Made it back to tumblr as a Meta refugee after a 10 year hiatus.
I love sewing, especially historically inspired pieces and costumes. My favorite eras are Edwardian and Regency, but I’m interested in all eras. Not limited to history either, but I ADORE history-inspired fantasy costumes, and I dress in a historybounding style most days!
Above is my early 1900s walking outfit, based mostly on historical patterns and fully sewn by me.
Known as an "emancipated duel," it was a private event for women only. Baroness Lubinska, physician for the famous 1892 duel between Princess Pauline Metternich and Countess Anastasia Kielmannsegg suggested they duel topless to prevent infection. It was feared that if the swords pierced their clothing, fabric fibers could enter the wound and cause infection. By removing their tops, they ensured cleaner cuts and easier medical care.

Ce corsage, en crépon rayé rose et blanc, est garni devant d'un jabot en même étoffe. Les manches bouffantes sont demi-longues; on les fronce au milieu du bord supérieur en formant une petite tête; on les relève plusieurs fois. La blouse est complétée par une col droit plissé, orné de choux et par une ceinture unie.
This bodice, in pink and white striped crepe, is trimmed in front with a jabot in the same fabric. The puffed sleeves are half-long; they are gathered in the middle of the upper edge to form a small head; they are raised several times. The blouse is completed by a pleated straight collar, decorated with cabbages and by a plain belt.

La jupe large, en lainage écru, est unie. Le corsage-veste, long, s'écartant devant, laisse voir un plastron garni de galons disposés en chevrons. Le corsage, garni de galons tout autour, a des manches bouffantes, ornées de galons.
The wide skirt, in ecru wool, is plain. The long bodice-jacket, opening in front, reveals a plastron trimmed with braid arranged in a herringbone pattern. The bodice, trimmed with braid all around, has puffed sleeves, decorated with braid.

Robe en lainage gris de fer.
Robe en lainage gris de fer, garnie de galons de laine foncée et de moire crème. Le corsage-veste, à basques pointues devant et derrière, s'ouvre sur une chemisette de dentelle crème; on le garnit avec des revers en moire crème, et un grand col fendu semblable, encadrés de galons de laine. La jupe est ornée de panneaux en moire, encadrés de galons; la ceinture en pointe, assez large, est faite en galons. Le col droit plissé est fait en moire.
Dress in iron-grey wool, trimmed with dark wool and cream moire braid. The jacket-bodice, with pointed basques in front and back, opens onto a cream lace chemisette; it is trimmed with cream moire lapels, and a similar large slit collar, framed with wool braid. The skirt is decorated with moire panels, framed with braid; the pointed belt, quite wide, is made of braid. The straight pleated collar is made of moire.

Corsage en batiste écrue, garni de dentelle orientale couleur Isigny; on fronce le devant au bord supérieur et au bord inférieur; le dos est disposé en deux plis dirigés en arrière ayant 1 centimètre de largeur; on y rattache la dentelle orientale qui forme le bord par derrière. On dispose la dentelle devant de la façon indiquée. Le corsage est complété par un col droit plissé, une ceinture plate, ornée de petites têtes froncées; les manches sont terminées par de la dentelle orientale.
Bodice in ecru batiste, trimmed with oriental lace in Isigny color; the front is gathered at the upper and lower edges; the back is arranged in two pleats directed backwards, 1 centimeter wide; the oriental lace forming the edge is attached from behind. The lace is arranged in the front as shown. The bodice is completed by a straight pleated collar, a flat belt, decorated with small gathered heads; the sleeves are finished with oriental lace.
See the ribbon-wrapped base held half an inch below the tiara? That would rest on the wearer’s head, allowing her hair to be dressed around the crown without losing any of the details (and jewels). Fashionable women’s hairstyles in the early 20th century were full enough that tiaras could easily sink down into them if they didn’t have a bit of a boost.
