German Director Volker Schlondorff wanted Phoenix to star as tortured young French poet Arthur Rimbaud in an adaptation of Henry Miller’s Time of the Assassins. As soon as River started reading Miller’s book he was stunned, as the book about the tragic nineteenth-century artist could easily have been his own life story. “That book was River,” said his friend Nick Richert. “He totally related to it and became obsessed.” From then on Phoenix would carry the book around with him, often reading key parts he had marked to his friends. Seeing himself as an artist, River was captivated by the 1946 book about Rimbaud, who saw the civilized world as a jungle and did “not know how to protect himself in it”. Like Rimbaud, River Phoenix felt like one of “the free spirits, who are the tormented ones- born out of time and out of rhythm.” Rimbaud was himself a child prodigy, who lived his life determined to experience everything. “He drives himself inhumanely. The goal is always beyond,” wrote Henry Miller. Like Phoenix more than a century later, Rimbaud wanted to, “see all, feel all, exhaust everything, explore everything, say everything.” Rimbaud burned himself out when he was just nineteen after three searing years when he “exhausted whole cycles of art”. After reading and rereading the Time of the Assassins, River Phoenix launched into hyper-drive with his music as if sensing he did not have much time left. “One of the things in the book that I think River recognized was how some poets and artists live with so much energy that they die at an early age”, says Nick Richert. “It was as if they had just so much to say and that once they had spent it, they died” - Lost In Hollywood: The Fast Times and Short Life of River Phoenix (1995)
Hi! I was wondering if you know what books River liked and maybe what kind of music he listened to, like what bands or artists. I'm sorry if you answered this already. Also i want you to know that i love your blog and i love your work! Thank you, have a great day! <3
Thanks! I’ve answered the music question in detail here and as for books, here’s an excerpt from a 1988 article:
“The novels he’s read, or would like to read, are those that kids grew up on 15 and 20 years ago: Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger, Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha, Richard Bach’s Illusions, Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.”
He also loved Diet for a New America which was like the og vegan book. One of the reasons he appeared on Donahue was because he loved that book and wanted to promote it’s message alongside the author. There’s James Gleick’s Chaos, Tolstoy’s War and Peace, The Basketball Diaries [he also wanted to star in the film adaptation] and John Rechy’s City of Night [which he read to prep for Idaho]. He was also obsessed with Time of the Assassins - I’ve made a post before, if you’re curious, about Rivers relationship with the book

Hi! I'm going on a trip to Los Angeles soon and I was wondering if you could give me any kind of hot spots that River may have frequented during his time there, such as favorite restaurants, shops, etc.?
The only restaurants I know of are The Great Greek on Ventura Blvd (he used to hang out there a lot with Martha when they were together) and Leonor’s in North Hollywood (Rain recently made a post about his connection to Leonor’s). He usually stayed at the St. James Club (now the Sunset Tower Hotel, same place and building just different name) or the Chateau Marmont. But in the last few days of his life he stayed at the Hotel Nikko (now Le Meridien ** Apparently it’s now closed). The Chateau Marmont is also where the shoot he and Keanu did for Interview Magazine by Bruce Weber took place

>> how to take lecture notes, and how to keep them pretty.
the most difficult thing in college, especially in liberal arts, is the amount of lecture notes i have to take! of the 8 classes i have this semester, 6 are lectures from the start to the end of class, and i promise you that my hand will always be sore by the end of the day.
