The Wee Free Men, Terry Pratchett
Tried to recreate The Lighthouse from Dragon Age: The Veilguard in Tiny Glade. I enjoyed the challenge of doing an entire build floating but I was frustrated that I couldn’t pull off a better approximation of what’s in the game.
Once again he’s got me weeping
For my 2nd full TinyGlade I’ve had a crack at the Unseen University from Discworld
I enjoyed the process a lot and learned a fair bit about Tiny Glade in the process. I still couldn’t pull off the Octiron Gate or the clock tower but I think that would be tricky even for someone with superior TG skills (although someone on YouTube made Minas Tirith so maybe not).
YouTube stuck this in front of my face yesterday and now I’m on pins waiting for an opportunity to get “to what end” (TO-WHAT-END) into a conversation. Well played algorithm, well played
I saw a Stay ‘n’ Play Cozy Games video yesterday that showed how to create floating platforms in Tiny Glade and it made me wonder if i could make a hot air balloon. Turns out the answer is yes and, while it’s not perfect, I’m actually pretty pleased with it
"BG3's main theme is familial abuse, so all storylines are about generational cycles of abuse."
Meanwhile, the Elturel refugee crisis happening in the background. Entire questline devoted to manipulating the news and creating propaganda. The Absolute being a brainwashing monstrosity from a species of alien slavers that is disguised as a new, revolutionary religion that is actually three cults in a trenchcoat. People actively choosing to get mindwiped to ignore the war and suffering happening around them. A legendary hero revealed to be a monster who manipulates people's minds and has erased all their humanity in exchange for power and is urging you to follow the same path. Entire city gives absolute power and surrenders political autonomy to an obviously shady guy because they are in a heightened state of fear.
Are you certain you really can't think of another theme this huge game tackles other than generational cycles of abuse?
Looking up Discworld quotes and it's always so fun because one quote will be like
"Homo Sapiens? You could keep it."
And the next one will be
"LORD, WE KNOW THERE IS NO GOOD ORDER EXCEPT THAT WHICH WE CREATE... THERE IS NO HOPE BUT US. THERE IS NO MERCY BUT US. THERE IS NO JUSTICE. THERE IS JUST US. ALL THINGS THAT ARE, ARE OURS. BUT WE MUST CARE. FOR IF WE DO NOT CARE, WE DO NOT EXIST. IF WE DO NOT EXIST, THEN THERE IS NOTHING BUT BLIND OBLIVION. AND EVEN OBLIVION MUST END ONE DAY. LORD, WILL YOU GRANT ME JUST A LITTLE TIME? FOR THE PROPER BALANCE OF THINGS. TO RETURN WHAT WAS GIVEN. FOR THE SAKE OF PRISONERS AND THE FLIGHT OF BIRDS. LORD, WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR, IF NOT THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?"
And now I'm crying because of one man's overwhelming love for humanity and the fact that he wrote 44 books in which one of the overarching themes is just... take care of one another. Even the bad ones.
It’s difficult to fully articulate the hold that Patrick Stewart had on audiences when TNG was airing. Between the hundreds of magazine covers, the talk show circuits, and the paparazzi nonsense, the amount of baldness puns editors were compelled to create was astounding.
It was like the media fixated on this man because he had catastrophic levels of charisma and audiences were losing their minds over him (TNG was regularly beating network shows in ratings), yet he was so far removed from the narrow Hollywood standards of beauty that it vexed and haunted these people for years.
Baldness was a joke in Hollywood. 75% of George Costanza's identity revolved around bald jokes. If you were a bald actor, you were cast as a villain or a buffoon, never the hero. And if you were losing your hair, you had to slap a wig on or risk losing your career. Yul Brynner was somewhat of an exception but he was from a much different generation of Hollywood and even Bruce Willis didn't fully shave his head until 1994 (post TNG success incidentally).
In Patrick Stewart's case, there was often an undercurrent of snide putdowns with many interviewers, drawing focus to his baldness over and over and over again with low hanging jokes. It was like you could see their vanity-based paradigms cracking in real time and it was strange to witness. Imagine how bizarre it would be if talk show hosts today could only ask The Rock, Vin Diesel, or Jason Statham about their bald heads.
But karma swooped in to the rescue. In 1992 Stewart was voted TV Guide's "Sexiest Man on Television" with a whopping 54% of votes. He beat out the likes of Luke Perry, John Corbett, A. Martinez, and even Burt Reynolds (with a total of 20 contenders).
The middle-aged bald guy in the syndicated sci-fi show beat out the hottest of the Hot Guys™️ and it wasn't even remotely close.
^ Bald joke
So yeah, today he's an old, revered thespian who is occasionally Charles Xavier, but not only did Patrick Stewart pave the way for other bald actors to be considered leading men, he discombobulated Hollywood with his unconventional attractiveness and it was amazing.

Some PTerry quotes that feel especially salient at the moment:
"He asked you to shoot at people who weren’t shooting back,” growled Vimes, striding forward, “That makes him insane, wouldn’t you say?”
“They are throwing stones, Sarge,” said Colon.
“So? Stay out of range. They’ll get tired before we do."
- Night Watch
Odd thing, ain't it... you meet people one at a time, they seem decent, they got brains that work, and then they get together and you hear the voice of the people. And it snarls.
- Jingo
It always embarrassed Samuel Vimes when civilians tried to speak to him in what they thought was “policeman.” If it came to that, he hated thinking of them as civilians. What was a policeman, if not a civilian with a uniform and a badge? But they tended to use the term these days as a way of describing people who were not policemen. It was a dangerous habit: once policemen stopped being civilians the only other thing they could be was soldiers.
- Snuff
The poor devils. They thought a king would make them free.
- Feet of Clay
Beating people up in little rooms…he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you’d do it for a bad one. You couldn’t say “we’re the good guys” and do bad-guy things. Sometimes the watching watchman inside every good copper’s head could use an extra pair of eyes.
- Thud!
Buffy has so much grace. She was kicked out of her own home and abandoned by her best friends in the middle of an apocalypse. Her friends then walk into a death trap. She saves them and immediately acts like nothing ever happened. No "I told you so", no grudges. She really is the bigger person and there's a reason she's in charge.
