Sixty-seven years later and the Nakba continues. We will return. We will not forget.
Members of the Palestinian youth movements, the Ashbal. The Ashbal-literally, the cubs- saw themselves, and were seen by Palestinian society, as an elite group who excelled not only in sports, but also in combat.
The Ashbal weapon was the RPG, known in the Soviet Union, where it is manufactured, as “The weapon of the brave”. The Ashbal were expected to fight like “ten fedayeen”. “Every grenade in an RPG costs 34 liras, and you only have six, so don’t waste them” they were told. “Don’t hit your target”- usually a tank-”until it gets close to you, and then immediately move away”
The Israelis dubbed them “the RPG kids” during their 1982 invasion of Lebanon for the devastating number of hits they scored with their grenades and the agility with which they moved. In every battle the Palestinians waged, all the way from the battle of Karameh in 1968 to the Syrian invasion of Lebanon in 1976, from the Israeli invasion of 1978 to the one that came four years later, the Ashbal played a major role.
And sometimes I pray that Allah forgives me for loving the dunya more than myself.

A gut wrenching photo from 1948 shows that Palestinians were literally ’forced into the sea’.
Patience isn’t easy.
Patience is tears. Patience is cringing out of anxiety. Patience is wanting to smash your fists into sujud. Patience is crying for a response from God. Patience is feeling alone. Patience is painful. Patience is taxing. Patience is clenched fists and grinding teeth. Patience is swallowing insults. Patience is smiles covering tears. Patience is so hard.
But remember, The Qur’an says:
“And how could we not place our trust in God, seeing that it is He who has shown us the path which we are to follow?’ ‘Hence, we shall certainly bear with patience whatever hurt you may do us: for, all who have trust [in His existence] must place their trust in God [alone]!’” [14:12]
Remember Who gave you the path to your salvation, have trust in your Lord, and remind yourself of what The Prophet said:
“Seek closeness [to God] and be steadfast [patient], and in all that afflicts the believer there is atonement, even a thorn that pricks him, and the hardship he suffers.” [Tirmidhi]
The true meaning of solidarity is under serious attack and runs the risk of being drastically changed. The proof of this is how fashionable its usage has become, how easily it rolls off the tongues of all sorts of speakers, how unthreatening it is. If the true meaning of solidarity were understood and intended, visible radical change would be happening in the lives of those who endorse it with their applause. Solidarity is NOT a matter of agreeing with, of being supportive of, of liking, or of being inspired by, the cause of a group of people. Though all these might be a part of solidarity, solidarity goes beyond all of them. Solidarity has to do with understanding the interconnections among issues and the cohesiveness that needs to exist among the communities of struggle.
Ada María Isasi-Díaz, “Solidarity: Love of Neighbor in the 1980s” (via lastuli)
Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it’s personal. And the world won’t end. And the speaking will get easier and easier. And you will find you have fallen in love with your own vision, which you may never have realized you had. And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don’t miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you. … And at last you’ll know with surpassing certainty that only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth. And that is not speaking.
Audre Lorde (via isqat-al-nizam)
When someone tells you that you’re emotional, thank them. Thank them for recognizing the part in you that recognizes God.
Key Ballah, Preparing My Daughter For Rain. keywrites (via ildoctora)
When I’m here, I call there “back home” and people nod, they understand that I am here occupying this space, but that it is not really my true space, not my real space. that I belong somewhere else somewhere where I am more fluid, more myself. Somewhere where my name is familiar and my skin is at home . but when I’m there they ask me how long I will be staying, when I will be going “back home” they make the food milder, the tea sweeter, they slow the roll of their tongues and wash out their accents, they call me American girl, and laugh at the way my skin peels, the way I eat mangos, and how much chicken I leave on the bone. and I remember, that I am an inbetweener always straddling never belonging completely anywhere.
Key Ballah, inbetweener (via keywrites)
And I know that loving you is from Allah, because I think of him everytime I think of you.
Key Ballah, the truest form of gratitude (via keywrites)
Apologize with the clear intention of communicating your remorse and willingness to rectify transgression, not with the innate expectation that you’ll be forgiven.

When I meet someone who speaks a different language I ask them to teach me how to say “I love you” in their home tongue. Korean Bengali French Urdu In this exchange they always ask me “why?” I tell them because I’ll never know who I’ll fall in love with. The least I can do is bend my tongue to shape the sound of his home. Italian Swedish Swahili It never dawned on me that I grew knowing how to say I love myself in 3 languages; Arabic Spanish English I never talked to mi corazon in my language of love, Never rolled R’s to make my own heart flutter. Bahibik, was never spoken in the mirror, I spent years learning how to love men in languages I can only utter 3 words in. With 17 years spent of never saying I love you to my reflection, My languages are commonly known, My languages are a love song, My languages are spoken by angels They say a language is lost every 14 minutes. The language of myself is a forever evolving language of love, I can never seem to understand it, but it’s worth learning. So that when I do speak it fluently I can teach the man I love how to tell me he loves me.
