Some notes on Damia

Albert: Do you know about the Legend of the Mermaid? Emille: No.... Please tell me about it. Albert: The king of some country is gazing out over the waves of the sea and thinking his life is hollow, just like the vanishing bubbles. Everything looked like that because the king didn't know true love. Under the waves, a mermaid was thinking the same thing while gazing at the clouds in the sky. Emille: Oh my... And what happened to the two of them? Albert: Would you like to know? This is a secret story handed down only within the Serdio royal family, so...I cannot tell you anymore. Oh... I'm sorry I cannot go on. Emille: Oh! You are teasing me! *Chuckle*... But I am having a fabulous time. I didn't notice the passing of time when I'm talking with you.

This little bit of folklore is kind of a puzzlement to me as far as LoD lore goes. Until one of the other people on tumblr mentioned it, I hadn't even considered that it might have been intended by the game writers to be a reference to Damia. On the one hand, she's the only (part) mermaid character ever depicted in the game. On the other hand, mermaids as a race seem plentiful, as random encounter monsters.

But is Albert (and the game) hinting at a connection between Damia and the Serdian royal family...?

There is an additional detail about Damia in the Japanese guidebook that might or might not be relevant. As translated by the (now-defunct) LoD fansite "Closer To The Sky," Damia was

small-statued at 147 centimetres tall. Damia's father was human however her mother was a mermaid and from them she inherited the an ability superior to that of humans. During a time when birth persecution existed, Damia was terribly disliked. Holy Emperor Diaz noticed her and started her training as a knight, but later she became a Dragoon.

Damia as a teeny-tiny knight, handpicked by Emperor Diaz? What a fascinating idea! Relevant? Who knows!

These are the kinds of things we might know if only they re-released an updated version of the game!
