One of my favorite things about Gyro and Johnny both being such massive fucking assholes to pretty much everyone around them, is that Johnny actually sort of gets away with it, but every single person they encounter just fucking hates Gyro.
Like, they're both rude, they're both brash, they're both incredibly unpleasant in their own ways. They operate solely inside of their own little antisocial bubble- wherein they are the only two individuals who could reasonably coexist, but from the outside people generally still seem to at least initially like Johnny. He is frequently mistaken as being the more agreeable of the two, and it's almost entirely because he undoubtedly has some form of PR training that informs him on when to shut the fuck up, whereas Gyro just compulsively antagonizes anyone and everyone.
It makes it so much funnier when, over the course of the race, Johnny is revealed to be far more likely to kill with zero remorse (over even minor inconveniences) while Gyro's dual professions have made him hesitant to play fast and loose with his humanity. Johnny might exhibit a greater capacity for empathy, but it's Gyro who consistently demonstrates a deeper understanding for the inherent value of human life, and it's part of why they're such fun and necessary partnership.
They really balance each other out and bring a very "I can fix him"/ "I can make him worse" to this steel ball run race that I just find delightful.
