ” he murmured. “ even when I was making it really difficult. ” a crooked grin returned to his face then, lighter now. “ and for the record, if this is you worrying whether you did your job right, i’m gonna have to insist we schedule a rematch just so I can prove my point. ” he paused, letting the joke that wasn’t a joke hang there before adding, quieter, “ i’m glad it was you, sum. I think it was always supposed to be you. ” carefully pulling her into his lap, not minding if those silk sheets fell away, lips trailing along her shoulder. “ how have I survived without you? without that?! ”

❝ the same man that claimed dashboard confessional was lame rock. ❞ one would think that, after fifteen years, peyton would've let that one go. apparently not. she could carry a grudge like it was an olympic sport, and letting jamie in on his dad's more embarrassing moments felt like karma finally throwing her a bone.

blonde eyebrows quirk as she settles onto the familiar gym bleachers, watching him go about whatever punishment-duty nathan had assigned him. ❝ y'know, your dad wasn't always the stand-up role model he is now. before your mom got ahold of him, he was kind of a douche. ❞ her expression turns thoughtfully mischievous, ❝ and trust me, i have enough material to traumatize you for years if i really wanted revenge. ❞ a beat, ❝ but i'm guessing there's some sort of a lesson here. your dad's big on those these days. probably because your grandpa wasn't. ❞ accountability wasn't exactly dan scott's specialty. peyton had spent years watching nathan run himself into the ground trying to please him, and if he messed up outside a basketball court, dan hardly seemed to care. that lesson came later — somewhere between haley james and finally growing up. ❝ so? what'd you do, little man? ❞

jamie let out a laugh at that, shaking his head as he dragged the rubbish bag a little farther across the edge of the river court before tossing another empty bottle inside. “ okay, first of all, that’s actually the most offensive thing i’ve heard all week! dashboard confessional is not lame rock, ” he informed her. “ and i’ve spent the last three days listening to my dad explain why actions have consequences. ” there was a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth despite the complaint. if there was one thing he’d inherited from nathan scott besides the height, it was the inability to stay serious for very long.

“ you know, it’s weird hearing stories about him from before. ” his gaze drifted over the familiar blacktop, taking in the faded lines and battered hoops. “ because to me, he’s just dad. the guy who hogs the remote and still thinks he can beat me one - on - one. ” another laugh escaped him. “ then somebody reminds me he used to be an idiot, and suddenly it all makes a lot more sense. ”

at her question, jamie paused mid - sweep, leaning against the broom handle with a sigh. “ I skipped tutoring. ” the admission came quietly, like maybe if he didn’t put too much emphasis on it, it wouldn’t sound so bad. “ there was this band playing over in wilmington, and I figured one session wasn’t going to kill anybody. ” he kicked absentmindedly at a loose soda can before dropping it into the bag. “ mom found out before I even got home, which meant dad found out about thirty seconds later. ”

his eyes flicked back to peyton, equal parts sheepish and amused. “ so now i’m spending my saturday cleaning up the river court because apparently if I had time to skip tutoring, i’ve got time to ‘ give something back to the place that gave our family so much. ’ ” he mimicked nathan’s voice just enough to make himself laugh before shrugging. “ I mean … I know he’s trying to teach me something. I just wish his lessons involved less manual labor and more … I don’t know … a strongly worded conversation. ”

granted, peyton had never been very good at hiding the whole perpetually-annoyed thing. that would've required actual effort, and most days, all her energy went into blasting music loud enough to drown herself out and sketching feelings she didn't know how to explain out loud. there wasn't much left after that for smiling on command.

then again, it wasn't like many people whose opinions she actually cared about had complained. other than brooke, whenever she needed a partner in crime to go raise hell somewhere. but that wasn't happening anytime soon.

one door in the shape of a decade-long friendship closes, a window to a kind smile and decent coffee opens. peyton had no clue why jake seemed to care enough to notice when something was wrong, despite her bad rep and general raincloud aura, but his smile had a way of making things feel a little lighter.

jake had always thought peyton wore her emotions the way some people wore old leather jackets. weathered, worn in, impossible to separate from the person underneath. she carried sadness with the same casual certainty most people carried keys or wallets, tucked into the pockets of every conversation without ever making a point of mentioning it. somehow, though, she still managed to smile every now and then, and when she did, it felt earned.

the laugh she coaxed out of him was quiet, accompanied by a shake of his head as he reached for one of the better mugs instead of the chipped ones stacked beneath the register. “ employee of the month comes with more responsibility than reward, ” he mused. “ karen would probably just make me clean the espresso machine twice. ” he slid the coffee toward her anyway, knowing she’d notice he’d forgotten to ring it up.

her words about brooke lingered longer than anything else. he knew enough about peyton to understand that pretending not to care was usually the clearest sign she cared too much. “ she’ll get there, ” he said simply, not because he knew it for certain but because she deserved someone willing to believe it. “ you don’t throw away years of history because things get messy. what even happened? ” his fingers tapped absently against the countertop before a softer smile found its way across his face. “ and if she really does want to murder you, i’m pretty sure karen keeps a first aid kit in the back. ”

at the mention of jenny, his expression shifted almost immediately, something lighter settling over him. “ she’s with karen tonight, ” he explained. “ apparently they had plans that involved finger painting and cookies, and I wasn’t invited. ” there was mock offense in his tone, but affection outweighed it by a mile. “ which means, unfortunately for you, I don’t actually need a babysitter. ” his eyes lifted to meet hers, warm despite the rain tapping steadily against the windows. “ but I could probably use the company if you want to stick around until the end of my shift. ” one glance down at his wristwatch before his gaze returned back to her. “ and i’ve got pie if coffee isn’t doing enough heavy lifting. ”

when shit hits the fan, he seeks comfort where he knows it best: from smurf, because she doles it out extra sweet for her boy. there are instances, though, where he knows better than to show up empty - handed when his mother is expecting something. there's little harder to swallow than smurf's bitter disapproval when a job goes south, and maybe that's why he finds himself on cath's doorstep. she never gives a shit about the money or the blood. her concern is genuine, and her tenderness ( which he deserves, not baz ) is abundant.

nostrils are flared. eyes are wild, bloody knuckles on full display where hands are balled into tight fists by his sides. footsteps are heavy, breaths uneven. head is on a swivel, even though this place is supposed to be safe. cath is supposed to be safe. we can't, andrew, has become a sentiment akin to i love you, andrew. pope only seems to snap out of his fugue state when his boot collides with a doll on the floor, gaze briefly dropping to examine the damage before seeking out a familiar face.

"she's asleep?" he rasps out, referring to the little one he loves as dearly as if she's his own blood. he deserves her, not baz. "thought i'd tuck her in, maybe. it'd be nice to see her." but it's better that he doesn't. not when he's like this. lena doesn't deserve to see him like this. he steps closer to cath, chin tilting upwards. stare is piercing, hot with intensity. "baz is at smurf's. probably'll be there for a while."

she’d learned a long time ago that the loudest versions of andrew cody were rarely the ones where he raised his voice. they were the nights he showed up like this, carrying something ugly beneath his skin that he couldn’t quite shake loose, looking everywhere except where he was supposed to. there was blood drying across his knuckles, tension wound so tightly through his frame that she wondered if he even realized he was still clenching his fists. he looked like a cornered animal more than a man, and catherine hated how familiar the sight had become.

her eyes followed his toward the hallway, expression softening at the mention of lena. “ she’s asleep, ” she answered quietly, almost reluctantly. there was almost an apology in it, knowing how much he adored the little girl, how often she’d catch lena waiting by the window when she knew pope was coming. “ finally wore herself out. ” the corner of her mouth tugged into something small. “ she asked if you were coming. wanted you to read the dinosaur book again. ” she let the words settle between them for a second before adding, gentler still, “ she’ll be happy to see you in the morning. ”

then he was closer, close enough that she could make out every scrape across his hands, every uneven breath leaving his chest. baz being at smurf’s explained more than he probably intended it to. maybe that was why he’d come here instead. maybe, for once, he’d wanted someone who looked at him before the blood and the mistakes. catherine swallowed against the thought before reaching for one of his fists, her fingers easing it open with patient care despite the resistance, thumb brushing lightly over split skin. “ hey, ” she whispered, waiting until he looked at her. “ you’re okay. you’re here. ” her other hand came up to rest briefly against his arm, grounding rather than restraining. “ come sit with me. i’ll get the first aid kit, make you some coffee … or tea, if you’d rather. whatever you need. ”

there wasn’t another question waiting behind the offer, no interrogation hiding beneath her concern. she could see he was carrying enough already. “ you don’t have to tell me what happened, ” she assured him softly, searching his face. “ not tonight. but you don’t have to carry it by yourself either. ” her fingers squeezed his hand once before she started guiding him toward the couch. “ just let me take care of you for a little while, andrew. please. ”
