hhhhhh i miss this blog and this fandom :(
healthy relationships with fathers? sounds fake
28 years later part 2 || bass & leo
presidentbassmonroe:
It was still weird to him to hear Miles referred to as âMr. Mathesonâ.  He knew it was a respect thing, but the honorific still brought to mind Milesâ and Benâs father, not the younger son.  âUh, yeah, we were.  Weâve been friends since we were about five. Inseparableâ  And Bass had been very transparently in love with him since he recognized the emotion for what it was. It wasnât a surprise to him that Emma had noticed.
âMy girlfriend and I are like that,â he says, idly. âWe havenât known each other since we were kids, but it feels like weâveknown each other forever.â
Now that the top of the computer tower is cleared of all the junk, he pulls a flashlight out of his pocket and shines it against the tower. Thereâs a fuckton of dust in the exhaust port. âIt might not be my place to say? But she mentioned that she wasnât exactly faithful to Mr. Matheson?â

presidentbassmonroe:
âThe apocalypse happened,â Monroe snapped. Â âThe man I used to be wouldnât have survived. Â I had to toughen up. Â I had to become a monster, or I would have gotten eaten alive. Â So I clawed, and killed my way to the top of the pack. Â And if a couple screws came loose along the way? Â Thatâs the price I paid to survive.â
âJust because the apocalypse happened doesnât mean that you had to start killing people,â Leo snaps back, albeit a little petulantly. Yes, heâd killed people, but that was only to survive Trenton. And All the other battles that came afterwards. He has his regrets, but heâd never let them gnaw at them like Bassâs apparently had. âThere are plenty of people who lived through the first year of the blackout without going completely fucking insane, like you did.â
But it's harder than you think                     Telling dreams from one another
presidentbassmonroe:
âIâve told you a hundred times, I can get medicine for your wife once I handle the Georgia threat,â Monroe said flatly.  Heâd been promising that for a while now.  But things kept getting worse and worse and Monroe wasnât sure if he could handle it on his own.  This was Milesâ specialty.  Not his.  âYou donât understand, Leo.  Calling it a relationship⊠a breakup⊠Itâs not enough.  It was more than that.â
âThe entire fact that youâve told me a hundred times just makes me trust you less,â Leo informs, monotone, as he goes back to working on the report. Heâs asked Bass multiple times to let him help, but heâs always been told to go back to monitoring the stupid shit, and at this point heâs too annoyed to even care. âJuli and I have known each other since we were kids too, dad. We both grew up in Jasper, just like you and Miles. I know exactly what you mean, but at this point I donât care, because youâre acting like a teenage girl when her boyfriend has broken up with her for the third time.â
presidentbassmonroe:
âHe needs my help.  I canât just leave him.â  The words slipped from his tongue, well practiced even after all these years.  What was left of the logical part of his mind knew that Miles was using him to mop up the rest of the Patriots so he and Rachel could act like the Butcher of Baltimore never existed.  Yet when Miles looked at him, trusted him⊠Bass couldnât say no.  He never could.
Without thinking, Leo reaches up and smacks Bass across the face. âWhat the fuck has Miles done for you in the last year and a half that hasnât lead to your own heartbreak and his betrayal? Heâs using you because he knows youâre in love with him and would do anything.â
He hates that he has to be the one to knock sense into Bass. Heâs his son, for god's sake. âYou and I both fucking know that heâs in love with Rachel, and that when this is all over, heâs never going to come back to you.â
presidentbassmonroe:
@leomcnroe sent: âthe blood on my hands scares me to death"Â
Bass sighed and looked away from his son.  "If youâre looking for me to say it gets easier, Iâm sorry to disappoint.â  Bass had entire cities of blood on his hands.  He didnât think it would ever get better. Especially with the Mathesons pushing him away every time he tried to be the better person. âIt doesnât. If it gets easier, youâre getting worse. And⊠and thereâs no coming back from that.â He tilted his head back back, draining the last gulp of whiskey from the bottle in his hand. âNoneâŠ.â
Leo didnât even have as much blood on his hands as he knew his father did. He hadnât killed nearly as many people, even though heâs been in the Militia since Trenton. Heâd always been the one to stick to the back, providing his fellow soldiers with bullets, trying to help stitch them back together. There were a few memorable moments, yes, but heâd never lost count. He shuffles back and forth, looking at his feet as he speaks. âWhen did you lose count?â
âHave you ever thought about how space is constantly expanding and we havenât even started exploring more than one percent of it?â
presidentbassmonroe:
@leomcnroe sent: âyou ruin everything you touch and destroy anyone you loveâ
Did Leo honestly think Monroe didnât know that? Â It was eating away at him, with every lonely minute that passed, every brick that crumbled off the precarious thing he and Miles had built that he was supposed to be holding together all on his own. Â He didnât know where to turn or who to trust, his world kept tilting out of control like a wrecking ball leaving nothing but carnage in his wake.
But that didnât mean he wanted to hear it. Icy blue eyes snapped up from his paperwork. Â "Lieutenant. Even you donât have the right to talk to me that way.â Â He was still reeling from the realization that Jeremy had been executed for nothing. Â He didnât need Leo rubbing that in his face.
âMaybe I donât,â Leo starts, anger coursing through him. As the days pass by and he starts to know his father better, heâs started getting more and more brave, telling him the things he needed to hear. The success of the Republic cannot continue if itâs leader refuses to pull himself out of whatever kind of depression he was in. âBut Iâm the only fucking person in the entirety of Philadelphia that will say it to you. Because you seem to keep killing everyone else.â
presidentbassmonroe:
@leomcnroe sent: âill never be like youâ
Monroe huffed a quiet laugh, blue eyes boring into his sonâs identical ones.  "Are you sure about that?  You might be younger, less jaded, but let me tell youâ that kind of desire for power, for making things better⊠thatâs how all this started. Youâll do anything to prove to yourself that youâre strong, that you can do this.  Is all of this sounding familiar?â
Leo wished that it didnât sound so fucking familiar. That it didnât describe his ambitions to a T. But he knows that heâs better than his father, that he wonât let his grief drag him to a place he canât climb out of. âIâm better than you. Iâm different.â
Donât mention the fact that heâs got tears in his eyes and heâs refusing to meet Bassâs gaze.
presidentbassmonroe:
@leomcnroe sent: âIf youâre trying to find pity, you need to look elsewhere.â
âWhy?  Because your wife is safe at home in Jasper?  Because you have someone who gives a damn that youâre still alive?â  Whiskey made Monroeâs words thick.  "It would have been better⊠it⊠it would have been easier if heâd just done it.  If heâd just pulled the trigger.â
âYeah, and itâs not like my wife doesnât have a disease thatâs slowly killing her,â Leo says, matter-of-fact. He doesnât move from his position at his desk, pen still poised over the paper he was writing on. âI donât have time to deal with a suicidal drunk who canât pull his head out of his ass and get over a relationship that ended almost five years ago.â
