‘Your House Helper’ - A K-Drama Review
About This Show: ‘Your House Helper’ is a slice-of-life kdrama centered around the lives of four friends and a man who helps people de-clutter their homes…and hearts.
I know I wrote about this show already mid-season, but my main reason for reviewing it now, is to convince some more people to watch this underrated drama. It was a joy to watch and I’m sad people missed out.
Quiet Slice of Life Drama: This is one of those sweet slice-of-life dramas featuring regular people and their daily lives (think shows like The Package, A Poem a Day, etc. ) It doesn’t center around one person, or have huge life or death plot lines (This is a Chaebol-Free Zone), but features many different people, which makes all the characters well-developed and interesting.
Strong Female Friendships: ‘Your House Helper’ features the stories of three different ladies who live in a house together ( and their one additional friend). If you don’t like one person’s story (say the main couple and their lack of chemistry *cough* age gap! *cough* ), there are so many more to choose from! There are multiple romance story lines and everyone is super supportive of one another. They work through their problems and get help when they need it! I. LOVE. COMMUNICATION.
Gay Character: This show has a lovely gay character who is best friends and business partners with one of the girls. While I wish k-dramas would catch up with the times and take the gay characters into romance world or give them an actual storyline, they handled this aspect really well with no slap stick or offensive stereotypes.
Sexual Harassment and Hostile Work Environment: While this show doesn’t handle sexual harassment as well as I wanted it to, they did parts of it really well (PTSD, conversations, therapy with others, co workers supporting eachother) I’m glad they went there because this is REAL STUFF though and I appreciate the attempt.
Found Family: This show is ALL about healing together, growing as friends and creating your own family…one of my favorite tropes!
Beta Male Heaven: Attorney Ji Kwon & Ga Reum: These pure puppies were strong but totally empathetic and sweet. More than one soft male in a kdrama? Sign me up.
I’m not going to nitpick this show because even if there are small issues, they are negligible so I’ll just say two more things:
The Main’s Chemistry: So…remember ‘A Poem a Day’ and how people weren’t into the leads’ chemistry because it wansn’t overly dramatic and angsty? Well, that’s how the leads are in this show. I really like their relationship because both are going through things, rely on one another and grow into their love and respect for eachother so I’m sold! However, you won’t get butterflies watching them. (though there are other romances afoot so it’s all good!)
The Sexual Harassment Stuff: Without being specific I’ll say I’d change a few things but I did like large parts of it.
In Conclusion: Hardly anyone watched this sweet drama about friendship and healing featuring awesome ladies and found family!! It deserved a lot more praise than it got so…go watch it!
