Happy birthday undertale 💛
The monotony And the rising tide Is under my skin, is crawling inside Adrenaline to rewire my mind I’m only human, I come with knives
Agar lightly smiles… ah, this one’s got the family’s attitude towards royals, or any authority it seems. And the tounge willing to bark back.
“ You’re speaking to who waged war against yours, what do you expect truly? Unlike this one, I don’t go about life playing charades. “ The green clothed man rolls his eyes at the comment, letting a small trail of smoke leave his nostrils. Then moves to seat with a reasonable distance to them. “ Perhaps, but you have that same… irking stare of his, if not his attitude sometimes, mingled with Toriel and Asgore’s. And if I am honest, I thought you would have figured it easily, but then… I guess it is a rather subttle thing… and given how long has it been since mages and monsters had truly exchanged such cultural and formative details of one another, I am not surprised it might have slipped you entirely, more so due to… predjudices “
Then the smile is gone from the red mage rather quickly, as is his amusement. replaced with a more neutral one, thought of neutral it had nothing. He takes seat near the former king, a little behind the other man, but less out of cultural customs of theirs and more about having a clear shot at the back of the head of the other wraith. As the monster royal was not the only one with their patience being tested, though in his case there is hardly much of that, or its similars, these days.
“ You may have your guesses perhaps, from seeing monsters and their attacks. Training ,and healing the wound of the soul, are not the only things able to raise one’s stats, or alter them… you have seen this while fighting, have you not? Not only have they altered the range of movement, or temporaly taken any chance to flee. Allow me to demostrate, don’t dodge this, you will see soon enough what I mean. “ The wraith speaks once more, letting his arm raise in their direction. A soft flame forming for the lightest of moments, then such is shot almost like a beam towards their direction. If met its mark the sensation of his magic would be… somewhat unpleasant, electric, acidic in a way and perhaps a tad too hot for the comfort of most. A fire close enough to sting, but not enough to burn and damange. “ Magical enchancements, buffings as some say today with these… games they often speak of. Temporal enhancements for different things, the current one I have placed is for exactly that, your defense, if you view yours stats, the number should have rised at the least ten points or so as I had intended. Though the spell I could strenghten to rise them many times fold, this is merely a demostration… and I have… doubts on how it could affect you, as I can imagine even in this tamed demostration… my magic shouldn’t be the most pleasant to feel still… nor is the most benevolent. “
“ That should give you context as to why the war didn’t last as long, as many others before it did, and perhaps a little… intel, on who you will keep eye on. “ The red mage continues. “ It is safe to asume the orders still know of this, though I doubt ever since they have been able to come close to what we were capable of, in our kingdom at least the closest they had come to had been to the power of 4 of us united. And even then they weren’t efficient at such. But… back to our matter, after you check that you should pretty much close your eyes. “ He gestures to his eyes, tapping near them lightly, before closing one eye. “ And while I can understand you to be wary, and tense, I will have to ask you to relax and ease your mind. It will make easier this lesson for you, so breathe. Take this… as an incentive, if you do astoundingly well, we may jump to teach you perhaps another more practical and usefull mean of rising your defenses… on a father future we shall see the means to break them too. “
“ Our barrier had been impervious to all but the god-like, as example. As expected in a way. “ The white haired man says, shaking his head. “ Shields and barriers will too have weak spots, however we will teach you how to spot them and reinforce the spells to ensure maximum defenses, in time. First… it will be the basics. ”
Chara listens intently to the king’s explanation, despite the disdain still evident in their eyes and downcurled mouth. They could understand their ancestor’s irritation towards the former monarch, and they once again wonder why the other mages gathered under this one’s banner in the first place. He was corrupt and hollow, crude and acerbic. But, despite the prince’s feelings, they knew that they would benefit from his teachings, and they knew that if they wanted to be strong enough to defend their family from the humans and the modern magi orders, they needed a higher defense.
They brace themself as the king’s magic makes contact. They grit their teeth and swallow a groan. It wasn’t the worse pain they had endured, certainly; nothing could compare to the agony of having one’s soul feel the impact of their beloved brother’s destruction. However, it still is far from pleasant. Their skin crawls and burns, and they resist the urge to scratch the point of contact raw.
Still, it worked. Their defense had risen to 11/11.
Why do they feel like they made a deal with the devil?
They make a mental note to explore another avenue of raising one’s stats. Although it was certainly effective, and a part of them is grateful at the boost, they do not want to feel the king’s magic again. It makes them feel... dirty, stained.
They square their shoulders and glance at their ancestor, the one that they feel slightly more comfortable listening to. They are alike, after all, and Chara feels that they can predict his motivations more than the hollow monarch’s.
Their eyes reluctantly close, and they force their upper body to relax. “I haven’t been able to breathe in decades, but thank you for the encouragement,” they tease, a self-directed attempt to make themself relax further.
“A good point, a walk it is then.” To see an attempt at a smile brought one of his own over his lips, one of the more genuine. Not his usual camera flashing grin. Just a soft simple one.
How long had it been since he’d been around a little kid? It felt longer than it probably had been. It was hard to consider Frisk a child at a times. when they were doing so many adult things. with help of course but still.
But Chara…they tended to speak maturely..but the energy around them still felt..like a child. Maybe he was strange in his way of thinking, but then again when wasn’t he?
Blinking at the expression of gratitude, he tilted his head to one side. something about that sentence bothered him. more than he’d care to admit. most monsters don’t? How many times…..had they been expecting some company only to be disappointed?
“It’s not a problem at all darling. I know I didn’t have to come, I wanted to come. I’m sure your mother didn’t expect me to say yes either. I’m not surprised, most expect me to be constantly busy and unable to lend my supposed ‘precious’ time to others.”
“So I think today’s a good day for us both to go out and enjoy time together, don’t you? Maybe I can earn my way to being a friend rather than a ‘sitter’.” he snickered, with a playful wink of his eye.
Chara would have regretted that unintentional revealing of their true vulnerability if it weren’t for the other’s playful response. This time a true smile did bloom; it softened their haggard expression and revealed a dimple that made them look far younger. They glanced downward somewhat bashfully before replying, “Now that is where you’re mistaken, Mettaton. I already consider you a friend.”
The first fallen child did not bestow loyalty lightly, but those who were kind enough to peer beyond the whispered rumors and their telling stats would always have a place in Chara’s scarred soul. It was all they had ever wanted: friends and family. People who would neither harm them nor leave.
As they approached the door’s threshold, they briefly worried the inside of their cheek before deciding to tentatively offer their hand. Mettaton could take it then, if he wished.
“And I am glad you managed to escape the hustle and bustle for a moment. It must be... tiring, having to perform and be surrounded by so many people.” Still, Chara recognized what a service Mettaton had done for the underground after their and their brother’s deaths. He provided a much needed distraction and, most likely, prevented more monsters from falling down. In Chara’s eyes, he was a hero.

Chara: I sure do laugh a lot for someone who's dead on the inside.
“Both hm? Alright, sounds like a wonderful plan to me.” He smiles, giving a nod of his head when the other seems to understand his reasoning behind trying to get them out of the house. being a recluse himself he knew better than most that staying inside all the time tended to have it’s affects on the mind. Especially with a lack of socializing.
But that was fine! He would fix it and things could slightly improve for today. “That sounds nice, enjoying some ice cream under the cherry blossoms and taking in the nice cool breeze. another wonderful idea.” He considers it for a moment on which would be easier, and while part of him wanted to be head in charge like usual that approach simply wouldn’t do.
Standing up with a stretch he turned on his heel, bending at the hip slightly “So Chara! What mode of transportation are we taking today hm? Limo for a flashy entrance, Taxi for silent creeping around, or a nice little walk? I’ll leave the choice up to you since it’s your special day.”
Though technically it was just a regular day, nothing special about it. But He dubbed it to be their special hang out day where they got to just be a kid for awhile make silly decisions, have fun, and just have a watchful responsible adult around to make sure that they didn’t get hurt or something else bad.
He after all, was a responsible person when he put his mind to it. So how hard could this be!
It didn’t take Chara long to make their decision. They had always been a creature of the wild and, if they could avoid unwanted attention, they would. Even when they had to make a public appearance due to their status as a royal, they would linger in corners and hide their face from photographers. It was one thing if the attention was from someone they trusted, but they simply couldn’t abide being gawked at.
“I’d very much like to walk, if that’s all right with you,” they replied. They cracked a weak smile. “Why waste gas when we’ve perfectly good legs, after all?”
They were struck by the morning’s sudden surreal quality. They’d never had a proper childhood on the surface, and only a mere taste of one whilst living underground, so to have Mettaton stop by like this was akin to looking at someone else’s life through a screen. There’s the happy child, excited to leave the house on their impromptu school ditch day. And there’s the indulgent uncle, who knows just the right things to say to buoy their spirits.
They had an urge to grab onto his hand too as they walked. Childish, they knew, but they supposed that it was the sleep deprivation talking.
Instead of acting on that embarrassing impulse, however, they merely said, “Thank you, by the way. I know my mom asked for you, but you really didn’t have to come. Most monsters... don’t.”
His passive grin twitched again, unable to help feeling impressed when his rapid-fire play on words was answered in kind, the comic couldn’t remember the last time someone had been able to match him in that regard.
Snowdrake tried, but his attempts had always left him feeling a little.. cold.
Still.. he couldn’t forget that this was his enemy, regardless of their inspiring ability to string horrid puns together.
Never forget what they’ve stolen from you.
His neutral mask threatened to slip yet again, but this time, under the influence of the undercurrent of rage that their words had stirred up in him, the sharp, frosty light within his sockets accentuating the shadows beneath.
They were tired?
If he hadn’t been doing his utmost best to keep his turbulent emotion under wraps, he would have either laughed in their face, or attempt to cast judgement on them right then and there, even if their ability prevented him from truly carrying out their much deserved sentence.
When was the last time he’d gotten a decent night’s sleep? When he hadn’t woken in a cold sweat, either from the unspeakable nightmares, or the paranoia that he’d been shoved back Underground, forced to replay the same events, with no end in sight?
His tire went beyond the physical, an exhaustion that dragged on his very soul, he was so very tired.. of watching his loved ones, the true heroes of their story be cut down without mercy.. useless until it was far too late to stop them..
A pointless, cowardly judge, unable to carry out even his singular purpose..
What good was he to anyone?
A shaky hand moved to cover the faint wisp of blue licking from his socket, slouched forward with his elbows pressed to his kneecaps, not even entertaining the possibility the other had hinted toward.
The idea that anything could ever have permanence, was just too much for him to even consider.
Laughable.. if he didn’t feel so shattered inside..
‘..fine kid. the steaks are high, but.. i’m.. listenin’..’
Chara snuck a glance at Sans out of the corner of their eyes before immediately fixating on the ground. They could still feel the crackle of his magic in the air, an indicator of just how much they were pushing it by confronting him like this.
“Thank you,” they murmured, sounding more like a meek child than the centuries old anomaly they knew they were. A finger silently tapped over the locket heart as they collected their thoughts. Very well. They’d be quick, concise.
“I don’t know how many stories you’ve heard about my life, since you were a bit before my time, but I can attest that most of them held grains of truth. I came to the mountain for an... unhappy reason, much like Frisk. There was nothing for me on the surface: no family, no hope. So, when I finally received that from Toriel and Asgore, it changed me. The love and acceptance. I resolved to do whatever it took to free monsterkind, even if it meant offering up my own life.”
They worried the inside of their cheek and continued to tell Sans what all other stories had left out: “I was fifteen. Old enough to know better, perhaps. I--... I poisoned myself and coerced Asriel into absorbing my soul. We crossed the barrier, and I pointed out to him the six we could take. They were cruel, cowardly people. You could see the malice on their souls. No one would miss them. But Asriel... couldn’t. We were attacked and, no matter how much I screamed at him to defend himself, he still chose to do nothing. At the end of it all, we both died.”
“Things may suggest that I am a monster by blood, but I was not raised as one of your people. I do not feel that I truly have a claim, not enough of one to count. Perhaps it shall change in time, but for now…”
Though Kara did feel as if she was being quite naive by seeking somewhere to belong the young abomination could not help it. She’d caught a taste of something she’d only dreamed of. No matter how hard Kara tried she couldn’t keep herself from searching, not this time.
The moment that they mentioned meeting the king Kara froze just a little. Yes, she had understood that Chara was a prince, but it had not truly registered, and the thought of meeting someone with such authority worried her.
A feral street child had no business receiving aid from those with royal blood, and surely there would be further questions and concerns.
Still, perhaps it could be avoided, so long as she was careful and did little to reach out. Social situations were not her forte, never had been, and she would rather not make a mess of things. Wringing her hands with enough force to break human bone she kept her eyes trained on the ground, not wanting to move for fear of making a mistake.
“There are plenty of suitable trees for both sleep and for food. I do not wish to invade your home, or to disturb your father. There is no need.”
As soon as the other avoided her gaze and wrung her hands, Chara began to regret their over-exuberance; it wasn’t their intention to make her uncomfortable. Long incisors worried the inside of their cheek as they carefully chose their next words. There were distinct differences between their childhoods, true, but Chara knew better than anyone what it was like to have that sense of pessimism, that any good thing could easily be rescinded.
“My father will be disturbed regardless if I undertake a journey without notifying him, and some things will best be explained with you with me. We... do not have to tell him everything, of course.” Then Asgore would insist that the eldest prince take the Royal Guard with them, and Chara did not want their dust on their hands in case things took a turn for the worst. “Just that you are of monster heritage and that I will be taking you back to the underground.”
They canted their head to the side. “And, logically, would we not work best when we are well rested? Monster food does wonders for restoring one’s health. At least let us give you that. Then, if you wish, we may both sleep outside.”
Chara was no stranger to that. They hadn’t the fingers and toes to count how many times they shocked their parents by stumbling back indoors late in the afternoon, twigs in their tresses and soil on their bare feet.

Chara’s normally harsh gaze softens further, and their arms ache to embrace the lonely prince, especially once they see that tears have welled in his eyes. However, the last thing they want is to invade his space or frighten him away. So they continue to stand there and offer advice in gentle, motherly tones, their soul aching all the while.
Their younger sibling, Kris, couldn’t give them the full story, but he alluded to enough that Chara was able to piece together just how Lancer had been treated.
“I know this might be difficult to hear. You love your father, and I don’t fault you for that.” When Chara was younger, they might have claimed the same of their own human progenitor, at least before he twisted them to hate. “But you are a good person. You deserve to be surrounded by people who care for you and allow you to be yourself, people that won’t hurt you whenever they’re angry.”
They pause, uncertain if it is their place, before continuing, “Perhaps it would be best... if your father stays locked away. It will give both of you some time to think. You can still see him, of course, if you have someone you trust with you, and in the meantime you can busy yourself with helping the Darkners--” A tentative, twitch of a smile. “--and spending time with us. You know Susie would never say no to spending time with you.”
