On a porch

Find myself doing less here as more interns arrive, more hands make less work. Guess I should blog more (nah if rather pick mangoes and kick it with Joshua only a week left). Moved into this really sketchy place next door hahah. Pops asked me if I had a tv to watch the confederations cup final I laughed pretty hard on the phone. I looked in the mirror for the first time in abt two weeks though, not much changed. I'm gonna miss this place but Ive been missing town too. So there's a trainer here, his name is Tom and he's a pretty experienced bee keeper that lives in Honduras. It's been nice to talk to him and here abt some of his experiences. Today's the first day but he seems pretty innovative and crafty which are good traits in his line of work (he teaches grade school kids too). This is his second time here and he'll be training a lot more people than last time. I hope he can learn a bunch from his visit too. It seems like Agape and Kwao are the medium that set this whole training operation up. They have it planned out pretty well abt every 2-3 days tom will visit a new parish and hold meeting with local bee keepers on things like making hives and pollen traps or even pest control.

Rum fi Duppy

I've had a couple funny experiences regarding tradition and folklore while living here. It makes me realize how old traditions make a culture interesting. One day Kwao and I were working on the framework for the new kitchen and the ladder he was standing on (with chain saw in hand) lost two rungs and he nearly fell off. After us both panicking and swearing a couple profanities he insited that Emmanuel (his eldest son) go and buy some white overproof rum (CJ's bestfriend, todays his birtday btw). It was tradition to sprinkle rum and have a couple drinks wherever you were working to pay respect to the duppies (ghosts) that might have been there a long time ago. He justified this by telling me a story of a man who insisted that everyone drink some rum before any work was started. That day we drank and sprinkled white rum under the hot sun, sounds like spring break.

A coupla days later Melchiezedek stepped on a shell as we were exploring the beach. I offered to loan him one of my shoes since the bottom of his foot was cut open. Without even thinking about it he replied "you caan wear one shoe, dat means one of yuh parents aguh dead". (I can't wear one shoe that means one of my parents will die.) I did the most intense double take, that was the last thing I expected to hear. He even looked at me like I was supposed to know that. I'm definitely passing this one on to the next person I see wearing one shoe.

Goes to show how certain traditions, however believable they might be has lived on in certain cultures. Who are we to say what makes sense and what doesn't.

Soap making is really easy, I'm definitely gonna do it in the apartment next year. Probably watch fight club afterword and date My roommates to play with the lye (kidding). The process is an art itself and there are many options depending on what kind you want. We've been making really cliche combinations though like honey orange, I'm down for the weird like coffee or coconut.

Kids

Being here I've been able to put a lot together about kids and how different people raise different kids. Honestly people need to stop telling their kids that they need to go to school to learn and be successful. These five boys have there brains filled with beneficial life skills that will get them by and allow them to be happy also. It makes me happy to see kids that are not influenced by all the bullshit that comes along with socializing at school. (Although they might have difficulties talking to girls latr down the rd lol).Im happy they won't be wasting they're time siting in a classroom bullshitting papers and tests just to move up in the system. With that said I can ramble on about how college is both a good and bad investment but that's for a drunken night. Don't get me wrong school benefits everyone, but these kids are more practical and technically capable than many at they're age.
