Yamato’s morning had been going well— a bit too well actually. He’d woken up before his alarm, rolled over and gone back to sleep, which is always nice. His usually faulty shower which liked to freeze him before scalding him, was a good, consistent temperature, letting him relax in the shower. The kettle seemed to take half the time to boil, his breakfast seemed to taste better than usual and the traffic on the way to school was minimal. Something was wrong, very, very wrong.

In the staff room, he switched on the kettle, rummaging around in the cupboards for sugar when he heard the knocking on the door and the student announce themselves. Kyou Matsuda. He knew her name, knew her face and knew their connection, she was his niece-in-law. It was an unspoken law between the two of them, that they do not discuss family. As much as he always wanted to ask how they were doing, he refrained from doing so. When the time was right, he’d ask them himself.
But, when the door opened, there was something in her expression that made every alarm bell in his brain sound. Perhaps it was the way her hair was messy, so unlike it’s usual kept style. Maybe it was the fact that she was wringing her hands, making the skin go white. Or rather, it was her eyes, beginning to water and her lips beginning to tremble.
Yamato opened his left eye, the familiar sensation of his quirk running through his nerves as his eye shone blue. He saw what would happen, a tear would fall, she’d look anywhere but at him and she’d say it, her voice broken, raw and breathy, “ Grandma Mukai has passed away. ”
It took every ounce of strength left in him not to fall. His hands gripped onto the counter behind him as he shut her up with a single word, “ DON’T. ” if you don’t say it, it’s not true. He felt every emotion he’d kept under lock and key just vanish, he felt empty.
“ I am so so so sorry, ” Kyou spoke, tears falling from her eyes, seemingly blinding her.
“ You need to go. ” Yamato said curtly, his voice hard yet quiet. She left without another word.
If he was going to die with regrets, this is the biggest. His own mother, died not knowing how much he loved her, how sorry he was for cutting her out of his life, how wrong he was for doing that. Suddenly rage started piling in his stomach, climbing through his body, setting his nerves on fire. The next thing he knew, he’d thrown the sofa across the room, breaking the coffee table whilst he was at it.
If only he’d said sorry sooner. If only he’d picked up the phone and called. If only...

character in general: blake is probably one of yams favourite people to mess with? she’s tiny and ready to fight! but also yam 10/10 would fight for her? important thing to note about yam: if you look at the roots of his hair, you can see brown! he dyed his hair grey when he first started greying just because he didn’t want people constantly pointing out his greys. his beard on the other hand, is naturally grey with maybe one or two brown hairs.
yamato spent 3 months travelling the south of Europe, spending most of his time in Italy & Spain, enjoying the warm weather. however, he used so much sun block, he didn’t tan at all.
yamato went on his first ever blind date and, it wasn’t horrible! but it wasn’t good enough to make blind dates a normal occurrence.
he reconnected with his family, just in time to make it to his eldest nieces wedding. she looked beautiful and he totally cried, promising to be around a hell of a lot more.
after serious consideration, yamato put in an application to be a foster parent, he’s still waiting to hear back. in anticipation, he’s cleared out the spare room.
his front garden is filled with flowers which he has loving grown. he often lets the neighbours kids help him with the watering the plants but this often ends up in water fights, aka yamato getting soaked.
he’s never used his library card so much.
his facebook account is no longer inactive but, boy, is it a mess. it’s mainly photos that he’s tagged in and photos from his nieces wedding. if you dig through the wedding photos you can find a photo of teary eyed yamato.
