His words were a shock, a punch to the gut. Yet Leo had worked for the army for years, he’d gotten good at hiding his emotions. Though if anybody would be able to read the imperceptible change in his facial expressions, it would be Nix. “Who am I to judge you?” He finally answered, biting down on his lip slightly before gently tightening his own hold on Nix reassuringly. “It’s not different. Just because it was an order doesn’t stop it being wrong.” He insisted, guilt beginning to build within him. “I hated it so much...” He confided, a small shudder escaping him. “You sure talk the talk Ягодка. But can you walk the walk?” He teased, gently pulling away before he got up to grab a bottle of vodka from his liquor cabinet. “Bottom’s up.” He murmured, twisting the cap off before settling himself back down beside Nix.

Benji was surrounded, clearly outnumbered. Any person in their right mind would know that he didn’t stand a chance against three people, all of them being much large than him. That didn’t stop him from fighting back against them. He had been on his way home, he had noticed that he was being followed. This day in particular, he was in a particularly pissy mood. When they had cornered him against a wall. 

He had stood his ground for approximately two seconds before they had quickly overpowered him. He was getting beaten when suddenly he wasn’t. Quickly getting to his feet, he wiped off his face as he looked at the person who had sent the other three running. “I could have handled that.” He snarled as he glared at the person.

Leo hated bullies. The sheer sight of the three burly thugs having a go at the blonde guy was enough to have his blood boiling and without much further ado... He’d punched one, shoved another and sent the last guy running. It didn’t hurt that he towered over them in height and physique... So when he turned back to offer a hand to the guy on the floor, he let out a quiet snort of amusement at his words.

“A simple thank you would have sufficed.” He commented dryly, cracking his knuckles before he looked around again to ensure they were definitely alone again. “Are you alright?” He asked, shooting him a polite smile despite the glare being directed at him. “You have nothing to be ashamed about. It was three on one. But we had probably best get out of here in case they didn’t learn their lesson...”

“ if you think about it, you’re getting your cardio in. call it a free workout, free of charge, ” helen joked. “ i think a reliable elevator would be APPRECIATED but also make us all lazier, to which i really don’t mind. and yeah, it probably would screw up the aesthetic of the complex. ”

“I appreciate the optimism...” He teased, shaking his head with a smile. “I think I’ll be able to guiltlessly skip the gym for today, 100%” He laughed. “And yeah, I think the fitness is one of those things we wouldn’t do if we didn’t have to... So I guess we should be somewhat grateful for that aesthetic...”

the second he was wrapped up in familiar arms, his entire body was relaxing. it was like a reflex, as he drank in the familiar warmth that always seemed to radiate from the other man, breathed in the calming scent. it felt like he’d never left for a moment, he could almost kid himself to thinking leo had just come home after being deployed for far too long, focusing on nothing but each other. the rest of the world, circumstances, didn’t matter when they were like this. he felt safe, he felt LOVED and god that was a feeling he’d missed. “what if you say that and then, you find out WHAT i’ve done, and it all changes? because, i’m…not the same anymore. i’ve done bad things.” out of all of the BAD things he’d done, none seemed quite as bad as every promise to leo he broke when he fled. slender fingers reached out, playing with the button at the cuff of the other man’s sleeve, an action that once upon a time had been so normal and calming. “you could see me drunk NOW? vodka would, definitely make this easier, right?” he reached up lightly, hand cupping his cheep before he slowly wiped away a tear with the pad of his thumb. “вам нечего жалеть. Вы не сделали ничего плохого”

The feeling of having nix back in his arms, even after all this time... felt so right. It was so reassuring to have him close to him and for a moment, he could pretend that no time had passed... That Nix was still his. Breathing in Nix’s scent was absurdly comforting and he slowly tightened his hold on him as a soft, satisfied sigh escaped him. “Nix... I don’t think anything could change what I think about you, feel about you. I’ve done shit too- I was in the army... I’ve killed people.” He reminded him, a sad frown falling across his face though Nix’s nervous fiddling with his sleeve quickly alleviated any sign of it. “Vodka huh?” He asked, a grin beginning to quirk up his lips. “Don’t tell me you can outdrink me now?” He teased, sighing softly again as Nix reached up to brush away a stray tear. “Я потерял тебя, я сожалею, что больше всего.”

nix felt small, smaller than he had in a long time. he tucked his knees up to his chest, resting his head for a moment. “i was going to come home, i wasn’t going to leave forever but, i got involved with some…people and, i was tainted, i figured you wouldn’t want the drug addicted alcoholic slut, that’s not what you signed up for. you signed up for pure fucking baker nix who had only ever been with you and didn’t even drink!” and there is was, the insecurity, deep rooted under the surface. as confident as he acted now it was still there. “я нуждался в Тебе, и вы не были там”

Watching Nix begin to curl up on himself was enough to have Leo’s whole heart twisting at the knowledge he was responsible for upsetting him. He had always been the protector in the relationship... hurting him seemed completely unfathomable. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled, moving to sit down beside Nix as he bit down on his lip, nervous and anxious all of a sudden. “You could never be tainted to me Nix. I wouldn’t have cared- I don’t care what you’ve done. I just want you to be safe, happy...” He murmured, taking a deep breath before he reached over to pick Nix’s hands up in his own. “I loved you because you were you... funny, sexy, adorable in just about every situation... If anything, I’m jealous I never got to see you drunk.” He insisted, trying to lighten the mood softly, before his heart dropped at his final words. Expression contorting into one of misery at the truth behind his words. “Я знаю, детка, если бы я мог изменить, как все произошло. Я сожалею об этом так много.” He whispered, pulling Nix towards him in a hug as the first tears began to overflow and trickle down his cheeks.

“it wasn’t about YOU! i did it for me. i’m allowed that aren’t i? everything HURT, do you think i even had the strength to write to you. if i did i t would have literally been ‘lol my dad died i want to kill myself please come home’. oh yeah, the russian armed forces? you’re going to tell THEM your boyfriend needs you?” every word he spoke seemed to be taking him back, it was like he could feel everything he felt then all over again. “every time i needed you you weren’t there, i just had to accept that, stay at home baking and home you’d eventually come home!” 

“Of course you are! Stop trying to make me the villain Phoenix! But I was hurting just as badly when you left me!” He snapped, his eyes beginning to well with unshed tears. “Because that’s what happened. ‘Ваши неприятности мои неприятности’ remember? But I guess that didn’t mean as much to you as it did to me.” He whispered, taking in a deep breath as he tried to regain his calm. “I could have told them that a family friend died and I had to go home for the funeral. I could have tried.” He insisted, shaking his head angrily. “You don’t think there were days I missed you? There were months of that. I hated it Nix. I hated it so much. If I could have picked you first I would have. Every single time.”

“ it’s no problem, ” helen replied with a shrug. “ normally, i DON’T really mind walking up and down these stairs, but we seriously need to get a more reliable elevator. it has its good days, but yeah. i’m just glad i live on the third floor so it’s not bad. ”

“See, three floors I think I could handle... But doing eight each way is just a bloody nightmare.” He explained with a laugh. “A reliable elevator would be great, but I guess that would screw up the whole, decrepit aesthetic this place has going for it.” He teased.

his gaze narrowed into a glare, his line of sight drifting down to his own shoes just for something other than leo to look at. “i did think to tell you, i just decided against it. can you at least close the fucking door if we’re going to argue? i’d rather THIS not be the talk of the building if that’s fucking okay with you.” he felt no nerves about making himself at home, setting down on the couch without asking. all the swearing, the raised voices, the confidence. it was all things LEO’S version of phoenix never did. he sighed, a hand running through his hair. “my dad died, my dad died and you weren’t coming back for MONTHS. you were gone,he was gone and what? i was meant to stay there? alone?” 

The fact that Nix wasn’t able to meet his eyes did more to irritate him than anything else so far. “So what? You just decided breaking up with me wouldn’t be bad enough? But leaving me without even a bloody word of warning was the best plan of action?” He demanded, hurt obvious across his face and stance. At Nix’s comment, he shoved the door close. Raising an eyebrow as he waited to hear what excuse Nix would spout next. He’d changed... that much was obvious, he seemed older, more mature, self-assured... different. Though the fact they were arguing in English was the weirdest part to him by far. “I know he died. But I had to find that out in the bloody newspaper obituary because you didn’t tell me! I was supposed to be your boyfriend! If I had known I would have tried to get leave! I would have wanted to be there for you- to help you through that! I thought you knew that...”

for all she knew, the male might not have been SPEAKING to her. but she glanced up from her phone, regardless and spotted the boxes. “ oh –– yeah, sure i guess, ” helen replied, walking over to the door. she jangled the door knob before swinging the door open and holding it out for him.

“Thanks so much.” He began with a soft laugh, slipping through his door before depositing the boxes and turning around to face her. “I’ve been doing that bloody trek up and down the stairs all day. Figures today is the day the elevator decides to not work.”

he felt nauseous, he felt like the room was spinning and that oxygen was no longer filtering into his system. all he could do was stare at him, eyes welling up with tears as he held his gaze. “feel like a child when you call me phoenix, like im about to be shouted at” he mumbled pathetically, he looked up for a moment unsure what language he was meant to be speaking in. “what the hell are you doing here? if you think this is the appropriate way to regain contact, you’re WRONG.”

“You’re the one who was pretending not to remember what their name was.” He reminded him, the ghost of a smile slipping across his features before it was gone as reality returned. “You can quit with the accusatory tone. I’m just as surprised as you are.” He defended, features turning stubborn as Nix had a go at him. “And just would an appropriate way have been? A facebook message? But oh wait. You blocked me on facebook about the same time you moved out of Russia without even thinking to tell me. Why don’t we talk about that?”

Hey there- I’m Charlotte. Newly accepted and super excited to get plotting. This is Leo Malikov, my beautiful half-American, half-Russian angel. 

Born August 6th, 1991 in New York

Moved to Russia with his family when he was five years old, lived there until just recently. 

Ex-army, he joined when he finished high school and left upon his fathers death. He’s now back in America to be closer to his mother who moved back after losing her husband.

Leo realised he was gay in his mid-teens, though was always popular in school, captain of a variety of sports teams. He’s been in the closet his whole life, though is open about his sexuality with close friends he knows he can trust. 

His first love was Phoenix 

He now works in private security, runs some private defence classes as well as personal training due to his natural athletic tendencies.

and alright, that was the last person he expected to see in a run down apartment building in america. his heart beat is rapid, strong, as if it’s trying to break out of his check and go home.  he’s a foot away, nix could so easily step into his arms and feel safe and warm, the way he always had, all he had to do was lean up and inch and he’d have his lips against his and FUCK .  he’d never expected to see him again, not like this, not here and now. “n-nix? wh-what’s a nix?” surely his voice had never shook quite this much, 

He felt like he was going into shock. He had resigned himself to never seeing Nix again, to never finding out what had happened. It hadn’t been like Nix had left a forwarding address. Or a note. What was he doing in America? What was he doing speaking English?! Had it really been that long? Slowly coming back to himself, Leo took in a shaky breath, unable to take his eyes off the face that even after all this time, was still so, so familiar. “Phoenix. Stop.” He muttered, brows furrowing together as he frowned softly. “Я никогда не мог забыть лицо.” He murmured, taking a step forward without even thinking about it.

the strangers face was practically covered by the boxes and nix found himself slightly amused “sure thing” he opened the apartment door for the man, stepping inside to hold the door open. “right, let me take o-” he reached for the top box, freezing as he caught sight of who exactly he’d been over looking. “i- wow i just remembered i had this thing, a very important thing that i should-that i need to be doing right now.”

Distracted by the weight in his arms and trying not to trip over his welcome mat... he barely spared his helpful neighbour a second thought as he stepped into his apartment. Aside from the slightly accented English, it was an unfamiliar voice and he was just aiming to say thanks before showering, throwing some dinner together and going to bed. That all changed the second he caught sight of a face he knew he’d never forget, yet one he had never expected to see again. “No...” He began, expression morphing into one of sheer shock. “Nix?” He whispered, the boxes falling to the floor with a heavy thud as he practically froze in surprise.

“Uh- Sorry... Could you get that door for me? I’ve kind of got my hands full.” He explained, hoisting the stack of boxes he was carrying that little bit higher to make his point. “It should be unlocked...”
