He let her ramble on, watching in almost-amusement as she stumbled over her words to explain herself. He wasn’t in the least bit upset with her, concerned for her safety yes, but more than that he felt honoured to have someone like her on his side, rooting for him. When she finished, he felt laughter bubble up in his chest at the idea of Augustus being punched in the face. “Thank you for that,” he said, once his laughter had subsided. “He deserves a punch in the face from time to time,”
Another feeling formed within him: confusion. Finley had punched Augustus in the face, and he didn’t so much as leave a scratch on her? For what purpose, exactly? It was certainly something else to think about, on the growing laundry list of things to consider given his recent confession. “I could never be mad at you, you know that, right? You’re family. And you were just looking out for me. That’s more than I could ever ask for, from anyone. Genuinely…I’m surprised he didn’t do anything to you. I’m glad, of course, but shocked. That’s alarmingly out of character for him…”
laughter was the last thing finley had expected as a reaction from charlie, but as he laughed she let out a sigh of relief. she knew she would have gone crazy if he was upset with her, and knowing that he wasn’t allowed her to relax a bit more. “i agree,” she responded as she looked at him with a smile, “he definitely deserved it that day.”
when he assured her that he would never be mad with her she gave him a small nod, letting him know she understood. of course the same was true for her, and she was sure charlie knew that. when he commented that it seemed strange that augustus hadn’t fought back she shrugged, “i thought he was going to kill me for sure, but then he just backed away and let me run. it was weird, but luckily i haven’t seen him around since then.”
“anyways, you’re supposed to be going to sleep. you’ve had a hell of a day,” she reminded him with a soft smile. once he was laying down she curled up next to him, one hand holding onto his while her cheek rested on the pillow they were sharing and she looked at him. “we’ll figure this all out, okay? love sucks, but i think you’ll be alright.”
