☀︎ CAMERON LUCIANI. he/him. thirty. co-owner of forno luciani. michael evans behling.
it wasn't that the male disliked sweets, or that the italian pastries forno luciani produced weren't some of the best on the island, but more so a routine that was difficult to break. he indulged sometimes, whenever jalila pouted enough that he conceded to her every wish. that was the only time though. that was the only person who could interrupt a carefully created way of being. snorts into his breakfast, the response one he already was aware of. he'd never seen rhys luciani here earlier than one minute before his shift unless cameron was dragging him in by the shirt. “ obviously i'm digging for gossip, ” what the fuck else would he want to speak of this early in the morning? the weather forecast? highly doubted that solemare had been uneventful for the male, it never seemed to be that way for anyone. “ will it make you feel better if i share first? ” rolls his eyes, stuffing another large bite into his mouth.
"beyond the fact that aniyah kassir threw vodka down my shirt, i don't have that much gossip to share, sorry to disappoint." the words come out of his lips nonchalantly, a stark opposition to how he actually feels about the whole thing. it's his eyes that betray him, annoyance and irritability flashing through them. either way, his friend was always too observant and over the past two years, they've grown to know each other well, so the attempt at nonchalance is futile. so much of his history with aniyah was a secret, to a suffocating degree, that it feels somewhat freeing that he doesn't have to hide how he's felt about her for the past few years. it's twisted, that he couldn't show it when things were positive and good and promising. still, that freedom was incomplete, when no one was aware of the real reason behind the animosity. santi's words have him quirking his eyebrow in curiosity. "oh? now you have to share. keep going."
a sound of pure despair leaves him as soon as he hears cameron's voice. he turns away, thin blanket covering his head, face pressed so hard into the pillow he wondered if he might mold into this position and never get up. wouldn't that be nice ? except rhys knows his brother better than he knows himself; this is a losing battle. counts to two in his head before he sits up, glaring. " do you mind ? i'm trying to wallow and build up this whole depressive state and you're getting in the middle of that. " not to mention the constant, neverending ache in his head. as if lani had given her piece of him back and now it was crawling to get back out, hating the fact that it has to be whole again. the least he can do is look cameron in the eyes, though, and so he forces himself to. " i really don't want to go boating, cam. i don't want to do anything. please. "
"actually, i do mind. you're not going to be wallowing in despair and self-hatred on my watch. it's not helping anyone and most of all it's not helping you." it's not his brother's first time spiraling when it comes to lani. cameron has noticed time and time again that more often than not, rhys's emotions were directly linked to whatever was going on between him and jahlani swaby, which is why the whole situation has him on edge, alarm ringing in his head. as difficult as the situation was, he was sure the pair were going to make up eventually. however, till that time comes, he needed to make sure rhys doesn't full on break down and lose himself in the process. "this isn't up for discussion. we're going boating and that's final," he says, tone definitive. "it's been a while since we did that, don't you miss it?" he folds his arms across his chest, scrunching his nose. "you kind of stink too, so take a shower first."
she can't ignore the fact that cameron has been bringing out a different side of her. one that enjoys silly things like a silent disco party, or one that actually considers trying to surf even though she has zero prior knowledge. perhaps this is why she was looking for his attention. maybe that would spark a bit of recklessness in the whitmore girl. " that's what i thought. " she says proudly, watching him as he gets her an additional cappuccino and cannoli. " i simply cannot take another one. " she shakes her head in disbelief, yet that ever so soft and cheery smile on her lips. " i will be bouncing off walls if i drink this cappuccino. " she laughs softly. " your presence will do this time around. "
"you think i'll argue with a customer? no chance in hell," cameron teases. he's not used to elodie being in such a playful mood, but he'll take it. it's amusing and he enjoys a little back and forth. he could also use a little break considering he's been on his feet for hours on end. everything seems to be running smoothly in the bakery at the moment. "so what, i'll be the only one drinking a cappuccino? that's against the rules, elodie." he reaches to take one cannoli for himself, chuckling at her words before his brows furrow in mock offense. "hold up. is my presence normally not enough?"
"Cameron, what will your loyal patrons say when you're not getting that extra hour and your skin isn't glowing the same as ever? You know half these people are coming in here to get a glimpse of you behind the bar," she teases, and she's only half-joking— can't even blame 'em! "But, fine, fine, you caught me, I am not an early bird," she sighs in defeat, feigning dramatics when they both know neither believed otherwise for even a second. Her dramatics end quickly, perking up as soon as he's describing the pastry, her lips spreading in a grin. "Oh, that sounds perfect right now, Cam. Can I grab that and an iced latte?" She could, of course, go to Dolce Vela for her coffee, but she'd rather spend more time in the bakery. "The crowd, yeah," Shae answers quick, and it's kind of the truth. "There's just... so many people." A brow quirks up, giving him a questioning grin. "I didn't take you for a Dua Lipa fan. Are you bringing a sign?"
cameron lets out a laugh, his head falling back in the process. "are you saying i'll look like shit if i don't get that extra hour of sleep? and here i thought people came for the great pastries..." he says, shaking his head in faux disappointment. "took you long enough. though, i suppose if you have no reason to be up so early, why should you? i would tell you try and catch the sunrise sometime but i won't even go there." as much as he liked a crowd, the morning quiet was something to appreciate. "you got it." he reaches for the pastry, placing it on a plate and handing it to shae, before working on her iced latte. "that's solemare for you. it's not too bad once you get used to it," he points out. "well she's only the most beautiful woman i've ever laid eyes on, so..." he trails off. "and no, no sign. do you think she'll notice me in the crowd without one?"
" what! " the lines in her forehead try to crease, but her fresh shot of botox doesn't allow her to, instead her lips are pursed out, staring at the brand new ac unit. " what do we do with it! maybe you can give it to one of your customers! the heatwave is like sooooooo bad and i love doing charity work! i'm like so into philanthropy! " she gladly hands kateyki to cam. " of course not! kateyki is more angry at the situation than i am. aren't you? " kateyki's expression doesn't change. " exactly! " cam's place isn't the size of gigi's villa, but it's cute and humble! she's been there many times before, but it's different when these are her new living quarters. it's so interesting to see how the working class live. she can totally add this to her memoir! " oh! so cozy in here! " cozy is a better word for small. and most importantly, it sounds like a compliment. " i know you want to know why gigi and i are fighting, but, like! i literally can't deal with it right now. " she grunts as she uses all of her energy to pull one of her suitcase into the spare room. " and — like — " she pauses between each word as she jerks her suitcase closer to the door. " cameronia, i'm like trying to be so considerate and like move my luggage myself because you offered me your home, but i can't do it. i haven't taken any creatine today! "
"i'm not giving it to any of my customers, suvi. just keep it here for now. we'll figure that out later," cameron says. the a/c unit is the least of his concerns. he doesn't mind having her stay over in the slightest. she's one of his closest friends, so as long as she needed a place to stay, he'll offer that. though, something tells him it's going to be a while considering how gigi and suvi are. he picks up kateyki from her, scratching the cat's neck and looking down at her when suvi asks the question. kateyki's face stays deadpan as usual. maybe he should adopt a cat. "it's fine. we'll talk about that whenever you feel like you want to. no pressure." he's already asked a bunch of times. he's not getting an answer from either girls, so he'll just stay in the dark! he puts kateyki down on one of the sofas and moves to pick up the luggage. "well, of course i'm not making you carry those. make yourself at home. i already got the stuff for the donut mochi too and have the recipe ready. maybe i'll add them to forno luciani's menu as a special. would be cool, no?"
he walks behind the counter, helping himself to one of the botched pieces of pastry on the rack ( he knows better than to pick a perfectly good one ). he tears into it with his teeth. " right. so. someone decided to fucking make a tinder profile of me. funny joke hahahaha we can all laugh, whatever. " he takes another bite and continues to talk with his mouth full. " niya tells me and shit and we're trying to find out who the fuck it is and then i ask fucking alya if she has tinder. forgot she has a boyfriend. my bad. and then she started saying weird ass shit and i was like — no fucking way! you're the one who made the profile! she starts lying saying it wasn't here and then admits it, starts acting as if i deserved to have a fake profile made of me. bro, shit was fucked. and then look at this shit! " he shows him the two last texts she sent. the weird email text and the youtube video.
cameron walks behind ale, leaning back against one of the counters and folding his arms across his chest, waiting for the story. at first, he doesn't believe his ears. what's with people in capri making tinder profiles of each other? was there some epidemic of fake tinder profile nowadays in this town? first mi mi and santi and now alya and ale. "what the hell?" is the first immediate thing to come out of his mouth. then a silence hangs as he reads over the texts. "bro i have so many questions." his brows furrow. "also, that email text message is fucking weird. wait, why did she even make a fake tinder profile? was she trying to prank you or something?"
where: the luciani family home when: morning time who: rhys (@moj1to)
"okay, get up. come on. up!" cameron knocks only one time before he goes into rhys's bedroom, expecting his brother to be sleeping. he had closed forno luciani for the day, something he hardly ever does, but with the disaster that followed mi mi's vindictive review, he's been even more concerned about his brother than the usual. and if there's one thing he'll do, is he won't allow his younger brother to spiral, something he's experienced before. "we're going boating," he says. it's something both brothers have a special spot for in their hearts, something they grew up doing. whenever cameron needed an escape, the water was always there for him, and he hopes it'll be the same for rhys today. a small escape away from town would do them good. "i'm counting till five. if you're not up, i'm pouring ice cold water on you."
❛❛ sadly i can, but she never gives me any extra. think you can ask for some ? ❜❜ the smirk immediately forms at the corner of his lips at the thought of cam committing this attrocity. gabe never cared much about the looks of others, isn't easily flustered or embarassed. maybe that's why he gets such a kick doing it teasingly to others. ❛❛ yeah, but we all know it's bullshit. ❜❜ we as in anyone with common sense, which is a lot to ask of tourists or living for gossip elders. the swabys would never have MICE in the kitchen. he scoffs at cam's confidence ; hot as ever. ❛❛ just for that i might say something bad, see how you scramble out of stale pastries allegations with those blushy cheeks. ❜❜ he hides his grin behind another sip of coffee flavored drink. ❛❛ wasn't around much the first two days, work and all. i made time for day three, playing some beach volley and getting a bit of a crowd bath. the closing show was great. ❜❜ understatement of the century. ❛❛ next year you should put up a booth in the food court, mix business and fun. ❜❜
"what, turn up that charm. i know you have it in you," cameron points out with a knowing look. "she'll give you all the sugar packets they have." he's not interfering in gabe's crimes, thank you very much. it's all on him. he's got a reputation to uphold around town! "we know it's bullshit. tourists, however, not so much." his brows furrow. forno luciani is beloved amongst its locals, and they remain a backbone ensuring it stands still. during tourist season, business tends to boom, as it does for s&l and for any food service business, so the review mi mi had left is malicious. tourists will believe it. cameron lets out a light chuckle before he scoffs lightly. "you wouldn't." he takes a sip of his own cappuccino, nodding along. "work couldn't even let you enjoy all three days." he clicks his tongue. "hm, maybe. though i'd be working the booth all the time, i'll miss out on all the activities." he doesn't expect rhys to help out all that much, and as much as he loves the bakery, it was nice to get a break of sorts.
his voice had a very specific talent for making her want to throw things for a while now, today it just does nothing for her. maybe it’s because she’s been replaying too many conversations in her head, thinking of too many people she doesn’t know how to look at anymore or maybe she just doesn’t want to give him that satisfaction and she doesn’t, not even turning to give him a death stare as his words land. “ then we’re both disappointed, ” flat, almost bored and a few days ago, she’d probably ask him if he needed directions to a garage that could tolerate him, but right now she just keeps her eyes on the engine, grip tightening around the wrench. he speaks again and this time, she actually can’t help the annoyed sigh, finally forcing herself to look at him. “ then buy one, ” an idiotically obvious answer. it’s almost strange, having him standing in this garage again, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else when the last time they were alone in the same place, things looked different. the workbench used to sit beneath the window, her pink toolbox was against the opposite wall and there used to be an old stool in the corner that she still remembers how he'd steal whenever he came by so he could sit for hours while she worked. now, the stool is gone, the workbench has moved, her tools are actually organized now and even the little collection of junk she would swear she's going to fix finally disappeared. niya moved things around over the years, slowly, without really thinking why. “ or leave it there, i’ll change it, ” she holds out her hand for the keys, not bothering to take a step towards him. it’s almost laughable, really. for a fraction of a second, she even remembers what it used to mean to have him around before anger takes over again. seen. he’d made her feel seen without niya having to ask and for a long time, she thought it was what made them special because she didn’t have to work as hard to be understood as she does now. cameron would always make it easy; whether she rambled about something stupid or changed her mind halfway through a sentence, he used to know what she meant, the same way he knew when she wanted him to argue back or she just needed him there. she could say nothing and he’d know what she meant anyway and she never had to make herself smaller or quieter or easier to understand around him. which is why she never found it in herself to forgive him because when it mattered and when there was something real sitting between them, he hadn’t seen her at all. “ just give me the keys, luciani. you can go be miserable somewhere else, i’ll call you when it’s done, ” she won’t, he’s blocked. maybe she will ask alessandro.
cameron rolls his eyes. it's a surprise they don't roll into another dimension. "really, is that easy? i just buy one? thanks. i had zero idea," cameron deadpans, reciprocating her flat, bored tone. there's a famous phrase that goes around, about how there's a thin line between love and hate. if you asked him years ago, he would have laughed at the absurdity of it. things have changed, and he can say with a certainty that it is true. he's experienced this. he's been on both ends of the spectrum when aniyah kassir, the only person to have managed to bring out of him every emotion on the spectrum. happiness and safety, the feelings of being seen and understood, excitement, feelings of potential. he was on one side: love. the thrill that came with sneaking around transformed into something heavy and draining. then the jealousy, the anger, feeling like a second option, like a burden, betrayed. but he pushed through. till it becomes too much and it blows up. that's how the line gets crossed. he's on the other side: hate. feelings are such a fucking tricky thing, aren’t they? "how long is it going to take you to change it? i can't go without my car for long. someone else can work on it. is ale not around?" he doesn't trust her not to purposely fuck his car up. more often that not, she looks at him like she's seconds away from committing a crime, so trusting her with his car is a massive gamble. he's about to text ale to make sure he double checks his car before he gets it back. sometimes, it gets exhausting talking to her, a battle of who pushes more, of who hurts and maims deeper. but certain words that have been said, and select memories remain plastered and glued in his memory, much to his dismay. they're a fuel of sorts, for his anger, feelings that never found a real outlet. so they stay. and cameron's not looking to get maimed again or show any shred of vulnerability and weakness around her. he throws his keys up so she can catch them. he smiles, but there's nothing kind about it. "i'm only miserable around you, kassir. i'll let ale know i left my car here."
she wasn't sure what she was going to say or do once he turned around. she wasn't sure why she even tried to get his attention, considering it was an incredibly busy day. but it was too late to back away now, considering he was walking her way. " well, " she pauses, to straighten herself in her spot, but mostly to think about what she will say. " it's wonderful of you to show face. i had expected the manager to be around a little more on such a busy day like today. " elodie teased as she leaned over, elbows rested on her thighs while wrists dangle off her knees. " i would highly appreciate it if the manager could take a break to sit with a customer for a cappuccino. "
cameron's unable to keep the serious look on his face for too long. he's not sure what to expect from this and where elodie's going with it. it's a few seconds before the smile that curves up his lips betrays him. "you're right. i'm sorry about that. i never want the customer to feel like i'm not around." the customer is always right, aren't they? "of course. your wish is my command. but first," he says, raising his forefinger and moving back behind the counters, and getting a plate of cannoli and preparing two cups of cappuccino. he places the plate and her cup in front of elodie before taking the empty seat opposite of her. "on the house. i hope this will help fix things."
" fuckkkkk, bro. where do i even begin. "
"from the start. tell me everything."

" bro.... "
"talk to me, bro."
it's easier over text, flirting mostly but also any communication. mi mi xue wears her heart on her sleeve, and is desperate to find a mask that fits over her ballooning emotions. so far, the closest she has is digital communication, where they can't see the way her face lights up as he volleys back and makes her feel like she's his equal. that's all she ever craved, to feel equal to everyone else. she knows that it doesn't come as easily to her as it does to everyone else, but she's willing to do whatever song and dance it takes to have warm eyes scan her face and silently tell her that she's doing a good job. “ i know you don't think i'm just anyone, cameron, ” she copies his emphasis and tone. “ but if you're worried about a stronger, handsome-r guy outdoing you, you might as well buy me two drinks. just to be safe. ”
"you got me there. no, you're not just anyone," cameron replies honestly. "which is something you shouldn't be taking very lightly," he adds with a playful tilt of his head. the club music might be very loud, but at the very moment, with his full focus on mi mi, he couldn't tell you what song was even playing. he was initially planning to finish his drink quickly and head back home for some much deserved rest. however, maybe his plans have changed that there's some good company. cameron was a sucker for good banter, sue him. beyond everything, he genuinely did care about mi mi, initially because she was rhys's childhood best friend who ended up becoming someone he considered a friend himself too. he's never been blind to mi mi's demeanor around him, but he also knows better than to engage and let it develop into something he can't turn away from because his heart's too deep in it. been there, done that and he's not looking for a repeat. for now, he keeps it innocent and light and fun. "worried? nonsense. i can keep your attention here with me just fine," he teases. "finish your first drink, then we'll talk about a second."
# located at cameron's house — ft. cameron @lemonstang
" cameronia! i'm here! " she motions for the taxi driver to bring in her things into the house. only two large suitcases and a medium sized one for kateyki's essentials. " grazie! " she hands him two twenty euro bills, waving as he takes off. " do you have ac here? i brought an ac unit if you don't! " she points to a big box in front of the door. " say hi kateyki! remember uncle cameron! "
cameron places his hands on his hips, eyes down on all the suitcases suvi got with her. he's expected something of the sort. what he didn't expect is for whatever fight between suvi and gigi to still be going on. he still has no idea what happened, and he feels like a broken record asking. but when it comes to gigi and suvi, he'll take whatever it is with a grain of salt. "wow, you've really thought it all over," he notes, chuckling. "i have an ac. here let me carry the stuff. but first," he pauses, reaching over to take kateyki from her. "i missed you. been way too long." he looks over at suvi again. "is kateyki also not on speaking terms with gigi?"

ass crack of dawn o clock but there's still a pep in both mens step, a testament of bodies used to early mornings and busy work days. santi leans with his back against the counter, watching cameron prep what looks like a million pounds of dough, his usual breakfast of rice congee in hand. “ when the fuck is rhys going to clock in? ” in the couple of years knowing the brothers, it was easy to spot who was the oldest in the first encounter and it had nothing to do with looks or personality. it was all due to the fact that cameron was protective as fuck and took on a lot for rhys. case in point, allowing his brother to skip morning prep because he'd rather him sleep in. “ whatever, we don't want his nosey ass here anyways, ” because santi had come in with one goal and he was going to achieve it, “ wanna fill me in on your solemare? ”
"you know, one of these days you gotta decide to go for an italian pastry for breakfast. there's a lot of good options," cameron points out, looking up from the dough at his friend. he appreciates santi for keeping him company so early into the day. he works just fine in silence, but he'd take the company any day. somehow he's even more productive. "not for another few hours. pigs would fly first before you saw him around during the early hours of his own accord." sometimes cameron had to practically force him to come in early. most of the time, he can manage just fine early, having created a schedule for himself, but other times, he needed the extra help. he attempts being stricter sometimes, and as much as he loves him, he also knows there's no use beating a dead horse. "my solemare? pretty uneventful." if you don't count the fact that he had vodka thrown at his shirt. a playful smile curves up his lips. "sounds like you're fishing for gossip."

she sat by a corner, busy with a book. glasses on the bridge of her nose as she picked up her gaze to see cameron walking by. thinking this would be the perfect opportunity if he hadn't noticed her. " excuse me, " she calls, not waiting for him to turn around. " i'd like to make a complaint to the manager. " another pause, devilish grin tugs at the corners of her lips. " can you call him for me, please ? "
it was a busy day at forno luciani, the kind of day where cameron had yet to catch his breath. but he doesn't mind days like that at all. it keeps business running. otherwise, he would probably get too bored. luckily, his brother's around today, taking over some of the load. he's making his way towards the back office to fetch his phone, having left it there unchecked for hours already, when he hears the words. he stops in his place, brows furrowing before he registers the voice. he turns around spotting none other than elodie. he grins for a moment before a more serious expression takes place, effortlessly falling into the role. he walks towards her. "i'm the manager. how can i help?"
