Luc couldn’t say anything, the constriction in his throat was too much to be able to even if he could find any words to say. Pain painted itself on his face, he was certain of that. He knew…he knew that what he was doing and what he would do would be beyond repenting. He knew that, he accepted it. He didn’t like it at all, but he had accepted it. To ensure a better future, to avoid the gray desolate world that he saw…it was worth the sacrifice it would take. While it didn’t make it right, or even okay, or justifiable, he felt that it was the only way. To take the lives of a million people and destroy a god… It was the only way. End the cycle of destruction and release humans from their fate. Destiny was not unchangeable.
He closed his eyes momentarily, his head lowering as he balled his fists. Even with all of this, he could feel his resolve slipping now. Why…why did she…? …she doesn’t love you anymore, certainly not now. There was a reason why he avoided getting close to anyone, nothing good came of it. It was…better this way. It should be easier. But it wasn’t.
Exhaling he returned his gaze to her, his face looked rather strained, “…I guess that Luc is gone now. You can hate me for that, if you want, I won’t blame you for a second. It might be better if you do anyway.” Then there won’t be any reason to mourn.
She stared at the man before him, the man who was just the shadow of somebody of the past. Somebody who she loved and had so many memories with - who shared the same face as this murderer. This killer - who killed her Luc.
The fires around the village seem to grow hotter with Nina’s rage, rising and rising ten feet into the air and blazing into a bright blue that lit up the dark sky. She raised her arm and the flames bent to her will, creating a tower of inferno that towered over the two - a storm of rage and anger that wanted to just burn this man to ashes.
She didn’t want to stop loving him - he left her. And Nina thinks she never did no matter how many times she convinced she’s over it. He stopped contacting her and cut off all they had - Nina would hope every night she had a letter come sliding through her front door because she believed that he was better than that. That they were better than that.
Was it the fact that they were so distant? That times have changed and he no longer saw the little girl he fell in love with so many years ago? Was it her stubborn heart, that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t let go of love?
And now, she’ll never know.
