“no problem! we have an avocado bacon burger which is exactly what it sounds like, and then we have a mandarin orange pecan salad. The soup of the day is vegetable and beef.” she gave him a warm smile, “i’m so sorry again for the inconvenience.” she then glanced down quickly at her pad and paper, she usually wasn’t nervous when serving people, but for some reason people of her own age made her a lot more self-conscious. “i can come back if you need a couple more minutes to think about it.” she said, bringing her eyes back up to him.

Leo nodded before smiling. “No, it's fine. The avocado bacon burger with some fries sounds lovely, curly if possible,” he tells her. He pauses a moment, trying to recall what was only said a minute ago. “I haven't had a milkshake here yet. You suggested mint chocolate chip, right?” God, he hoped he didn't repeat the wrong flavor and embarrass himself. He just wanted to take her suggestion, figuring she would know them a bit better than he would.

It wasn’t common for supernaturals to find their way to his spot in the forest unless they had business with him, even less so for humans. It was a dark cave he worked and sold in and usually obscured completely with magic day after day when he left. (Although in rare occasions, he simply forgot.) That evening Roy was sitting on a rugged couch and attempting to focus on a concoction he was working on in the light of a single candle when the raven at the entrance of his cave cawed loudly and flew inside to rest on the fairy’s shoulder. When the bird informed him of his visitor, Roy spoke up. “How may I help you?” He drawled, voice deep and English accent strong.

Leo had been wandering through the woods when he wandered in by accident. He hadn't been paying attention to where he was wandering when he suddenly looked up to see a man sitting in front of him. “Um. I'm sorry, I don't quite know how I got here?” he apologized, looking around for a moment before continuing, embarrassment coating his voice. “Also where is 'here'?”

finley was hoping for an easy day at work, but somehow talbot’s had run out of sandwich bread, and now she was having to ruin people’s days one by one as she told them they’d have to pick something new off the menu. she approached the table, taking in a deep breath as she prepared herself to give out the bad news. “hi - i’m sorry we’re actually out of the grilled cheese, there was a bread shortage,” she said with a sad expression and a shrug, “how a diner has a bread shortage i’m not exactly sure. if you want them to cook it for you on a bun they’re more than willing to do that, otherwise is there anything else on the menu that looks good? i could read off the specials again if you’d like?” she said as she could see the disappointment on their face. “you’re also going to get a milkshake on the house for the inconvenience, so let me know which flavor sounds good. i personally recommend the mint chocolate chip one, it’s delicious.”

Leo was so excited to go to the diner for lunch. He trusted Charlie to keep the shop from descending into utter chaos and watch the girls while he ate. Now, if he came back to a pile of rubble... Well, he would deal with that wh-if it occurred. When he looked over the menu, his eyes kept coming back to the grilled cheese. When the server came over, he smiled but it fell quickly at her words. “Oh, um,” he hesitated, anxiety creeping up in his chest for a moment before he pushed it down. There was no reason to panic, he reminded himself. “If you wouldn't mind, the specials would be nice?” his voice was unsure and sheepish. He felt bad asking for her to repeat herself once more.

i never really feel a thing.

“I think that’s the type of thing you should go to the doctor for? Unless you mean emotionally, then I’m here for you and I already have the number of some therapists around here if you’re interested?” Leo’s voice was soft and kind, not wanting to sound like he was making a joke of it or being rude.

Leo let out a soft sigh and offered a small smile as he began to collect the books from the floor. “It’s alright. They’re not too damaged. I’ll just put them in the discount section so don’t sweat it, man.”

“Neither can I,” Leo sighed, frustrated. “How about we step back for a moment. Maybe some tea will help us think?”

OH, HOW ECHO WANTED TO TERRIFY THIS ONE! there was just something about him that had her wanting it more and no! she didn’t know how to tap into that kind of power… so, instead, she allowed the entail in the moment to strengthen what she intentionally couldn’t. in so, the little ghost had managed to create a duplicate of her own self — which appeared a few feet behind the bat wielding buffoon. invisible, echo flipped the light switch back on and the version he was directed towards… the real one, flinched slightly upon finding the illusion across the room. in that brief moment of hesitation, she lost her concentration and it had her duplicate glitching slightly… making it appear more like a hologram than anything else ; but she appeared frantic, panicked still. like she was about to witness a murder and echo wondered is she’d actually created this manifestation.

❛ stop! don’t look at her! get out! get out now! ❜ the ghostly scream that emitted from her holographic twin was enough to unnerve even her. ( not that that was saying a lot as echo was easily spooked. ) the voice bounced against the walls, resonating within the room — before it seemed to pass through the recently re-lit light bulb and caused it burst at the scene. again, they were in absolute darkness. frozen for a moment after her duplicate had evaporated, echo blinked her eyes rapidly in disbelief. what the fuck was that? sure, she was trying to learn how to haunt ; to be a proper spook… but that? she’d tapped into something a little deeper than she’d intended. the ghost took a few dizzying steps back, becoming corporal without meaning to and accidentally knocking an end table over in the process. though she couldn’t see too well in the dark, echo knew she was no longer invisible… and was currently having a hard time trying to go back.

Leo jumped at the echoed screams, spinning on the balls of his feet to stare at the impossible duplicate of the girl. “What the-” he was cut out by fall of darkness as the bulb burst. Without his permission, an ear-piercing scream slipped from his lips as he jumped back and almost out of his skin. Pop! Without his permission, a standing lamp with a blinding light was conjured into the corner of the room behind him. The crash of the end table made him turn, bat held up high. She didn't look too good. “What the fuck is going on and who the fuck are you?” he demands, voice coming out strong but with a touch of fear leaking through.

Charlie decided to follow along and drop the subject, reminding himself that the things he learned from an immortal life couldn’t possibly be passed on to humans. Sometimes, things had to be learned on their on time, and it wasn’t his place to try and convince Leo otherwise. If Leo wanted to pass off his comment as a joke–when it was far too venemous to be considered so–then Charlie would respect that. “Hey, it beats recommending people books I know nothing about–should I say that? Am I fired now?” 

“You're not fired,” Leo laughed, allowing himself to relax a hair with the success of topic change. “As long as you're giving proper descriptions, that is. Wouldn't do for you to tell someone about a story with dragons for it to be about the cold war,” he teased lightly. He gave Luna a good scritch behind her ears where he knew she tended to like, purrs calming his mind, her kneading ceasing as she pushed her head into his hands.

Jace almost felt sorry for the man, who didn’t seem to have a secretive bone in his body. It had become obvious to him that he was hiding something, most likely to do with being part of the magical witch/warlock community. Fortunately, he seemed rather nice and innocent at the same time and not someone to worry about. “Definitely,” Jace responded with a small, nervous chuckle. “Hey… you happen to know anything about that Evanora lady?” He asked, being blunt in a subtle way by asking if he knew the Supreme of the witches in West Hollow.

Leo blanched. “W-Who?” his voice was shaky and almost fearful. His mother was going to kill him, that is if the rest of the witch community didn't beat her to him. “Odd name, never heard of her. Anywho, should I assume you're looking more for supernatural lore, then?” God, he hoped the man allowed him to change the subject easily, though, that was most likely not his luck.

Leo shrugged. “That’s perfectly fine by me. Nothing says for certain how many minutes we get and I’m fine banking on having plenty left to spend.”

“I don’t know?” he tells, confused. “There’s too much different for it to make sense? Who’s getting confused?”

        “Wise decision,” Hugo agreed, attempting to smooth out the dominant threat in his tone into something a little more… appreciative. While he didn’t care for the bystander’s wellbeing, it would cost him dearly if the wrong person was to get involved in any of these late-night affairs. The people who Hugo surrounded himself with, they weren’t exactly of the kind with pure intentions. A lot of his work relied on town gossip and word of mouth, so when he needed information, he had several guilty sources who’d give it. This young breed of energy that buzzed before him didn’t need to concern himself. “And a little tip. I’d burn some sage for good measure. You don’t want any of this following you home.”

Leo was beginning to turn away when the man spoke again. Sage? Really? He rolled his eyes lightly at the suggestion, only daring to since his back was already turned. “Thanks, I'll keep it in mind,” she called over his shoulder. Something about the other man set Leo on edge but he wasn't always the smartest cookie in the box. He couldn't help himself and conjured an especially slick patch of ice behind the man, hoping it would catch him and he would trip.

Charlie listened intently as Leo spoke, taking care to give him as much space as possible–both mentally and physically–until he was finished. He felt absolutely awful, it was one thing to have a friend die, but it was another thing entirely to have that death happen on your watch, so to speak. He didn’t believe Leo when he said it was his fault, mainly because he had the separation enough from the situation to know it was a number of things that led to his friend’s death. 

His own guilt weighed heavily on him in that moment, but he brushed it aside in the same fashion he had grown used to doing, focusing on much more pressing things at the moment. He took two tentative steps towards Leo, “Hey,” he began, “it’s not your fault,” he said, his tone serious, but knowing that it wouldn’t hold much coming from a stranger like he was. “Sometimes life is just chaotic, and these things happen, and we don’t know why,” but he had found that humans had a difficult time accepting they had little control over the course of things. “Thank you for sharing that with me,” he said, instead. 

Leo took a deep breath, throat catching on it. “But it was,” the words rang through his mind. He knew it was. A hand snapped up to wipe the tears in rough movements, no care given to the flesh beneath. “Pull it together, Leo,” he thought to himself. He nodded at the thanks, unsure of how to respond. “Kinda crazy to end up comforting your boss when he cries, huh?” his voice was coated with self-hatred but he tried to pass it off as a joke. Internally, he berated himself for doing this at all, especially at work.

Parker stopped dropping seeds dead in his tracks and looked up at Leo excitedly. “Dude no fucking way, my dad’s from Arizona! What’s it like over there?” He told him. Parker actually had never been to Arizona, which always made him confused. He often got to visit his mother’s hometown in Northern California, usually on the way to see his sisters, but Oregon and Cali were the extent of his travel. “I’m Parker by the way.” He added.

A large grin lights up Leo's face. “That's awesome, man! It's amazing, I miss it,” he admits honestly. Arizona always has been and always will be his home at heart. Regardless of the pain of all of those memories, he could never call anywhere but there his true home. Yes, his new house was becoming home bit by bit but nothing could replace that town. “You have to go someday.”

“Hey man, we never really get over things like that,” he said, speaking honestly. He lost Gabriele twice–first by being turned, and second to the natural process of life. “Sometimes it helps to talk about it,” he offered, “and I don’t mind listening?”

“It's just,” Leo took a deep, steadying breath before he spoke. “I was driving and going too fast and he, just. We were going to see some stupid movie and I didn't even want to go. He wanted to see it so bad so I acted like I did too, cause I didn't wanna spoil his mood, you know?” his voice got watery and Luna's purrs rose louder, her kneading soft. “We went around a corner and there was this-this fucking deer, right on our side, this baby right behind him. I swerved and it just all went so quickly.”

The images flashed before his eyes in both the greatest detail and almost unrecognizably blurry. The spots on the tiny fawn were bright against the brown, the antlers were large and enough for a legal hunt. The feel of the soft steering wheel under his palms, sweet scent of flowers and candies drifting from the seat next to him, from the person next to him. The crunch of impact. “It was my fault,” his voice was a hoarse whisper. His eyes were wide at staring at the empty table before him, tears silently slipping from his eyes without permission or his knowledge. It was all his fault, the words began to play on repeat in his head, his grip tightening on Luna almost painfully but she just adjusted herself and continued her movements.

Charlie followed him, concern and confusion growing. He thought he should get him a glass of water, or something akin to that, but instead waited to see what he would say. “Sent back?” He knew all about that–to this day, Charlie still ended up washing his hands four times over, unable to shake the image of blood that once coated them. “Don’t apologize,” he said, kindly, “it’s no big deal,”

Leo felt he owed the Charlie at least a basic explanation. “I lost someone. It, um,” he broke off, “It's kinda stuck with me,” he admitted. “I don't wanna bother you with that, though. It's not your problem,” he offered a weak smile. “It happens sometimes still, though it's much less now.”

Charlie wasn’t a fan of prying–but there was only so much he could ignore. He resisted the urge to rush to his side, knowing they didn’t quite know each other like that, but instead looked as stricken as Leo undoubtedly felt. “Leo?” He asked, “Are you alright, man?” 

“Yeah,” Leo shook his head, gathering himself. “Yeah, sorry. I just, uh...” words escaped him for a moment as he tried to push the overwhelming swell of emotion and thought down. “I just got lost for a second. I just need to sit for a moment.” He wandered into the break room absentmindedly, plopping into a chair, Luna now in his lap. The cat began to knead at his chest, purrs calming him as his mind reeled. “Sorry,” he apologized again, mind beginning to clear. “I just get sent back sometimes. I'll be fine in a moment.”
