The Coven’s gardens had to be one of Tessa’s favorite places to visit when she needed to clear her mind, and lately, she found herself wandering there quite often. Her dreams were really beginning to bother her, and she still hadn’t figured out what she should do about them. Telling someone, for some reason, seemed too rash of a decision. Maybe she just needed to get out of the Coven for a while…maybe after they were able to track down this murderer on the lose. While examining a few lilies that were near a few benches, she heard someone yell out something. Turning, she saw a woman yelling at a bird, and Tessa couldn’t help but give an amused smile. “You know there’s a giant kitchen in the mansion, right? Just go get another sandwich.”
The girl’s attitude irked Lena. The Lena of a few years back would have put this witch in her place. Unfortunately, now that she was was an Elder-to-be she couldn’t say the words that had popped so quickly to her mind. After giving the bird one final glare, she placed an apologetic smile carefully on her lips and turned to face the woman before her. “Forgive me, I suppose I’ve been a bit on edge lately what with a murderer on the loose. This poor bird just became an outlet I’m afraid. Please, forgive my outburst and rudeness. Of course I’ll just go to the kitchens for something else to eat. Would you care to join me?” In her mind she desperately hoped the girl would deny her invitation, but she doubted that would be the case. Not that it mattered, since she would have to put on a pleasant appearance for anyone she might encounter. Might as well use her acting skills on this girl for now.
Izobel had been out for a walk, simply to get her mother to save her energy and stop insisting that she take a walk outside. She was disappointed to see most of the benches occupied, and was about to walk past another occupied bench when she heard the outburst from the girl, at seemingly nothing… until she noticed the bird, lazily hopping away with the sandwich. She offered a small smile. “You could always just go to the Dining Hall. Or if you just go into the kitchen, the familiars are normally nice enough to let you make something for yourself.”
Lena had to keep herself from rolling her eyes at the girl. She knew very well the workings of the dining hall and that the familiars would make something for her. The thought of making something herself almost made her laugh aloud. Knowing that she needed to keep up appearances, though, she returned the girl’s smile and did her best to seem grateful. “Yes, I know, thank you. I’m sorry, It’s just been a stressful time lately, and I suppose I took it out on that poor bird. Please forgive my outburst.” She smiled kindly at the girl and moved her unpacked lunch into her lap. “Would you care to sit with me?”
“You’re welcome to have half of mine,” Addison offers her half of the chicken salad she’d made earlier. If she were being honest, she wasn’t that hungry to begin with. She’d heard that it was better to snack throughout the day in order to curb the morning sickness, but after having nibbled on food all morning, she wasn’t hungry for lunch.
Startled to find someone standing next to her, Lena turned her glare upon the girl who seemed to have appeared from nowhere. Realizing her mistake, she shook her head and found a smile. “Thank you, that’s very kind. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to give you such a rude look. I’m afraid I’ve been a bit on edge what with the murders and all. No need to give up your sandwich, though, I’ll just go to the kitchens and find something there.”
“Your curiosity will be fully fed in the near future, but right now, I need my successor to be as innocent as can be,” she smiles wickedly. “Therefore, sometimes you will be kept in the dark and I expect that when you choose your own successor one day, you will do the same.”
“It is rather ridiculous the way the woman wants to take care of everyone in this damned place,” The Elder shakes her head. “However, it’s not the Mother that we need to worry about at the moment. Elder Ivy has been particularly secretive these past few months. While I had written it off as her usual paranoia, it’s only gotten worse. That’s why tonight I shall be doing some surveillance on her. I’m hoping that I shall be able to find out who her successor shall be and if I succeed, I will be entrusting you with the information. If we discover who the witch is, then it’s possible we can bring another amongst our ranks.”
“Tuesday evening,” Circe informs her with a smile. “Do not bother, I shall have someone pick it up for you. Just tell me the place and the dress, and I promise you that it will be delivered by tomorrow morning.”
Lena smoothed down her clothes and put on the most innocent mask she could muster. She knew it would be enough to satisfy the woman, and it amused her to play so many parts. “I’m afraid I don’t know much of anything. I know the Elders are doing their best to sort things out and to figure out how to prevent such terrible things from happening again in the future. I’m sorry, but if you want any more details you’ll have to ask the Elders yourself and it will be up to them to share what they can.”
Listening carefully, she nodded at the information that was being shared. It was definitely peculiar that Elder Ivy had yet to choose a successor. The way she’d been acting lately had triggered the girl’s notice, but she hadn’t felt it was her place to mention it to her mentor. “Do you need assistance with surveillance? I don’t mean to presume you need help with the act itself, I merely mean if you need me to move someone out of the way or some other form of assistance I’m willing to help.”
A broad grin spread across the girl’s full lips at the promise of a new outfit. It was one of the only genuine emotions she ever showed - joy over fashion. “Oh, thank you Circe! It’s from that boutique on River Street, the one you and I love so much run by that old Chinese couple. It’s the black dress in the window display. You’re going to die when you see it. It’s fantastic. You’ll love it!” A girlish squee escaped her lips at the end of her fashion rant. She was so excited that she did a little twirl and giggled as if she weren’t one of the most powerful members of the Coven.
The Elder glared sharply at Lena. “It’s your duty to give the masses the answers that they want to hear, not fuel their fantasies that this is some Hunger Games dystopia. It’d be a shame, after all, if they would turn against their would be leader, too. You surely must know that anyone allied with the Elders also face the same fate.”
“I only do so to protect you,” Circe says, but it is only half true. “The less you know about this particular occurrence, the better. However, I will tell you that is more than possible that she did, and she was a threat to whoever or whatever did kill her.”
“Therefore, everyone,” she cocks her head to the side. “Who might know something is at risk. Not only from the murderer, but from the rest of the Elders. Elder Ivy is on a warpath, and Elder Nevian is certainly willing to do just about anything to avenge the death. You know how saintly she can be.”
“You know I will only tell them what they need to hear.” Holding up her hands in a form of surrender, Lena decided to let the topic drop. She knew Circe almost as well as the elder knew her, and therefore she knew when it was time to let something go - for now. “I appreciate you feeding my curiosity. I just want to know what goes on so that I know how to handle things appropriately when I am eventually one of the Elders. Your guidance means everything to me. Thank you.” She knew she was going overboard, but there was truth in her words. While she shared a love/hate relationship with her mentor, she truly did appreciate all that the woman had done for her.
“Ah, yes, Mother Nevian will be on the war path as soon as she finds out who or what has done this to our community.” Lena almost giggled at the mental image she had of the Elder in a habit. The woman was definitely something else, and she knew that she could never use that nickname around anyone but Circe. “When is the funeral, then? I’ll need to start planning what to wear. I saw a lovely black dress in a nearby boutique the other day. I may have to send someone to pick it up for me.”
The Elder laughs, obviously very proud that her successor was at least proving to be the perfect picture of support when she needed to be. It was important that their appearances were maintained. With her being so close to fulfilling her plans for the future, there was room for mistakes. “Just be sure to continue being that supportive Elder-to-Be, and I do expect that you will be there for the funeral and you will offer your condolences to the family. The Coven needs to think that we are doing everything in our power that we’re doing something.”
“Of course you do, Lena,” Circe taps her nails against her arm rest. “Very well, the familiar that was killed was one of Elizabeth Ivy’s familiars she’d taken with her on her trips. In fact, she was asked to speak at Miss Ivy’s impending trial because it was thought that she might have seen something or heard something while she was bringing the meals to her room. Many believe that’s what got her killed.”
“We can also say that she was stabbed, right through the heart, but there are no signs of a weapon.” The Elder leans forward to stare at her success long and hard. “Is that all the beans you wish to have?”
With a dramatic curtsy, Lena did her best to show that she would do what was needed in order to keep things as they needed to be. “I will be the most earnest of anyone with my condolences, you can be sure of that. I also assure everyone who asks that you and the other Elders are doing everything you can to get to the bottom of this and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.” A sly smile twitched the edges of her lips upwards. “Of course, sometimes these things just happen and no one knows what to do about them.”
As she listened carefully, doing her best to read between the lines, Lena was pleased to find that the rumors were true. Familiars were a strange species in her mind, and while they proved necessary they were hardly worth crying over. They did their jobs and so long as they remained in their place she had no problem with them one way or another. “I suppose so, though you seem to be holding back on me. I’m hurt that you don’t trust me.” A mock pout turned her lips down, but the sentence was so amusing that it quickly turned into a sort of laugh. “So, I guess the real question is did she actually hear something important?”
With a wicked smile, she circles roses on the checklist despite what her Elder-to-Be said. “Now, now, Lena” she tsks, “People are in grieving and already they are beginning to turn to the Elders for answers in their fear and anger. If we show that we don’t care, then everything begins to crumble away and people will begin to revolt.”
Circe was actually surprised that she hadn’t stopped by to interrogate sooner. “Curious, aren’t we?” The Elder leans back into her office chair. “All signs are pointing to murder, yes. However, investigations are still under way and I don’t remember the Elders giving out a formal announcement about it either, so whatever you hear in here is strictly still rumor.”
“Why the sudden interest in a familiar’s death?”
“Yes, well, you happen to know that I don’t care. There’s no pretending with you. You should have seen me with the group that flocks to me, though. I was the picture of grief.” Lena transformed her face into a mask of horror at the thought of the murder. She even managed to work up some teary eyes just for the benefit of her mentor. She knew how to act when others were around, but there was no point in pretending with Circe. This woman knew her truest heart, and they were far too similar in some ways.
Tilting her head to the side, she gave the woman a knowing look. “You know how rumors spread. They’re not easy to contain. You also know that I have a way of hearing everything.” She wasn’t falling for the false pretenses oozing out of the woman before her. The elder knew something, or had done something, and Lena was far too curious and eager for secrets to let it slide idly by. “Because I enjoy being well informed. You already knew that. So, spill the beans.”
“Roses or lilies,” The Elder is reading off of a checklist for the funeral for that familiar girl who’d died. It was rather ridiculous the requests the family had been making considering their daughter was dead and any type of flower they asked for wouldn’t make a damn difference. Placing the paper down, she shoves the checklist away to stare at the person in front of her.
With a quirk of her brow, she says, “I imagine that you’re here for a reason and not to ask me about the flower arrangements at the funeral.”
Lena had gone looking for her mentor after her shift at the library had ended. She’d heard about the death of the familiar girl and wanted to ask Circe about it. It just so happened that when she found the old bat the woman was reading off some sort of checklist for the funeral. “Roses are too expensive for a familiar. Go with lilies if you must, but honestly I’d do carnations. They’re remarkably cheap.” Looking up into the eyes of the woman who knew her better than anyone, she raised an eyebrow in return to Circe’s question. “I could hardly care less about the flower arrangements or the funeral. I wanted to see what you know about her death. Rumor has it she was murdered.”
Finally time for a break from her dreary nine to five, Lena was pleased that the weather was nice enough for her to eat in the gardens. The sun was shining and since it was still the beginning of summer, Georgia hadn’t quite decided to turn up the heat just yet. Smiling to herself as she unpacked her lunch bag and placed its contents neatly on the bench next to her. It was a beautiful day, and she closed her eyes to enjoy the sunlight on her face. A rustling nearby startled her into opening her eyes, and what she saw instantly ruined her mood. A bird had landed on the bench and snatched the sandwich she had just unwrapped and was now hopping away with it. “You filthy creature! I hope you’re pleased with yourself. Now what am I supposed to eat?”

B A C K G R O U N D & P E R S O N A L I T Y;
Everything in Lena’s life had been handed to her on a silver platter by her parents. Having been the first born, there were certain obligations that she had to meet, but there were also many, many privileges that outweighed the boring duties. The pretty dresses, the grand parties, the people that stared at her with awe … it was everything that she loved, and everything that she deserved. Lena, in her own right, was royalty, a princess that would one day become a queen amongst the lesser people. While they would work in the fields, she would be living in a castle. That’s what her parents had always said when she was a small girl at least, so that’s what she’s always believed. However, her beliefs were challenged when a couple years later, her parents brought home a new baby. It hadn’t been expected by anyone as the couple hadn’t been particularly affectionate with one another in a very long time, but after bringing home what they called, “the answer to our prayers!”, it seemed as if their problems vanished into thin air. The attention that had once belonged solely to her was shifted onto the small, squalling baby that never did shut up. The stories of Kings and Queens that her parents had once told her were now being told to the hideous, scrunchy faced thing in a crib. Lena hated her new sibling more than anything else in the world – more than the vegetables she was forced, more than the color black, and even more than her traitorous parents who’d pledged their loyalty to another. That baby was a curse, and she was willing to do anything to get rid of it.
Her parents were aware of the bitterness in their daughter, but while they attempted to mend things by giving her one-on-one attention, Lena would always revert back to her threats. They hoped that it was just a phase, and that she’d grow out of it except she never did. She took every opportunity to torment her younger sibling whenever she could – from things like stealing their toys to hitting them when no one was looking, she enjoyed watching the small child cry. However, her anger came into full effect when they were both old enough to receive their individual gifts. While her younger sibling had a power that could make people laugh, Lena’s was more dangerous than anyone could have imagined. Her hypnosis abilities gave her the chance to take control of anyone that defied her, a fact that hadn’t gone unnoticed by certain people. It began with little things; having someone give her their extra dessert, it might as well been child’s play. Convincing someone to look so close to a fire that it causes third degree burns that could only be partially healed by the familiars. That was the case with her sibling, Penn Eldridge, who she hated more than anything, and anyone, else. It hadn’t been easy to convince them, but in the end, her power had overtaken their weak will, leaving the smell of burning flesh residing in the living room. When their parents had found them, they’d been not only horrified at what’d happened, but also terrified of the smirk painted on their first born’s lips.
It was in the Infirmary when Lena realized what she’d done, however it was for the entirely wrong reason. Having caused her sibling pain hadn’t bothered the young witch, but rather having been so blatantly obvious about it. Other witches throughout history had done similar things, and their stories had always ended the same way: with their execution. She knew that when her parents told the familiars about the injuries, the familiars would run to the Elders with the news immediately. There’d be no way in hell that she could hypnotize her parents like she’d done before, at least not both at the same time. Lena was planning on what dress she’d wear to her execution when Elder Circe sat calmly beside her. While she expected to be taken away by the cold beauty, she was surprised to find the Elder to be particularly understanding of her situation. It was during that long, long night that the older woman shared her advice with Lena, advice that she would never forget. People like them, with powers that distorted the mind, weren’t like others who could manipulate the universe around them. The mind was more powerful than that, making them more power than anyone else … but that also made it dangerous for them and they had to be careful on who they used their powers on. It was from that day on that Lena had been claimed as Circe’s student, and as such, was protected from any punishment that might have been sent her way.
Lena learned under Elder Circe, but most importantly, she learned that there was no need for her to do dirty work anymore. While it’s not permitted by the other Elders for the young woman to use her powers to manipulate people into doing her bidding, it is guaranteed that you’ll find people surrounding her in a protective circle. It’s not as if anyone could prove that Lena has hypnotized all those people, but they certainly couldn’t disprove anything either. However, she still has to be careful with her powers due to the incident many years ago with the fire. Her parents had successfully been altered by both the Elder and her prodigy, but her younger sibling who she had been able to manipulate so easily before was more difficult now than ever. They were afraid of them both, yes, but that fear could easily push them into desperation or, even worse, courageous acts. Lena keeps a close eye on her sibling as well as the other enemies that she’s made over the years. She understands that she has gained a lot, more so than others have in the Coven, and with it she knows that she has a lot to gain. It’d be a cold day in Hell before she lets someone else take her crown from her again, but let’s be honest … could anyone live that long to get close to her in the first place?
CONNECTIONS;
Penn Eldridge is their sibling, but there is no one that Lena despises more. From the moment that her parents brought in the squalling child, there was nothing that she hated more and while they’ve grown up now, she still takes whatever chance she can to torment them.
Lena likes to remind Lux McCoy of the past when her parents had been executed by the Elders, or the time when she lost her title as Elder-to-Be. It’s good for the succubus to remember her place.
Circe Lawson has been her mentor for years now, and while Lena is grateful to her for teaching her everything she needs to know, she thinks it’s about time for the old hag to step down as an Elder.
