He laughed, “You’re smarter than you thought, huh?”
“I have to say, I was not expecting to feel that on my way to lunch.”
A breeze swept through the foyer, moving through and under every thing that it came in contact with. After a few seconds, a piece of paper was blown up and Gaia grabbed it as it came down. They examined it and passed it over to Izobel. “Still working hard, I see.”
Izzy sighed with relief, gladly taking the piece of paper, nervously watching as the Elder scanned her list of books. She nodded, smiling. “When I can. I’m just trying to do a better job of keeping track of all the work I’m doing. Things tend to easily get lost in my room, though. And apparently, even in my hands.”

Jay strolled into the library, slowly pacing through the shelves as her eyes skimmed the titles of the many books in front of her. In the few months she had been back at the Coven, she had made it a point to come to the library to learn something of her witching background. The amount of knowledge and magic around her had taken her a bit by surprise even though she had been aware of how magical the place actually was. She supposed she was more surprised by the fact that she honestly didn’t know much beside her own power.
Picking up a book on potion making with mundane plants, Jay sat on top of a table instead of on the chair, crossing her legs and placing the books on her lap. But just as she began to read, she heard a tapping. She ignored it at first, but it only got faster and louder, twisting her face into a scowl. “Dear fucking God, can you stop the damn tapping?”
Izobel pulled back, not realizing she had been doing it at all. It was weird, she normally didn’t have that sort of nervous tick. She didn’t dare waste the extra brainpower or effort on that type of thing. Because even if it was a subconscious movement, she still felt it tire out her mind. Or maybe it was her imagination tricking her into that feeling. Still, she set her pen down pointedly. “Sorry,” she muttered, throwing the other woman a look, before returning to her own reading.
The Elder was in a decent mood for once. Their spell had been completed and their research on elemental magic was coming alone nicely. Gaia entered into the foyer and found someone on their knees searching for something. “Do you need help?”
Izobel glanced up over her shoulder, her eyes going wide when she saw Elder Moreno standing by her. “Oh, I... I was walking and one of my papers flew off the stack I had and I think it’s around here somewhere. I just wished I had noticed it before I had gotten back to my room.” She sighed looking around. “It’s a smaller piece of paper, just a short list.”
At the warm touch of his friend, Brandon couldn’t help but break down slightly, shoulders slumping and eyes closing at the heat. Letting out a shaky breath, Brandon blinked his eyes back open, swallowing thickly.
“I’m tired, Izzy.” He croaked out, leaning into her touch. “I’m so fucking tired. I’m tired of this trial, I’m tired of the way people look at me here. Sometimes, I even find myself tired of teaching.”
“..I can’t even remember the last time I’ve had a decent nights sleep.”
She rubbed his back gently, maintaining her calm exterior. She was good at that, being something for people to latch onto when everything seemed to be getting the best of them. When everything got the bests of her, well, she did her best to not bother too many people.
“I know how it feels, Brandon. If anyone deserves a break from life, it’s you.” She pursed her lips, wishing she was able to get everyone to stop, to let Brandon have some peace. “Is there anything I can do to help? I wish I could lend you a good nights sleep, I really do.”
Chayse tried to suppress his cough from breathing in the first wave of acrid smoke, not willing to give himself away just yet. It took a bit of willpower, but he managed. “I suppose. What about you, stranger? Ever set anything on fire on a homework assignment gone wrong?”
Izzy laughed, a touch of bitterness creeping in. “That would mean I had put in the effort to actually do the homework assignments. Though I did fall asleep while making a potion once and there was purple smoke involved.”
“Some people do call me Em so you weren’t that off after all.”
“Ah, well there you go! My mind had it all right in there somewhere.”
“The sun moves when time goes by,” he said plainly, not in a sarcastic way but simply stating it. When the girl moved he gave her a silent thanks with a nod of his head and started to tip the pail over to let water fall onto the flowers. “Nope. Heat strokes can happen anytime you’re in the sun, really. Working hard can speed it up, yeah, but it’s really about hydration and your body temp. Trust me. I passed out from one while sleeping- if that makes sense. It’s fine though. Just have this patch to do and I’ll be on my way.”
“I mean, I know that, but I guess I just wasn’t thinking about it.” She sighed, shaking her head, finding a shadier spot to put her stuff down in. “That must have been terrifying though, to pass out in your sleep. People could just assume you’re still sleeping when you really need help.” She shook her head, a shiver finding it’s way up her spine despite the heat outside. “It must be a lot of work taking care of all the plants.”

Finally time for a break from her dreary nine to five, Lena was pleased that the weather was nice enough for her to eat in the gardens. The sun was shining and since it was still the beginning of summer, Georgia hadn’t quite decided to turn up the heat just yet. Smiling to herself as she unpacked her lunch bag and placed its contents neatly on the bench next to her. It was a beautiful day, and she closed her eyes to enjoy the sunlight on her face. A rustling nearby startled her into opening her eyes, and what she saw instantly ruined her mood. A bird had landed on the bench and snatched the sandwich she had just unwrapped and was now hopping away with it. “You filthy creature! I hope you’re pleased with yourself. Now what am I supposed to eat?”
Izobel had been out for a walk, simply to get her mother to save her energy and stop insisting that she take a walk outside. She was disappointed to see most of the benches occupied, and was about to walk past another occupied bench when she heard the outburst from the girl, at seemingly nothing... until she noticed the bird, lazily hopping away with the sandwich. She offered a small smile. “You could always just go to the Dining Hall. Or if you just go into the kitchen, the familiars are normally nice enough to let you make something for yourself.”
Brandon couldn’t remember the last time he had slept. Since the visit from Circe, the death of a Familiar he once gave lessons to…Murdered, just the way his mother used to murder witches..Everything was thrown together in a blur now. He hadn’t touched the potion that Willow had given him, knowing full well that it wouldn’t cure his nightmares.
“…I’m sorry, what did you say?” Blinking back into focus, Brandon rubbed his face before bringing his attention back to the person in front of him. “Sorry, I hope you don’t mind repeating.”
“I was just asking if you were okay? Because you really don’t look okay.” She crossed her arms, shaking her head. She had come to ask him some questions about spells and curses, but she had abandoned them for the moment, worried about him. “And don’t tell me your ‘fine’. I will not tolerate that.” She reached over, patting his arm comfortingly.
Chayse was living on borrowed time, playing out his last few skittish months of his life at the Coven before he was found out and killed. The real question was what he planned to do with them. Helping his family of hunters, making sure his sister killed her target, and….maybe figuring out the limits of his power. He spent his nights reading faded yellow pages trying to find mention of someone like him, but he came up empty. His next late night book club topic was how to strip himself of powers, but he couldn’t find anything on that either. One afternoon he got so frustrated with a book that had looked promising that he set a (small, very contained) fire in the corner of the library. He and everyone else was shuffled out and into the hallway while the librarian on duty kept it from spreading into disaster.
“Is it always this eventful here?” He asked coolly, downplaying his little slip up.
Izobel was not happy to be herded out of the library. She hadn’t seen what happened, but all of a sudden, there was smoke and everyone was being directed towards the doors. She sighed leaning against the wall, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over her. When they were let back in, if they were let back in, she’d just pack up her things and go. But, she had to pass the time until then, and turned her head towards the unfamiliar face next to her. “I mean, it’s been extra eventful lately, but normally there’s always some student getting some bit of homework wrong causing some disturbance.”
“It’s true.” Lux wasn’t normally one for torturing children - she tended to stay away from them at all costs. But this batch of eleven year olds had been whispering about her in terror from a distance, and the last thing she needed was for one of them to come and touch her on a dare. “A giant snake lives in the woods and feeds on anyone dumb enough to wander off alone. Let’s see, what else should you know?” She pretended to ponder, eyes narrowing at each individual in turn. “The Elder’s kick out the witch with the lowest grades every year. And every time it rains, that means Brandon is softly sobbing in a broom closet.”
Izobel cocked her head, listening to Lux talk to the children. Honestly, she probably would have let it go, but the terrified looks on the children’s faces prompted her to actually do something. It probably had to do more with the source of the information than what was actually being said. “I can’t say anything about the snake for sure, but I would have been long gone if the grades thing were true. And don’t be mean about Brandon.” She turned and smiled at the kids. “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stick close to the house and study, though.”
“This isn’t my first time in the library, you know. I don’t need to be told the rules,” she muttered, grabbing the rest of her books and falling into her chair.
“It looked like you needed to.” he retorted, rolling his eyes and turning away.
He’d been doing his thing in the greenhouse in a fairly okay mood considering the nightmares he’s been having lately. That murder just triggered things he didn’t want to remember or ever feel again, but he shoveled on through it. The feeling of soft soil and the smell of greenery helped eased his nerves. It always did. Music played in his ears from the headphones that were stuck in and he eventually made his way outside with a large pail to head for the gardens. Hadn’t rained in a while so watering the flower beds should do some good. His steps slowed a bit when he saw a girl laying on the grass and quite frankly in his way. With a tap to her shoulder she got up with a lot more words than needed. “Whoa, it’s alright. I fall asleep all the time in weird places, but you might want to sleep in the shade over there. I’m about to water these flowers and you might get a heat stroke from sleeping in the sun.”
Izobel blinked at the sun, rubbing her eyes, trying to get herself to wake up more. “It did not seem this sunny when I first sat down here.” She pushed herself up straighter, starting to gather her things so she could get out of his way, glancing to where he had pointed. Really, she knew she ought to go back inside, but her mother was probably still asleep or at least in bed. “I always associated heat stroke from working too hard in the sun, not sleeping in it. But thanks. Sorry I’m in the way of your work.”
